Re: Is 100 watts too much?

Who needs clean sounds? lol   I went back to a pair of 100 watt amps after dabbling in small amps for a while.  I had an Orange Tiny Terror and a Blackheart Handsome Devil and 2 4x12 cabinets with an ABY switch.  Those EL84 amps just dont have any a$$ to them.  I missed that WHUMP!  So, I got a 6l6 tubed amp and an EL34 amp and use them together now.  Those little amps at 15 watts can still hurt you ears!  But there's no ballz in them when you wind em up.  So, up the road they went! cool

Re: Is 100 watts too much?

I've used everything from 50 w Marshalls, 90w Mesa's, Fenders etc

Currently sporting a Matchless Independance 35w head through a 2x12 and it absolutely sings once it gets up to 11-12 on the volume, there aint much difference to me in terms of actual volume to even the Mesa's, headroom can be a factor though, I dont think I would like to drop much lower than 20w for a gigging amp unless I was just going to dime it all the time....which is a distinct possibility!  big_smile

I was asking Nik (of Ceriatone) if 100 watts wasn't too loud (in compairing with a 50 watt) and his answer was:

"100 watts is only 2 times louder than 10 Watts"

From that point a didn't care anymore if it's 100 Watts or something. I've got a Marshall JCM900 100W in my bedroom of 4m x 3m so....

Nik is about to release a 200 watt ODS with KT88's, then you could join the 200 watt club.
On the serious side, I regret not buying a 100 watt, there is no substitute for clean headroom.
