Topic: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

Hey all, I've been thinking about adding a Tele to my collection lately. After seeing the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya2GwkPd2Ps) RickB posted of Joe playing Beck with a Tele, my GAS was sent into overdrive! I'm having a tough time choosing. I do know I want a Fender American (cannot afford a Custom Shop), but there are so many choices especially with the Tele-bration going on! There's only a few shops around where I am and they never have a great selection, so I'll have to order online. Right now I'm thinking these:

* 60th Anniversary, which actually looks damn close to what Joe's playing
* Tele DX in aged Cherry Burst
* Empress Tele
* Modern Thinline.

Would love to have a Gigliotti, but you know... I don't hemorrhage money.

Any suggestions are welcome, especially if they're from the guitar god himself!

You can also check out Logan Guitar company... Bob Logan is out of Wisconsin, so you get a handcrafted american guitar for about the same price of a guitar that comes off of an assembly line. I paid just about $1,000 for mine, but I wanted some reclicing done on it. I believe that for a brand new one, he charges around $700-800. I am totally happy with his work... and having my name on the guitar helps out a lot too smile. See the link below.

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

Last year I bought a Baja Telecaster made in Mexico, but it was designed by the custom Shop.  Its got a V neck which is slightly beefier then most C shapes fender offers and is slightly fatter then the soft V that the Clapton Strats offer.  The fret board is a 9.5 radius.  What makes this guitar so special is the pickup are amazing.  Custom shop pickup, its a Bridge position Broadcaster pickup which is pretty hot compaired to the 51' Telecaster Reissue, and the Twisted Tele neck pickup.  The Twitsted Tele is the most sought after modern pickup Fender makes and is not for sale except in their guitars.  I don't believe they are the real Custom shop models but they are made in mexico using the same formula, but I could be wrong they might be made in america.  So, I know your looking at Fender American, but this guitar is solid.  I have had people play my Telecaster (its my dads now) and not telling them anything about it they ask me when I bought a 51 reissue.  Its the best Mexico made telecaster on their line right now.  Other features are vintage hardware and tuners ash body.  You may like this but I didn't, it has the S-1 switch and a 4 way switch instead of a 3 way.  So you can get 6 possible tones with this setup.  Its a very versital guitar and covers more ground then an american standard will.  Just my opinion, but why get a standard when you could get a custom shop at a cheaper then american standard price?  I got mine from Ebay for $600 never played 2 years old.  I modded mine with a standard volume pot from RS Guitarworks, and a no load pot, kept the 4 way switch.

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

I actually rolled my own.

It was very gratifying and I was able to choose a neck and other hardware to really fit what I wanted to do.

I'm very pleased with the overall results.

Let me tell you... the Classic Vibe Tele's are good quality, and cheaper. As a Gibson person, I can say the Vintage Vibe captures all that I'd want from a Fender...

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

I wouldn't be too hung up on the whole MIA vs. MIM thing.  My Baja Tele's fit and finish are comparable to any MIA Tele I've seen.  And the Broadcaster/Twisted Tele pickup combo is amazing...    wink

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

In nearly 30 years of playing guitar, I had never owned a Tele.

I finally relented, but decided to get mine built from scratch to my specifications.  It is currently in the final stage of the build, and is being put together by the fabulous Josh Grove of Protocaster Guitars in NY.

I can't wait to get it in a few weeks...

If you don't mind having Squier on the headstock, the Classic Vibe Tele's are great for the money. Mine felt and sounded better than any MIM I played it against, and even some MIA Tele's felt lack luster in comparison. Part due to the great craftsmanship on the CV's, and part due to the very vintage feel and specs.

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

I love a natural ash body with a black pickguard and rosewood fret board.  It's avaible as aspecial run (FSR) MIM, and as an American Standard but with a Maple board.  As far as the electronics go I'm lost, they all sound like tele's to me.

Just a question...Is it really a Tele if it's not made by Fender?

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't expect so many members to respond. I've owned several MIM and MIJ Fenders and can definitely attest to the quality of some of them. I had a 2006 60th Anniversary Fender Strat in Blizzard Pearl that was a stunner. Sounded killer too. I've heard that the Classic Vibes have gotten really good reviews, but even if it's a great player, I try to avoid anything made in China based on principle. I like to support American jobs, especially during tough times. I also want a Fender MIA because I know it will retain it's resale value if at some point I go try to sell it. Regarding the Baja, I'm pretty sure those are Mexican made with Custom Shop schematics. It seems sort of like a Tele version of the Jim Vaughan Strat. The Baja is enticing, but I'm not too big of a fan of V-shape necks.

