Topic: Will Joe need a 2nd guitarist on the Dust Bowl tour?

I've listened to Dust Bowl a couple of times, and like the album.  I've noticed on even the first couple of tracks, a lot of layering on the guitar parts, which I don't think were as prevalent on previous JB albums.  A lot of complex rhythmic grooves with some tasteful lead breaks over the top of them.  All obviously played by Joe...

It's lead me to ask how Joe may look to recreate the same soundscape in a live setting?  Would he perhaps add a second guitarist to the band to pick up the rhythm parts?  Or just rearrange the songs to suit single guitar?  Will they still sound as 'full'?

There's only room for one guitar player on that stage.

Well......it'd probably help him out but I doubt it somehow! I guess the hammon will take a lot of the chordal stuff. let Joe concentrate on the singin' and strummin'  big_smile

I would say the exact same thing if he ever decides he doesn't want to sing anymore. That's my thing.

All Joe has to do is get a bunch of doublenecks. He can play lead and rythm at the same time.  tongue

Who says it has to sound exactly the same, and it won't, but it won't be lame, a hallmark of many past and still current day performer.  But not Joe Bonamassa.  Not the same, yet not lame!  Also, Rick Melick's finger paintings more than make up for any other possible thin stringed fretted accompaniment.

- to put across a different opinion....

I felt that a couple of the songs at Hammersmith show last year could have done with a second guitarist, - when the larger venues are played I think that there are times when some of the songs would benefit from a sound closer to the studio version.

- BoJH contained some layered pieces, the video shoing the recording of "Stop" shows this:

worth a look as it is superb video!

If he was trying to pull off these songs with just a Strat I might agree, emphasis might, but still adding not likely.  His Gibson array handles much and the band and Joe's vocals are transcending the expected trade-downs.  An example expressed by some, although I am not in agreement, is that currently Slow Train, as it transpires on the studio album, is too thick in the guitar sonic department and comes off better when it is a bit thinned live.  I just see them as differing versions of the same song.  Even different month-to-month live, so why the big need for studio repetitiveness? Just offering a different differing opinion.   Probably why Joe doesn't play a lot of songs live is that they might indeed be served better with another guitar.  I could agree with that.  But that's another musician to pay and mouth to feed and not truly ever necessary in my live listenings so far.  I had actually thought that first off with Bridge To Better Days when it was first introduced live, and I first heard the opening riffs being joined by the rest of the band and thought for a few seconds it needed a second guitarist part playing...
If Rick went elsewhere one day it might be an option to consider, but......naaahhhhh!   tongue

Well if Joe wants a guitar player then I would love the opportunity to do that ! It's these little breaks in life that you wish for!  I don't think the band needs another guitarist joes sound is so big and unique big_smile  , it wouldn't be right !  But would still rip his hand off for the gig!!!! lol
