Topic: Burstbucker 3: how hot is it?

I put a B3 in a Les Paul I have and noticed that it sounds darker and not as hot and bright as say my Les Paul Studio (with a 490R).

Is that to be expected for the B3 (I have never used one before)

Ok Burstbucker 3 is hotter output then a 490 but not by much.  I suggest if your tone is a little dark on the bridge replace the tone cap, if its stock its a .022uF so you could either bring the tone cap up on the neck to a .047uF or drop the bridge down to a .015uF.  What this will do is make Tone cap either allow more Treble to pass by going down in uF (microfarads).
If you go up the tone gets darker.  People say they can hear tone differences in paper/oil caps vs. ceramic.  They cost $.99 at radioshack, paper and oil cost around $20.  I doubt you'll hear much difference with the tone turned all the way up, but while your turning it down the tone will back off slower then with the original .022, if you go up to .047 tone will drop faster and be darker at 0.

I recommend the 50's wiring scheme for your LP before you switch out your caps.

Re: Burstbucker 3: how hot is it?

Thanks for the reply.

Both guitars have .022uF tone caps on both.  For some reason, though, the Studio just seems to have more "crunch" than the other guitar (a home build guitar) on the bridge pickup.  The guitar in question uses high quality 500k CTS pots and Orange Drop caps.

I wonder if something else could be sucking out some of the pickup's output?

Where can I find the 50's wiring scheme?

Update: Nevermind, I found it. I switched to 50's wiring and it seems a little brighter, not any hotter though. Now the volume pot really cuts the volume when rolled down, though.

Re: Burstbucker 3: how hot is it?

I never heard anybody complain about that with 50's wiring, you could do what they do for modern wiring and put in a treble bleed mod.  That might even fix the problem you had to begin with.  I still think the lower cap would have better suited you.  Just get a cheap one orange drop or something and try with the orignal wiring you had.

BB3 is not wax potted and I think the 490 is, so you might get more feed back with the BB....

Depends, BB3 in Some guitars like the traditional pro has wax potting but more then likely its not.
