Re: Pittsburgh pictures
Great pictures - awesome color. Loved all the little extra ones at the beginning. What's with the mortarboards? We already know they should all graduate at the top of the class!

Re: Pittsburgh pictures
Superb photos Jim. Really sharp and some great expressions and poses. Love the venue too, what a beautiful ceiling.
Unfortunately, the flickr show stopped at the shot before this one.
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice! Good clear shots. No fog machine at that venue, apparently... (I had issues with that)

Jim - great pictures!!! You took these with a Nikon D40, correct? Did you use the kit lens or the 55-200? I had a major mishap of sorts at Reading...can you enlighten me on what camera settings you used inside the venue? I did make one critical mistake - set it to apurture priority. I have taken fantastic shots with the D40 on many other occasions, but Reading was a major malfunction.
If you could PM me I would appreciate it....Thanks for any tips!!!

Re: Pittsburgh pictures
Thanks everyone for the compliments, I appreciate it!
Yes, the D40, just an 18-105. I've been fortunate to be sitting up close for the last 4-5 shows so that has been sufficient. I'd planned to buy a D90 before the show, just didn't happen. Somewhere on this forum there's a thread about camera settings. The key, I believe, is "shutter" priority and find the best speed (adjust, adjust, adjust, through the first couple of songs), besides making sure the speed was good, I set the ISO to 1600 (helps w/ the low lighting), and the focus mode to AF-C (for fast moving objects, aka, smokin' Joe!) I know how it goes with a bad set of pictures. As has happened before, I have to take 1000 pictures to get 50-100 decent ones. Digital 'film' is cheap For the few I posted, there are definitely a large amount of blurry ones (which is disappointing, it's just a challenging lighting environment). Each show I've been trying to capture a good ending shot of the band, but there's always someone looking up or the facial expressions aren't good, the one posted is probably the best one I've gotten.

Ewww, fog machine, that would suck. I can't say I've seen a fog machine at any of the Joe shows I've been to.

Re: the mortarboads, I thought I'd read they had visited the Cathedral of Learning (aka tower of ignorance) the day before the show.

Paul,
If you still have your photos that were causing you grief because of the fog machine, you might still be able to pull some great shots out of them if you have photoshop or some other photo editing software. If you do, open your photo and try adjusting/increasing the contrast and or increasing the blacks, this usually does the trick and also creates an interesting look with the lighting and the fog.....
examples of this are http://www.flickr.com/photos/photogal19 … 234777811/

Hope this helps! If you have a photo you really like, you can send it to me and I can see if it can be rescued!

Re: Pittsburgh pictures
Thanks, Rhonda, that's a good tip, and a generous offer. I'll play around with this on some of my more foggy pics... I actually did that for many of the shots I converted to black&white (sometimes with an increase in "clarity" in Lightroom), but didn't think to try that on the color ones.
BTW, I sent you an e-mail (via this forum's mailer) a few days ago re: camera gear and such, did you get it? Or maybe you're just guarding your secrets?
