It was a bad one! Replays .... slow motion.... 6 angles.... a 50/50 ball. Could so have been Jonny on the wrong end of the tackle!  Here's his blog... http://jonnyevansnews.blogspot.com/

I see the early news got it wrong on the name, expected over here with the NFL and NCAA distractions. Thanks for the clarification. Missing Holden will hurt the National Team in the upcoming Gold Cup. I hope he comes back into form after this.  hmm

I still watch the game on TV, but I now go to rugby matches. Easily affordable,

Re: The Football Topic

well after a weekend of International football a few thoughts from me on the England game...

England V Wales, - good to see the Welsh so up for the game, pre match Bellamy summed it up as them being a divided nation that come  together when playing England... Genuinely disappointed that they were not able to make more of a game of it as it was all over way too soon, - and both goals as a result of poor defending, possibly poor pitch surface for the penalty. Once 2-nil up the game was very boring, very flat, but maybe it is time to learn how to shut out a game when 2-nil up? Really good to see Parker doing the job for England, especially after his personal bereavement - hope he can step up against better opposition, and hope we get to see him against Ghana.

Once again Rooney displays why he is such a poor role model for the game, - as a coach of 12 years old kids playing it really does get to me to see this unnecessary bad behaviour and then to hear it shrugged off in the studio by Giggs (or was it Neville?) as "that is what you get with Wayne". This is the wrong message.

JT as captain; - did what was asked, fair play to him, move on.

Re: The Football Topic

My workmates and friends can never figure me out. I never get annoyed or distraught when the team that i have supported for 38 years get beaten.
My reply to them is that my team are rubbish, we'll never win anything and we always seem to be in a relegation battle(well, recently anyway). If we stay up,win something or even stop one of our rivals from winning something, it's a bonus.

Yes, I'm a West Ham United supporter lol

Welcome, Irish brother in suffering, that makes three of us now (you, Hansamike, and me ), making us the largest (known) number of any team's fans here! We also have a Spud and a Manc and a Blade that I know of.

By the way, my period of suffering has entered its 44th year.  sad

May I also add my fraternal greetings to a fellow 'Hammer in Arms'.

We are like the 3 Magii now. Blown to the 4 winds. Cork, Amsterdam and Hamburg.

It's almost like we have tried to flee trauma, sadness and underachievement but like moths to the flame we hover in eternal hope. A bit like the bubbles themselves really.

At least we have (regularly) looked into the abyss, and have no fear any more of the terrors there. I'm starting to learn morse code by flashlight in the hope that I will be able to converse with fellow fans in the Olympic Stadium (if we do go there).

Perhaps the club could even market it as a 'retreat' location. A chance to escape the masses and 'get away from it all'.

Ya see. Humour conquers all.

Re: The Football Topic

as a Spurs fan I can share some of that stoicism, - and this season will probably illustrate very well how well a team can do and how closed the top four really are. Will I be happy with top 5 and a good Champions League run? Yes I have to say that I will. Having been at White Heart Lane and Stamford Bridge for Champions League games this year I can really honestly say that the better atmosphere was at WHL. I could not believe how much Chelsea fans time and effort is spent singing and chanting about other people or clubs rather than getting on and enjoying themselves by celebrating their own team. It would be nice to for a second year keep Man City out of that place but if we did that it would only result in more money being spent and another new manager.

Tonight playing Real Madrid is an honor for Spurs, - looking forward to it.

Maybe I am just biased but out of the top four it is easy to find fault with how they run their Clubs although actually I hate to admit this but out of the 4 you have to admire Wengar for sticking at his plan and being where they are in the league. I cannot celebrate the throw money at it to solve the problem approach of Man City and Chelsea. And I have to say that Sir Alex and Man Utd have this year lost my respect. Clearly there is an attitude problem that has spread like an epidemic between players and fans alike and the result is the disgraceful behavior of Rooney last Saturday. 2 match ban is not enough given the problems that behavior will cause to youth/childrens football.

You do have to admire West Ham for sticking with Grant and up until last weekend turning things around, last week was a blip, - you caught Man Utd on a good day when the anger was for the most part channeled against you.

I'm looking forward to Raffi (as he is known to Ajax fans) having a blinder against the club that didn't want him, though I hope to see Real go through for the one simple reason that I want Barca to have the opportunity to batter them again in the CL semis!  tongue

All credit to Spurs for still being in it, though!  cool

Re: The Football Topic

All that pointless blind hatred, jealousy and anger aside I am hoping that Spurs perform somewhere near the peak of what they can and really have a go at RM tonight.

I know George is no fan of Harry's, but I am and have been since his playing days. He used to have a shop in High Street North around the corner from my home and so I was often able to pass the time of day with him. Met him at the track a couple of times when we wus all grown up and it was a pleasure to buy him a drink for the old days. A gesture he really appreciated.

So I'm hoping Spurs do well tonight and for the rest of the season. I for one would like them to see them become established as a top 4 side.

I don't care what anyone else says London clubs have to work so much harder to be top in the EPL or any other division come to that. What other clubs outside London have to play 8 derby matches per season? If the Hammers survive and QPR come up it will be even more. And don't let anyone say not all these matches are full blooded with nothing stake. Nobody wants to be the chump of London, and these matches can make or break a title bid.

