Topic: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

I'm not moaning but!!!
I'm thinking I'm not the only one who is a bit " baffled" by the price of joes sig baffle??? I can't believe how exspensive it is I would buy one as they do the job but I don't get why they have to make them so pricey!  The fuzz face cost a whole lot less and that's a common named product . Did any of you guys buy one?

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

Have you seen how much plexiglass costs per sheet anyway?!

Seems to me it's at least five times the price of glass.

No I don't know how much plexiglass cost at all !
Is that a good price or stupidly expensive? I spoke to the distributiors for clearsonic and a Joe b baffle will cost me £300 I really don't know if these are worth getting?

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

dont suppose it would be too difficult to make one, couple of sheets of plexi cut to size and some stainless steel piano hinge, cant be more than a hundred quid for that.

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

I made an 1/8" plexi baffle for about $60.  It's a single hinge and is tall and wide enough to cover a standard 4X12 cabinet.  Easy project and didn't cost too much.  I also made a 4 piece baffle just like Joe's using 1/4" plexi and the plastic clearsonic style hinges and it wasn't cheap.  It's tall and wide enough to cover 2 marshall 1936 cabs (side by side) looks professional, but was a pain to build.

To buy thick 1/4" plexi and the plastic hinges and build it all yourself, it's not saving you much if any money than to just buy one from clearsonic.  In order to make a 4 piece shield out of 1/8" and some extended hinges you can get everything you need from Lowes and it will be good enough if you don't want to spend the money on the heavy duty version.

Steve, I'm UK based and did a Heath Robinson one with this stuff for my 2x12 (sits tall ways on an auralex gramma)

Came next day and postage was relative cheap. Pretty sure I spent under £50 in total and it's fine for my occasional gigging needs but the hinges on the Clearsonic are much better designed!

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

Thanks that is very intresting!! big_smile

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

Joe's baffles work with two 4x12 cabinets. It's a W shape, where it seems you could get away with a V for a single 4x12. So when you get a JB baffle, it's like you're buying two of them that are stuck together.

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

I built one awhile ago with 1/4" acrylic from Lowes.  I made a V shaped one that cost me about $120.  It's taller than Joe's (24"x40" panels) so it works with angled or vintage tall cabs.  If I was to do it over, I'd use a different hinge and thinner acrylic.  A 1/4x24x48 sheet is about $60 where I live.

Courtesy of Lowes Home Improvement stores.  I ordered the hinge from a case making company that makes trophy cases and drum shields etc.. forget the name.

Do these shields help in a home playing/bedroom environment and if so, how?

Thanks.

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

I was thinking of making one as I'm a glazer, and it shouldn't cost much(£50)is there a required distance they should be placed from your cab or  does it  not matter, give or take a few inches

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

You could use others materials for baffling, results may vary-too complicated to comment further on recommendations I'd make.  Purpose is the huge practical aspect, and for Joe it is exactly as he states-cut down the direct sound path to the audience up front and still retain the amp's characteristics at the settings he chooses with much of the monitoring properties he needs intact and preventing unwarranted interactions from onstage.  The clear acrylic is visually aesthetic as you can see the amps and mic (also good for sound engineer to see wink ), it is very, very tough, road worthy, much lighter than glass, and glass would break under travel unless highly tempered and the price of that makes acrylic look like a bargain.  If you need 'em, really need 'em, get 'em.  It's been a "family" / friends type thing from the beginning.  I don't need 'em (yet  tongue ) but I can recommend them to those seeking the intent that encompasses the entirety of the needed result.  big_smile

Like all things musical it's a bit of a compromise and dependant upon your own perception and preference of sound.

The general idea is that for live use you can crank the power stage to a sufficient level to get a good tone without wiping out your band members (and the audiences) hearing but still having the miked true sound from behind the baffle to the Front Of House.

However at home volume it makes your amp less "beamy" in terms of sound direction but it does affect tone (esp. top end). You can get much the same affect by turning the speaker cabinet around.

Personally I have London Power Scaling on my amp so whether at home or live I can get the cranked power stage sound at any volume.

However I like the affect of the baffle and use mine at home, practice and live.

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

ps. you can also further affect your tone by the placement of the baffle from the cab and the angle of the "v"

Re: Clearsonic baffle price!!!

Thanks for the valued feedback - apprecaite it.
