Topic: Seve Ballesteros

Back in the day I used to watch and play a lot of golf.

You marvelled at the measured technique of the expert players, but as it is such an individual sport, you often identified with the players through their character or individual style.

Which is why Seve garnered millions of fans globally. While other players kept their emotion in check and battened down the hatches to grind out the result, Ballesteros was always the counterpoint.

Abandoning reason and caution when circumstances dictated it, he would take on the forces of nature of the game and we would follow him as he swashbuckled his way around a course.

When it was all good the titles and awards fell his way. It would go spectacularly wrong sometimes too but we loved him for that.

He wasn't the first to be afflicted by problems with his game. Putting is such an enormous part of the sport. When that goes wrong the greatest are humbled. But through it all, the bad times, he fought to maintain his place in the sport.

When he could no lead the field as an individual he did as a captain, and superbly so with the Ryder Cup team.

Golf isn't a game for everybody. In my time I've enjoyed it enormously but I understand those who don't get it. But I suggest they would only need to see someone like Seve Ballesteros in the flesh in his prime to get that greater understanding.

A sad loss at a relatively young age. But time will not wither the record of his achievements and the memory of his sporting prowess.

RIP

Re: Seve Ballesteros

Another of the worlds greatest sportsman has been taken from us! I too have watched and played a bit in my time, and every once and a while, someone like Seve comes along, an inspiration for all who love the game.

I had the privilege to watch the great man in action once, i shall never forget it, his approach to the tee, his broad grin, his set up, his swing...

A very sad day for the world of sport.

RIP

Re: Seve Ballesteros

RIP Seve.
A great player, but my largest memory of Seve was him totally shanking a fairway wood (I believe it was at Augusta) that went about 75 yards...I remember thinking "I play just like a pro".
He was probably in a divot or something.

Re: Seve Ballesteros

Arguably never a fiercer competitor on the golf course. Wore his emotions on his sleeve. Had to reach for a tissue after seeing Faldo on Golf Channel's golf central. Sad loss of a great golf icon.

Tell me about the car i saw parked outside your door ? Tell me what you left me waiting two or three hours for ? Tell me why when the phone rings, baby, your up and across the floor ? Please dont keep me wondering no more.....

He had a brain tumor which he had battled for the past couple of years. On May 6th his family released a statement that his neurological condition had "suffered a severe deterioration". He passed away within hours of the announcement.

One of the all time greats, no shot was impossible when Seve had a club in his hands.

Re: Seve Ballesteros

the TPC starts tomorrow, one of the perks for the previous winner is flying his home country's flag at the circle of champions near the clubhouse. Tim Clark is the defending champion and has deferred on the SA flag to allow the Spanish flag to be flown instead, in honor of Seve. A very classy decision by Tim and the PGA. RIP Seve, you will be missed.