The Baja is MIM, and is Exhibit A in my argument for caring less about MIA vs MIM (or MIJ) and more about the quality of the guitar itself.  The comparison with the JV Strat isn't misplaced (I own a JV also), particularly with regard to the neck profile and the build quality.  If you don't like beefy necks, though, steer clear...

As for China, well...if I had a rule about no Chinese-built guitars, my collection would be minus one very sweet Joe Bonamassa Signature Goldtop Epiphone...and I ain't about to go there!    big_smile

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

Ok the U shaped neck is that not considered a boat back???  and if so aren't some boat backs V shaped but much chunkier?

In regards to the Baja Tele, I've got a book on the Stratocaster 50th birthday that said most bodies in mexico are CNC routed on a CNC in the Mexico plant, however they are less then 100 miles from the Califorinia plant and if the demand is high enough or they have problems with their cnc in mexico or the usa they will route the bodies and send them to either plant.  It is nothing for a MIM body type to be routed next to a Custom shop model because they can chuck up 7 bodies at a time.

To me that means before you think your buying american made that doesn't mean it started its life in the usa.  Its the same with necks, and its the same with finishes.  Also not to be offensive but might even have workers come over legally I'm sure to help out in either plant.

I also look at it like this, the parts are american vintage (made in usa) the pickups might be custom shop, the pots are CTS (made in usa) the switch is either CRL or somebody (made in the usa) the jack is switchcraft (made in the usa) the guitar is a bolt on neck that takes all of 5 minutes to do (MIM) Frets are pressed in by a press so thats less then 20minutes (MIM or MIA depending on demand) Its wired up which takes 30mins to an hour (mim) finish (is mim or mia), setup in (MiM).
If my math is right thats 9 simple things done to a guitar 4 of which are totally american, 1/2 of the guitar is american, if you factor in the steps that either plant might have cnc routed it and could have put frets on it that makes it  possible the gutiar is 7/9ths american.

So my point is don't think your not supporting america in bad if you buy a guitar labeled Made in Mexico, because the Deluxe mexico models do in fact use american suppliers and could start out on a CNC router.  Just don't turn your nose up to a really great guitar thinking your going with an american guitar, because the case it ships in is still going to be from Canada  tongue

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

Try the Fender 52 Reissue.  I bought one a few years ago off of craigslist for a pretty good price and now I always seem to be picking it up most often, I really do love the guitar and you can't properly play any Rolling Stones tunes without one.

Two out of the three links that Spider provided are 52 Reissues and so you should always value the recommendations of your elders (well not too old) or one of Uncle Sam's Miguided Children.

The weight is ideal and I strung mine with 11's to 52's and the sound is incredible through either Fender or Marshall amps.  My only complaint is the 7.25" neck radius which is great for chords, but some have had issues with the notes "fretting out" while playing lead.  A good tech can resolve those problems by slightly flattening some of the frets down around 12 to 17 and the cost is minimal.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

I would find a MIM Tele new/used that resonated well/felt vibration of guitar and accoustically sounded loud unplugged of course.  Then purchase some Fralin or Lollar pickups to have a pro tech install and most importantly set-up ...Bam!!

I bought a Joe Strummer Tele, threw in some Lollar Blues Specials and tech set-up....guitar is a beast for under $1k.

Re: GASing for a Tele. Need help choosing!

Take a look at Bill Nash's stuff for a Custom Shop level guitar at an American Deluxe type pricing. I bought a Nash TC-63 a year or so ago and it is an amazing guitar.

This is true for most high-end Fenders, but my Beck Strat came with a MIA G&G Tweed Case. Right now a 2011 American Deluxe in Aged Cherry Burst and maple is the front runner. Too many bells and whistles to pass up like locking tuners, white binding, S-1 Switch for more tonal variety, the color, and that rocking 60th Anniversary Neck Plate (http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ … p;start=15) on all 2011s. It does come with an SKB case, but it gives me a reason to order one of these babies (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Delu … 1152413.gc) and sell the SKB. It looks much cooler, I can really travel in style, and it's 100% MIA  big_smile
