Topic: Flying V Pickups

Today is new guitar day!  I got an older Tokai Flying V coming in (all mahogany with rosewood neck).  Of course I haven't even heard it nor played it, but I am already thinking about switching out the pickups :-).  Anyone has any suggestions?  What PUP's are in JB's RAH video?  I play classic rock styled music much like what The Rival Sons and Ruffus Huff are doing (if you don't know either band, check youtube).

Re: Flying V Pickups

Hey Macg1, I just finished installing a Lindy Frailin Pure Paf in the bridge of my early 90's 1967 Gibson Flying V Reissue.  It is wound slightly hotter at 9K that the standard Pure PAF.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

cool. thanks. actually these PUP's are not bad.  the guitar needed a quick truss adjustment, the bridge lowered and the bridge PUP raised to better balance the two since I kind of like that i can keep the selector in the middle and just use the volume knobs to blend.  I have an old SD Distortion from 1980 that I may put on the bridge to see what may happen.  it will need new strings and likely a few more adjustments before it is in top playing shape, but it has a giant beefy neck!

Re: Flying V Pickups

I did not want to replace my bridge pick up, but it was weak compared to my neck pick up and it squealed terribly when using overdrive.  I don't know what kind of pick up it is.  The neck has a Gibson insignia on it but the bridge doesn't.  The bridge is stamped  PAT NO 2737842 and it has R6C written in black magic marker.  The first test of the new Fralin through a solid state practice amp sounds good with overdrive and reverb.  Not too dirty, and tight and articulate. No squealing either and a similar output to my neck pup.  But this is at a very low volume. Tomorrow night I hope to go to the practice room and test it through a cranked blackface Fender Bassman.

Re: Flying V Pickups

I don't know which pickups are in Joe's V but Lenny Kravitz has BKP Mules in his.

Joe seems to stick with the original pickups in most cases - I think he says that in an interview somewhere.
