Topic: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

I love the the new album but I won't get into it because everyone else has already and I have nothing that is so profound it must be written.  That being said......  Joe I did the tone in the main solo of Prisoner.  The beginning is super sexy and a classic tone but I have no idea what you are doing to get such a thick throaty tone in that solo.  It almost has a PRS sound to it like some Orianthi at blues fest in 2006 (sorry I had to reference her but her tone at that show was killer and there was no pop music played).  I have thought about it for a few days now....Is it your fuzz face that is getting that tone.  Please help guys!

It sounds like Fuzz Face in the first half of the solo. I also wonder if he's using a Strat on that song. I almost hear some Jeff Beck-ish type mojo going on.

I was thinking he was using a strat in the beginning for sure.  thanks for the input.  Lets try and get the specifics worked out.  It would be some good marketing for his new sig pedal too

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

Just another quick thought..... I just overhauled my new Gibson LP with new wiring, original bees that still read at spec range, handwound Sheptones, 50's wiring and of course reflector knobs.  I did get the Peter Greene mod (magnet flipped in bridge) this offers the out of phase tone.  I have been able to dial in with my knobs only (not touching amp) to get the tone in the beginning of the song.  That is the only other way I could think he got the beginning tone without a strat and using an LP

I'm not sure about the guitars, but one thing I notice about this tune that at times it sounds like a really good 80's rock power ballad....anyone else hear that?  It's like Joe meets Dokken....

I wonder if this is the track that he used the Jeff Beck strat on?  In the credits for gear used he says he used a Jeff Beck signature model strat.  Sure sounds like a strat.

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

I think "The Meaning of the Blues" is the track that is most likely to have the Jeff Beck Strat, but it sounds to me like he used it at least on part of the solo of "Prisoner"

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

Deffo Strat or 335?

"Who wants an orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips...."

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

Great feedback guys!  I am leaning toward a  335 as well.  I want to find out the effects he is using too

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

In an interview in the newer guitar world he talks about playing a gibson hollowbody with 3 P90's.  I cant remember if its a 135 or 295... It new if I remember right.  He may have run it thru a Marshall Artist 30.

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

Here is the goods from Icon on a post earlier on the main page in response to me thinking I heard a strat tone on Prisoner.

Joe used a 56 sunburst Strat "for the fills" on Prisoner - but reverted to the LP for the main guitar part. Have to say when I first heard it on the Planet Rock feature I was sure there was a strat speaking to me. I've just played my CD through for the first time and Prisoner has just blown me away. It had to be the closing track too - t'was meant to be.

The Beck Strat was used on The Meaning of the Blues. He also used a black Strat he calls his Richie Blackmore for the slide parts on the album.
The Fender buffs may also be interested to know Joe used his 53 Butterscotch Tele on No Love on the Streets.

Hope this helps,
Rick

Re: Calling all tonefreaks! New sound on Prisoners???

I wont disagree with Joe's words... but i just got a Guitar World with Jeff Beck on the cover... and Joe mentions his dad said that he was thrilled he broke out the Fenders again.  He corrected him and said it was a P90 Gibson.  But then again I might be confused... He could have been talking about the BCC album coming soon.  So I am not sure.
