Topic: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

Hey everyone,

Got my copy of Dust Bowl yesterday.  I was looking through the liner notes and it said that JB played the Marshall Class 5 amp on the CD.  Anyone know what track or tracks he played this amp on and maybe waht settings?  I have a Class 5 Amp and I love it!  Just like to know.  Thanks!

Definitely sounds like 'Prisoner' to me....

The bend at 4:28 on the track sounds a lot like the bend at 1:28 on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmxcrYSqSb4

I know you can't really tell from one note but that's just my guess!:)

Did Joe play 3 Class 5's chained together at Crossroads festival?  Never heard of him playing them out anywhere.  Always thought they were a backstage amp.  That's cool though!

I've been wondering this too. Would be interesting thing to find out from the man himself.

I think he used Marshall Bluesbreakers at Crossroads but I am not positive. They looked like Bluesbreakers at least.

Re: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

I'm pretty sure it was a Bluesbreaker.... because I saw the same amp again in Milwaukee for Greg Koch to plug into.
It must be one of Joe's backups on tour.

Re: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

Prisoner solo sounds very fuzz like...a small amp being pushed hard?

There's no oomph of a 100w sound going on, yet still a very nice sound. It could be anything though...and yes, it'd be cool to know.

Also, Paul Stanley said they used an Orange Microcrush to overdub and mix into on of the solos on Sonic Boom (not a favourite album of mine, but interesting to know) - you never know what is going on behind that mix.

Re: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

I thought those looked like Bluesbreakers also.  I have the Blu Ray Dsic and watched it a few times.  Either way, he gets great tone from everything he plugs into.  Just curious.  Would be great to hear from Joe which tracks he used the Class 5 Amp.

That is one sick video. Thanks for sharing that gem.

Re: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

I gave Dust Bowl a listen today, and I'm fairly certain he might have used the Class 5 on Slow Train. The solos at least they have the tone of a small tube amp being pushed. Hopefully Joe can weigh in so we can stop wondering lol.

Funny you should bring this up. I talked to Joe the other night by his bus and asked the exact same question. Drumroll...... He used it for the solos on The Whale That Swallowed Jonah. My original guess was Heartbreaker.

Thanks for the info. I'm curious if he plugged straight in or if he used any effects.
I love the tone he has on that song. I'm also curious what amps and effects were used for the main sound on that song.

If I had a class 5, I'd want to put a bigger speaker, replace the caps/resistors to vintage spec ones, and put a mercury magnetics OT in it!

Re: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

One of these days I would like to get a speaker cabinet to help get a bigger sound.. just don't have the $$$ to do it right now.  As far as effects for it I have a Tube Screamer that gets me very close to Joe's sound.  I use a chorus pedal and an occasional delay pedal. I get reverb on it when I run it through my digitech RP150.  But then it takes a little away from the amp.  I love this little amp! The one thing that I dislike is that there is not an overall volume.  I like the gain, but would love to be able to clean it up.  Maybe it would if I were running it through a cabinet.  But anyway, thanks for the info on which track it was used on.

It sounds great through my Sonic 4x12 or my Carvin 2x12 with the 100 watt British Vintage Series speakers. Lately I've been using it at band practice instead of my DSL 100 and the 4x12. Much easier to tote around. With volume on 4ish it has a nice overdriven sound with humbuckers and cleans up nicely with guitar volume. I just push the leads with a tubescreamer and a DD3

Re: What track is JB playing the Marshall Class 5 Amp?

I'm wondering if I need to change the pots on my Epi Les Paul?  I would love to be able to turn down the volume and get a cleaner sound.  Righ now, it's clean, but just not as clean as I would like to get.  Maybe that would aslo help with a cab too.  I love this amp and it sounds great.  Also thinking of getting burstbuckers installed in the Les Paul.

You can solder in some cts pots and bumblebee caps and burstbuckers. You can find then fairly priced on ebay.
