Topic: Buying a Jubilee

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a Jubilee which is for sale in my town. I'm testing it within a couple of days. It's a 100W from 1987 and based on the pictures - in super good condition. Are there anything special things I should check when I try it? I will open it and have a look inside, but I'm not a amp tech and need some advise:-)

The price is USD 2.800 and having in mind that this is in Norway, which indeed is a high cost country (luckily with higher wages!), I wonder if the price is ok. For comparable a new Marshall JVM410 costs USD 2.200 (retail price).

Any advise will be very much appreciated!

Damn....it makes feel stupid for not buying a Silver Jub. combo for $1200... neutral

Of course then I didn't know how great they are said to be.

That price seems pretty high, but I don't know a thing about your area of the world. For close to that money, you should get it checked out thoroughly by a good amp tech.

That does seem high.  I recently got a Jubilee as well and did a little reading on the Marshall Forum.  I also read through this forum and found a couple of folks that have them and sent them a note asking for guidance.  I think you'll have good results if you go that direction too.  If you're going to have time with it before committing to buying it, I'd take photos and post them on the Marshall Forum and ask them if they see anything "funny".  Great resource of guys there. 

I also just got a 2550 (1988) which is a jubilee just not silver tolex.  Sounds great to me and the premium $ for the Jubilee goes away.  I also considered the Carol Ann Revo, as it was supposed to be built to emulate a Jubilee.   Just couldn't find one for the right price.  I tend to buy gear that's "on sale" not "for sale".   Good luck!!!

Any news on if/when Category 5 will start production of the JB 100 w which Joe ment is the first Jubilee built since the late 1980's?

Whats up with all these black 1988's!!?  I would love to find one of those..  I have never even laid eyes on one.  Seems you guys got the hook up for the black 88's.. ( good name for a cover band) As far as 2800 USD for Norway is a fair deal.  If it sounds great and has the Drake transformers I would do it.  They are great amps and there are only so many out there.  I personally know the whereabouts of 9 of them..   cool

If you want an original Jubilee 100w in good condition then its worth what you are willing to pay
but you must check the serial number ! the first ones up to about 2500 had something weird going on
with the circuit and sounded thin ,although they can be modded to the later circuit . but honestly for that money
it has to tick all the boxes , and as Joe said, Drake transformers are a must

How do I find out if the amp has the Drake transformers? Does the name appear on it or do I have to find a picture of one? Maybe a silly question, but I dare ask anyway cool

I have two of the black 88 Jubilees and I love them!. One is well used the other is a pristine back up. I can bring one with me to Ithaca for you to try out if you'd like.

I think they made them in 89 as well. Mine is a 2553 built on 6/6/88 in black, I have the pics with the drakes that have the 5.88 stamp on them and the inspection date of 6/6/88

$2500 seems high but might be right for your part of the world.

LOL..  You are right NPB_19179...   I would gladly take a black 88 for the rig!!  If anybody knows where a 100 watt is lurking and is need a 200 show world tour let me know..

I've been told that only few of the black 88's came with a silver faceplate making them uber rare! I have yet to see one though.

You may need to open it up. Or have a qualified tech do it. You may get lucky and still be able to see a Drake label on the tranny if you take the back panel off.
