Hi Albert!

Okay, I'm doing this from memory, so if I make a mistake, maybe someone can correct me- you can also find lyric's to Joe's songs at this website:   www.bonamassabluesrock.com
just scroll down and they lyrics are linked to the album titles (although lyrics to The River were not linked there)

Hope this helps!  The River is one of my favorite songs by Joe- welcome to the Bonamassa "family" smile

THE RIVER

Down by the river
That's where I broke down and cried
Down by the river
That's where I lay down and died

Going down to the river
For as long as I can stand
Mama told me "Son,"
as she took a hold of my hand

"Water runs so deep,
Deep as all my pain,"
Down by the river, honey
I still see your face

Sometimes around midnight
They'd come knocking at my door
I said sometimes around midnight,
Hell hounds found what they're looking for

Well those flashing lights told me
Didn't have to say a word
Someone took my baby
Someone took away my world

All they found was a letter
I should never have let her go
The river's the only witness
The only one who knows

And the wind whispers her name
And all the lonesome years
Water turns to whiskey
I drown in my own tears

Down by the river
I see my life in flames
Down by the river honey
I call out your name

Re: The River Lyrics

Almost there, but more like this:

Down by the river
That's where I broke down and cried
Down by the river
That's where I lay down and died

Going down to the river
For as long as I can stand
Mama told me "Son,"
as she took a hold of my hand

"Water runs so deep,
Deep as all my pain,"
Down by the river, honey
Lord, can I be saved?

I said down by the river
That's where I broke down and cried
I said down by the river
That's where I broke down and cried

I said down by the river
Heartaches soaked in wine
I'm just lookin' for redemption
For that wanderin' soul of mine (sure not on that line)

Fall me to my knees (not sure on the first word)
As I drown in the pouring rain
Down by the river, honey
I still see your face

Sometimes around midnight
They'd come knocking at my door
I said sometimes around midnight,
Hell hounds found what they're looking for

Well those flashing lights told me
Didn't have to say a word
Someone took my baby

I call out your name

I call out your name

Re: The River Lyrics

"For that wanderin' soul of mine" is really "but the water's so unkind"

"You jump in front of my car when you.. you know all the time.. ninety miles an hour girl is the.. speed I drive.. "

Hey to Mexico! how did you hear about Joe?
about the lyrics, isn't there a "Heartaches soaked in wine" part?

Hi guys, I hear Joe Boanamssa for fisrt time, when I was lookin' information over the Internet about Kenny Wayne Sheppherd, I'm from a little town called Nogales in Veracruz (state of Mexico ) where the people don't know blues music, really is not popular here just for that fact, people here have a low cultural level and don't have acces to the information, for example we have just 4 tv channels at national level from 2 companies Televisa & TV Azteca, and they are almost the owners of this country together to a small group of industralists and politicians from the partys: PAN and PRI.

They controlls the media and of course contents, and Blues isn't in the programming list.

But here sometimes arrive Spanish Magazines (from Spain of course) with a lot of information about guitar players, and I meet to Kenny Wayne trought that source.

But, when I play blues around here, people likes this a lot!

The fisrt song that I listen was "A New Yesterday", and you can imagine that shock in me. Here there are many "rock bands" & just play bullshits, for that reason Joe has been an inspiration, he have a powerfull sound.

Re: The River Lyrics

Thanks Deezer and Jane for the addition to my lyrics-

I wrote them from my foggy pre-coffee memory yesterday morning, and I just knew I was forgetting something- so thanks for that.

I've seen Joe sing this song from a foot away numerous times, so I can tell you with confidence the line "For that wanderin soul of mine"  should be "But the water's so unkind"  and the line  "fall me to my knees" should be "Brought me to my knees".  Other than that, Deezer has the complete lyrics-

I wish Joe would put lyrics in his liner notes!!!!! Who knows, maybe he finds humor in watching all of us trying to get the words right wink

I know I'm opening an old can of worms with Jane on the lyric thing, but I agree with her, it would be nice to have them!!
