Topic: Pink Whistles

If you're so inclined, I'd like to see people email the WOA and let them know what you think.

Re: Pink Whistles

Well, I just finished commenting on someone lamenting disappointment in the GENERAL TOPICS category...Here we go again.  smile
They do not have their heads up their asses.  Just because you believe it is a good cause doesn't make it right.  Apply this to something in a different light and you could see the rationale.  These are not NFL referees.  They are state level.  These associations are where collegiate and professional referees come from.  The rigors of just browsing the game rules, let alone association rules and rulebooks tests would make most heads spin.  You can call them political, provincial, petty, but  RULES ARE RULES.  I'm not a rule abiding person myself, let's just say I've often known the "disappointing" consequences within my own life of making my own "calls"! And I've seen the consequences play out on my own father, who was a New York State Official for football, basketball, and girl's softball.  He was legendary (top scores and received awards) in his knowledge and APPLICATION of the rules, despite parental, coaches, athletic directors, home or visiting teams fans, or even sometimes other game or association Officials "interpretations".  I saw first hand the association disregarding their own rules once ( roll ), but I do know WHY, even though it was totally unfair and not just "seemingly" unfair as in this case.   The uniform and equipment regulations are strict and not negotiable.  For a reason.  Actually for many.  Same with military uniform and equipment regulations.  Even Hollywood takes note of US regulations in that respect, as SOMETHING MUST be out of place or not in accordance with regulations or standards or severe penalties will be invoked!!! And frankly, US service persons can get away with more on their uniforms and regulations than referees and umpires!  Ask one, you'll find out.  IF it was unilaterally decided amongst them to all go down together, down they went. They knew it, they chanced it .  They lost.  Over.  No rational reason even NEEDS to be given.  Todd Storhahl, WOA Commissioner has been quoted as saying, ”They chose not to ask for permission, not to go the right route. It sends the wrong message to kids that are playing the game.”.  Everyone should know he is correct.  It's not about liking the result.  It is what it is. And truthfully, it is true.  Parents of teens know they do not expect or tolerate usurping their authority and a rule laid is a rule that better be played correctly by kids.  What if these referees decided to do something ballsy and wore blue jock straps on the outsides of their uniforms and refuse their payments for games for one week to support prostate cancer? Absurd? Yes, by your standards (and in this case they are the prevailing "authority").  SO, that ridiculous analogy doesn't hold up due to appearances and just being very "wrong",  Agreed. However, it is NOT the degree (and therefore interpretation) of wrong in this whistle case.  It is just the fact.  A hardly (yet) plausible, paltry rationale of pink whistles being "distracting" to players and therefore possibly dangerous with ramifications of injuries and possible litigation arising from same, whether by sane or not so sane persons...like I said, doesn't need be offered.  Sorry. I cannot support .  I do, in principle of course. But, a better approach could have been made and was not.   In the future, referees CERTAINLY can donate checks, that is their own personal decision.  They could and should make a plea to PA announcers for games during the campaign week to make a public announcement that all game referees calling today's ( or tonight's ) game have pledged to donate their pay (or "to make a donation this week" without mentioning their pay-as THAT might be a no no also  roll ) to The Susan G. Komen For The Cure and encourage all in attendance and watching to also make a donation.... No one could penalize them for that approach !  wink

Yes, my dad lost a playoff game eligibility one year I believe, and he did NOTHING wrong.  Purely political.  No pay ever forfeited or probation.  Also, I do seem to recall a silly whistle infraction he had, not penalized, just couldn't use it a certain way...something like that.  They can be petty! But like a parent-child standoff...the kid loses almost every time-yup the (now we are talking proverbial) "because I said so"!

On a roll today Rocket?  lol

There never was an issue with the idea that a rule was broken, nor that some sort of disciplinary action was warranted. It just seemed to me that taken at face value, there was a disparity between the nature of the offense, and the severity of the punishment.

Yeah, on a roll.  Far too short time off weekend! Actually, the punishments are ALWAYS severe.
No surprise there. I DO want to come back, as I am someone with real concern for the cause,  and say I will take this roll I am on to the WOA in the form of kill 'em with kindness dance them into the corner letter.  Maybe they'll try something that shows some sort of social compassion for the cause of cancer, THAT would be something if they made a sponsored small gesture if not event annually??? I'll try.  We shall see what happens.  Likely nothing given the stiffness of these folks. But worth the effort to try.
