Topic: My first Fret job.
So I did my first crown and polish tonight. I used masking tape for the fret board, and borrowed some tools from work. Stewmac sells great files for doing this job as well as fret masks but I went cheap. I put a sharpie mark on the top of each fret so I could see how much I was removing from the sides. I started off slow swiping my diamond file one stroke at a time but my files just were not sharp enough to go that slow. The filing took 4 hours so you could say I took my time. Then I polished everything down with a 30um Silicon Carbide polishing film to smooth everything out. Then I moved to a 16um film followed by a 3um and a 1um aluminum Oxide film. I could have went a step further and polished with a .05um aluminum oxide but my hands hurt so bad right now.
The only thing I wish I could have done was level off all the frets instead I left everything the height it was and just tried to shoot for making the flat parts as skinny as I could without taking off a bunch of meat. No strings as of yet on it but I'm very proud of my work and expect no issues with what I've done. Next up is that stupid crack in the back of the head stock. I found a industrial Locktite epoxy that is like water. I'm hoping it will wick down the crack and say wet long enough for me to wipe off the mess on top.
