Topic: Say Hey @ 80

Happy Birthday Willie Mays, the Say Hey kid is 80 years young today. In my opinion Willie is the best to ever play the game. Willie's defensive skills were second to none as well as his base running ability. Too bad he spent 2 years serving his country and playing in chilly windswept Candlestick Park or he probably would have totaled enough HR's to match Hammerin' Hank and his godson Barry, not that 660 is anything to be ashamed of. The Giants have a tribute planned prior to the start of tonight's game and KNBR, the Giants flagship station, is referring to themselves as Say Hey 680 all day with radio highlights of Willie's career throughout the day.

the pride of Birmingham,Alabama, Willie was not really one of my favorites growing up but I definitely appreciated his talent. I was a Clemente guy. Willie was talented in other sports as well, averaging 17 points a game for his high school basketball team, he also punted and played some QB on the football team. That is a great way to celebrate it, bravo to the Giants and KNBR. Happy birthday Willie!

Have you read his Bio, Willie Mays, The Life, The Legend Tres? Very insightful, especially how he studied and anticipated his opponents to defend against them. His detailed account of the infamous Marichal/ Roseboro incident reveals his absolute love of the game.

I'm a Chicago boy, but with you on Roberto. My favorite player of all time.
Obviously Willie Mays was in a very small category of players that could be argued as

...the greatest ever. (damn bot)

Re: Say Hey @ 80

Having seen Willie Mays many times in action, I can honestly say no player ever excited me as much.  A ball hit to him, rush comes on....announced as batter, huge rush comes on....crack from his old-fashioned bat, HUGEST rush ever came on, no matter the result.  Willie was the most exciting ground out in baseball to me (although sometimes Pete Rose rose to the occasion!).  On base, had to rattle defensive players.....
