Topic: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

It would be great to see Joe play his '59 burst on his tour to Australia in May...  cool

Although after what he experienced on his last trip here with #52 getting damaged in transit (NOT by our local airlines may I add  tongue ) I can understand him not wanting to risk it...unless of course he gets it it's own seat in first class...  big_smile

Would be so cool to hear it live...even if the notes come out upside down over here...  lol

I too would love to hear Joe's '59 on Australia shores.

Not too many '59 bursts have been played on these lands so it would be a unique experience for many of us who are looking forward to Joe in concert in Oz

Well if he does he will be buying it a seat next to him! Hard lessons learned from the likes of Delta and Cyprus airlines!

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

Anyone know any other '59 bursts that have "visited" Oz?

Did Jimmy Page bring one in the Zep tour of '73?

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

A bit off the topic but Joe had #52 at the Baked Potato gig and it looked good as new after the repairs. Sounded great too.

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

It looks like he has it with him in Europe judging by videos that have been posted, so it's a good bet that it will make it all the way to Australia at this point. I can't imagine Joe sending it home or leaving it behind.

Actually Led Zep in Oz was Feb '72.
I did see them at Subiaco Oval and Im not 100% sure what he used, I was only 13 then and miles away from the stage.
I might go and see if we have any archive footage of the concert at my work (ABC), I know there is some archive footage of them Sydney.

Ha! I was there too, at Subi. I was only 15! Amazing event. I can't remember his guitars either, my head was being pummelled with sound. I remember there was a little riot outside the oval during the concert. That got more press than the music I recall.

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

There is a killer video of Joe and his Burst doing a Gary Moore song in Oslo, Norway. I think the only way you're going to get Joe to part with that piece of wood is when you pry it from his cold fingers.

All I remember was the massive volume and few Afro Hairstyles

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

Here's a quote from a article about Joe from the newly arrived edition of Vintage Guitar referencing traveling with his 59 LP:

"I take it on the road. Am I going to take it to Singapore or India or other places where airlines often 'lose' guitars? No. But I'll take it on buses in America and Europe"

Hope that answers your questions. Maybe JB has had a change of heart? I doubt it.

I suspected that might be the case *sigh*.  I can fully understand not wanting to check a guitar that was worth six figures into the cargo hold and leave chances to the gods... However I wonder whether a guitar like that would get it's own seat purchased so it can travel next to Joe in the main cabin?  I know many artist who do that with their special guitars.

Incidentally, from my own experience of travelling back from the US with a couple of guitars 2 years ago - United would not let us take the guitars in the main cabin with us under any circumstances on the internal flights.  However on the Los Angeles-Sydney leg, Qantas were more than accommodating and let us take them on board as hang luggage.  Their overhead bins on the 747s were HUGE and easily fitted our guitar cases in them.

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

I carried a JBLP from the US to Europe on Continental no problem in the overhead bin. International baggage rule allows each passenger to bring an instrument in hand carry in addition to the normal allowance. Print out the allowance you can find online for each carrier. Have it when the front desk gives you a hassle. (it is hidden in the "other baggage category")
Hope he brings it. How's he going to get it back to the US from Europe?

I did manage to find some archive footage of Led Zep's '72 OZ tour (Sydney concert only) the Perth concert footage is long gone either it was thrown out or it's in someones garage, hopefully the latter.

The footage I found is from a show called "GTK" (remember that one) and it's in 2 parts, concert and interviews.

In the concert Jimmy Page is playing a LP Standard Burst but whether it's a '59 or not, who knows.
I will get a DVD copy sometime this week so I will put it up on YouTube.

The other thing I found when searching is Rolf Harris singing "Stairway To Heaven" with the wobble board, KILLER lol

Re: Hope Joe is bringing his '59 down under...

In 72' Jimmy on stage always had a Les Paul, #1 and #2 went with him everywhere.  As did a Danoelectro and a C.F. Martin.  I'm guessing the double neck EDS-1275 started to appear by then as well.  Jimmy Page played other Les Pauls but #1 is a 59' he got form Joe Walsh.  It featured 3 push pull pots 2 of them were coil splits, one was a phase reverse.  #2 is a 59 as well and the better looking one I might add.  It featured all that #1 offered as well as 2 push buttons under the pickguard that changed the pickups (standard) series to Parallel wiring.

He's not going to bring it (read this thread).  He gets it from US to Europe and back on airlines, sure, but that is not a big deal, as it is under control the whole time!  Once off the planes, on the bus and off the bus for show to show, in hand for songs, back to bus, a routine.  Going from country to country (or within country where flying is necessitated) with different airlines and NO BUS makes things dicey, risky, and not worth the unknowns.  So, it is not just airlines, but varying (and at times confusing) daily travel logistics that make it unfeasible!

Would love to see that footage from the Sydney concert, and the Pagey inetrview.

I remember GTK. 5 minutes before the ABC News at 7. My parents wqouldn't let me watch it as it was full of "long haired drug addicts" which in retrospect, probably was true.

And Rolf playing Stairway on wobble board! (Wasn't that on an Andrew Denton comedy show where a special guest each week played Stairway at the end of each show?)