Now thats enough of this blasphemy. Just send Mourinho back to Spain with some thinking to do!

Well, perhaps it is finally over for Spurs at 4-0. Disastrous start and despite a brave first half they have come unstuck big time. Still, they can still have a great night in the return leg. Enjoy.

Congrats to Schalke. Who saw that coming? Fantastic result. Could have even been 6. Don't see Inter getting 4 in G-kirchen without reply, but you never know.

Re: The Football Topic

Two pretty astonishing results tonight, for different reasons. It's going to take Crouch some time to get out of the dog house he now rightly inhabits. How stupid can you be to go in like that twice in the first 15 minutes? Even so, Spurs were particularly disappointing in the second half.

Of course, the Schalke result was one of those rare, utterly unpredictable affairs that happens once in a blue moon. For Inter, Chivu (ex-Ajax) and the needless maker of the own goal both deserve to be shot, while Stankovic's goal of a lifetime will be forgotten in a losing cause. I can't remember the last time two such big games were totally decided in the first leg.

As for tomorrow, I shall be watching Barca, and hope and expect that they will beat the Russian mercenary team. Since there are very few teams on the planet that I loathe as much as Chavscum, I will be hoping for a ManU win.

Re: The Football Topic

we got what we got because we crumbled under pressure.....but the first year in Champions League you not going to go into a match against Real Madrid away from home and be well enough prepared. Harry took a gamble I think with Lennon sick ALL WEEK not just 5 mins before and Bale still carrying his injury, - and Spurs play through the wings. The normally solid Ekkotto looked nervous continually pumping up a long ball rather than get caught with a short pass and have Real back on top of him. Fair play to Jose he knew how to counter Bale with 3 all over him as soon as he had the ball.

Referee had a good game, - still find it sad to see players rolling around like they are shot and appealing for a red card and then applauding it but I guess that their parents did not bring them up well enough!

Real at WHL will still be a good night because we now have nothing to loose and just want to see a good game!

Well now, Barca's 5-1 against Shaktar could have been 8-4 if both sides had taken their best chances.  big_smile I only saw highlights of the other game, but by all accounts it was not a 'great' game - Marco van Basten, for one, was not impressed by what he saw.

It's now odds on that we will have four 'Classicos', Barca vs. Real, within 20 days - the league game in Madrid, the cup final in Valencia, and the CL semis! Can't wait.  tongue

Pay particular attention to the second goal!  cool

Re: The Football Topic

No surprises in any of the QF returns this week, so we're still on course for a Barca - ManU final rematch.

All credit to Spurs for getting as far as they did, a fantastic achievement for a club in its first CL season! Going out to Real is no kind of shame.

I can't see Schalke stopping ManU in the semis, but then nobody thought they would beat Inter either - they are the real surprise package of this season, especially in view of their poor Bundesliga form.

We now have four 'classicos' to look forward to, starting with the league game at the Bernabeu this Sat. night, a game that will probably attract a global audience of several hundred million!  cool

Re: The Football Topic

So finally someone has come out and said it.

Avram Grant says the relegation teams need 41 points to survive. Brave of him really, as his team at the moment seem least equipped to actually get any more points at all.

If ever there was a reason to underline the absolute folly of these 'in season' friendly internationals between countries, then Scott Parker has to be a great example.

At 30+ plus he unlikely to figure as a permanent England team fixture. At best (unfortunately for him) he will be a peripheral figure.

But for the Hammers he has been a giant this year. Since the internationals a couple of weeks ago he hasn't played and now we have lost to Manchester U., Bolton and Villa at home.

Sure, one player doesn't make a team, but when you are West Ham, he is the only worth often worth pulling on the shirt, and now for some meaningless damn friendly any chance of staying up is fast disappearing. I certainly don't begrudge him the chance to win a cap, but at some point someone has to say, who is paying the wages here?

I gotta say, I am no great lover of international football, finding it often sterile and unrepresentative, certainly in Englands case. Whilst Parker himself may have been flattered to have been asked I think given his age and our league position he should have said 'No'.

Of course it isn't all over yet but the candidates are becoming clearer by the day and those capable of getting out of it fewer and fewer. Chelsea and Manchester City next. Can't see much joy out of those two based on our current form.

41 points? Might as well be 141

Whats that creaking noise?.................sounds like a trapdoor to me..................

Re: The Football Topic

Saw the game live on TV.

Incredible result in a way. In the seond half Barcelona literally wiped the floor with Real. I honestly thought at one point Real must ahve had a player sent off because it was sooo one sided.

But for all that possession and irresistable dominance there was no end result. In fact, Barcelona themselves were guilty of completely over-playing in their approach. They were constantly trying to walk the ball into the net. Sure the Real keeper did well on 1 or 2 occasions, but Barcelona got tripped up by their own footballing arrogance here.

Ronaldo's goal was beautifully executed. In extra time Real were much better and held possession more. One could say the Barca keeper could have done better on the goal, but he was moving in the other direction and clearly off balance.
No, much as I don't like him Ronaldo jumped early and almost 'waited' in the air for a great contact header.

Mind you, I'm sure this was a big 'wake up' call to Barcelona. They won't be making that mistake any more.

Certainly put a smile on Morinho's face.
