Not to be argumentative, but why do you think DG is under rated?  He is about as famous a guitarist as there is.  And of course Comfortably Numb contains the greatest guitar solo of all time. Period.

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

There are a number of very underrated musicians.

For my Guitar Players,  I have to go with Paul Kossoff.  Michael Schenker.  Uli Roth.

They are Musician's musicians but will never be recognized in the mainstream public and will never get there due honor in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Or any awards.  Those that were fortunate enough to have experienced them know they are in the upper echelon.  So much depth to each one.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

Sure we know of DG and how ggreat he is others don't have a clue.
So my point was if more people knew of DG he would be rated higher
in the guitar world. I think DG has done some of the best guitar work
and solos and don't think he gets all the reconition he deservse.
IMO....

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

This one's easy for me.....We have a local blues artist in Oregon named "Terry Robb"..... he is not very well known or not known at all in many parts of the country. He is, hands down, the best giutarist I have ever witnessed....He is simply amazing....You will never see anyone else do the things he can on guitar...period! I am seeing him for FREE tonite at the local casino....he has very vew discs and most of them are acoustic.....he can play anything from delta blues to bluegrass to Jimi Hendrix....he does have some u-tube material, although most of the sound quality is poor. Seriously...this guy is amazing! He did an album in the 80"s with Curtis Salgado...some of you may recognize that name...and one of his biggest influences was the late John Fahey...master of the acoustic...

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

Here's a few, mostley underrated due to their age but in their hayday highly repected:

Leslie West, Rick Derringer, Pat Travers, Ritchie Ranno, Jon Butcher.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

Mark Knopfler

Just in the last couple of years, my husband uncovered Knopfler's entire catalog, he's all over the place with different music.  He made me a mix of his favorites for my car, other than the popular Dire Straits tunes, I'm not sure where any of the songs are in Knopfler's timeline.

Mark has such a unique signature sound, he is fantastic!  I'm not a guitar player, so I'm struggling here to describe what I mean, but Knopfler is an excellent guitarist and highly skilled; his style is his own. (whatever he's doing, I never heard anyone else capture)  And his voice reminds me of a polished up Bob Dylan voice, very good delivery of lyrics.

Johnny A

Hubby turned me on to him too, lots of people never even heard of him.

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

Peter Frampton, Steve Howe, Dickie Betts, Mick Ralphs.

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

Angela mentioned, Mark Knopfler, Curby mentioned, Steve Howe, both on a par with others, the likes of Dave Gilmour IMO. Underrated? by anyone over the age of 30 and has a keen interest in guitar based music..... definitely not!!
I will throw in another name, Ritchie Blackmore. Ask someone in the street who looks under 30,  who Ritchie Blackmore is ? [ even with a picture to help them] the answer..... more often than not, would be...  WHO ?  roll

Just thought of another ..... Tony McPhee ( Groundhogs )

It's amazing, to me, how many people only know Frank's "novelty" songs or have never even heard his music.  When I look at lists like 100 Greatest Guitarists ( http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/b … uitar.html ) and see Frank at number 52 I feel he's underrated.  And I know that Frank thought ranking guitarists was "a stupid hobby" and that he said "my technique as a guitar player is fair".  So my opinion the he is underrated is just that - my opinion.

And I thought his grave was unmarked - not empty.  Why would it be empty?
