Topic: Anthony Robles/NCAA Wrestling Championships...

With so much focus on NCAA Basketball and it's "March Madness", last night while channel surfing I was lucky enough to run across a very inspirational story about a one legged wrestler by the name of Anthony Robles. It was the NCAA Wrestling Championships and this young man was wrestling the defending champion in the 125 pound title match. I wrestled a little in high school and trust me, I know how hard this sport is. As a matter of fact, I would put it above football in how physically demanding it is. Going pound for pound, muscle against muscle, speed against speed against another man is one of the most physically stressing things a human can do. In these matches the men wrestle each other for three periods; three minutes the first period and then two more two minute periods after that. The winner is either determined by who has the most points at the end of a match or, if one man can pin another on his back. Well, this young man with one leg beat the defending champion 7 to 1 completing his life long dream and a perfect season. What a wonderful and inspirational thing it was to view on TV. smile

Re: Anthony Robles/NCAA Wrestling Championships...

Thanks Roy, I saw where he won his division over an excellent Iowa wrestler. His upper body strength is incredible. It is beyond demanding, when I played high school football they had us linemen working out with the wrestlers in the off season. I hated it, much worse than any football practice I ever endured. And they would laugh at us when we gassed out after a few rounds. He is a real inspiration to all, and intends on being a motivational speaker. Wish I had an attitude like that, he just refused to lose.

Re: Anthony Robles/NCAA Wrestling Championships...

I posted this on the FB thread but a local wrestler was interviewed re this since he had faced him in the State Championships. He said the upper body advantage is due to not having the 20 pounds of leg, thus placing him in a "lower weight class" if you can say that. The local said he had him on his back and Robles flipped him off easily and reversed him.  Once on the mat, he rules! Sure is a fine story of a person overcoming adversity. smile
