Topic: Zakk Wylde

He's not such a bad guy after all.

"Barbaranne and Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society have joined forces with the nation’s top researchers at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to fight childhood cancer by pledging $1 million to help fund the Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) Laboratory where leading experts develop new drugs to fight and cure cancer in children. Zakk is calling on all chapters, fans and friends to join him in this fight."

Re: Zakk Wylde

Even thought Zakk's music has never been "my cup of tea", I've always thought of him as an mind-blowing guitarist.  So many of my student's look up to him because of his guitar skills, it's great to see him doing something positive.  It's such a great cause.

"There is nothing to it.  You only have to hit the right notes at the right time and the instrument plays itself."---Johann Sebastian Bach

Re: Zakk Wylde

he's an angry attitude guy that talks a lot of smack, but I like the guy... I cannot believe how many times he said "gay" in the christmas issue of GuitarOne magazine.

Re: Zakk Wylde

Zakk has got that biker attitude and drops the F-bomb in half of his sentences, but he's a family man that loves being home with the wife and kids (and dogs).  Hard worker too, with a new Black Label Society album almost every year.  Can't wait for the new Ozzy album on the 22nd I think.  Should be good as Zakk and Ozzy did most of the writing this time, not like on Down To Earth.

Re: Zakk Wylde

Down To Earth was a very forgettable album.

I want to see another Pride & Glory album or zakk wylde Book of shadows II.

zakk is starting to get repetitive with those blazing solos

Re: Zakk Wylde

i agree.  pride and glory and book of shadows is all hes done good in my book.  some of the riffs he wrote with ozzy were cool b ut nothing spectacular.  his solos have no emotion and often times dont fit the song(he plays one type of solo, building up speed to blazing fast), they are apparently just random notes played fast.  talk about a waste of talent, look at about everything this man has done.  the ability to play anything and that is the best he has to offer.  dump black label society, stop trying to sing metal, you cant, and as a final note just stop trying to make yourself metal, because no amount of gym time and beard growth and leather can make you have something you dont.  just listen to his book of shadows or pride and glory album.  this guys bread and butter is not metal and releasing a cd every three months isnt helping matters.

Re: Zakk Wylde

Although I agree I would love to hear him do some of the "Pride & Glory, Book of Shadows" type material, he has a huge following with Black Label Society.  Some of it was getting repetitive, but his last two releases have IMO been a lot more rounded with much better songwriting.

Zakk's always been there for Ozzy, has toured relentlessly with BLS, and has a huge following in the Metal World.  I know a lot of Joe fans are not Zakk fans, but he walks the walk, does his own thing, and you either "love him or hate him" for sure, but Zakk has had plenty of success on his own terms.

Re: Zakk Wylde

he is not genuine.  that bugs me, i dont call it him doing his own thing, i call it him creating a character. i think he tries to hard and his last two releases were the worst of his career, and believe me it has nothing to do with me not liking metal, i love metal.

that said, he does have a big following and bls does put on quite a good live show, so even though i dont like their albums, they are worth your time if you want to see a heavier concert.

Re: Zakk Wylde

let's not pee in his cereal too much - I love zakk wylde.

One thing I CAN say using "college professor" lingo - is he "outline dumps" on his solos.  Like if a student doesn't know how to answer a question, and he just lists everything he knows about the topic just to get it right or partial credit. Outline dumping is not something you should have to do if you have the correct answer.  I feel Zakk does run after run and I'm thinking "yeah- ive heard that before."  People say that about the blues too, so whatever I guess.

I guess if I could have ZW "my way" a la Burger King.... he would integrate more clean sound/acoustic into songs before they get 'heavy' and do the same with interludes and solos. Also, give the solos room to breathe can focus and some harmony vs. art. harmonics all the time... give the solo notes some room to breathe.  We all know he can shred with the darkest of siths (starwars reference), but I think he has to show restraint like that o fa jedi master.

Re: Zakk Wylde

I will say this..  for this tour we rehearsed next to Ozzy and Zakk  and he was such a cool guy.. He came over to our rehearsal and talked guitars and gear and invited us to watch Ozzy's band rehearse..   He is really great and a true guitar hero.  He is misunderstood and very cool thats all I can say.

Re: Zakk Wylde

I agree that Black Label Society could use a little break between albums to maybe come up with something a bit more fresh.  But look at AC/DC for example, same song formula each time and they are still one of the best.  Zakk does what he does.  While he may not have the most original lyrics or the best metal vocals, he is certainly working relentlesly with his own stuff and Ozzy, and knows what works for himself.  We could use a few more guitar heros like Zakk and Joe.
