Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

the pictures and videos today were shocking, as are the potential numbers of dead given the missing figures. Sad words from a mother who was swept away and lost grip of her daughter that is now missing.  Cannot begin to imagine how that would feel.

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

The damage in NorCal was greatest in Crescent City near the Oregon border & Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor. Santa Cruz got hit hard due to it's position in Monterey Bay. As the wave hit the crescent shape of Monterey Bay it squeezed to a point as it moved to the inland most part of the shore then entered the channel into the harbor adding a bit more to the equation. Damage was in the millions @ the harbor with boats rising with the surge snapping their mooring lines. Some were swamped, some capsized and several broke free and got sucked out into the ocean. Damage here is nothing compared to Japan.

Incredible power. The reactor was flooded with sea water today to help cool it. God help them all.

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

I spent the weekend away but at most times found myself needing to keep informed of what was going on.

Horrendous for the Japanese. They will come through this, of course, but a huge price to pay.

This morning 2000 bodies washed up on the beach. A second explosion at the Atomic Plant. The repercussions will be felt for years to come.

It's at times like this I can be grateful to have been born and to live where I do, where natural catastrophes such as this, on this scale, are very few and far between.

Modern communications brings the experience into our homes and I can't even begin to imagine the horror of losing everything, family, home etc, and the massive uncertainty it brings with it, should one be fortunate to survive the intial effects.

I hope the situation stabilises quickly and allows the Japanese nation the chance to recover, regroup and rebuild. It seems the nuclear lesson though is one we are still learning, and Fukushima shows how far we still have to go.

It doesn't matter how many safeguards and systems are in place, there are inherent dangers with this technology.

They will get this plant under control and the earthquake and tsunami will be responsible for far more deaths than any nuclear leak. In this light the industry will see it as acceptable losses against what MIGHT have happened.

Maybe though the Japanese might just see it as unacceptable. They, more than anymore, should appreciate the effect of nuclear holocaust. They are a creative and inventive race. Hopefully they will review their dependance on this source of energy given the geological make up of the country and show the world the way to an inherently safer, energy conserving future.

Just another forlorn hope I guess. But Mother Nature will go on teaching until we start taking notice. We can depend on that..............

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

day by day the news gets worse on this human tragedy.  sad

Looks like meltdown could be a risk now:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12733393

Technicians are battling to stabilise a third reactor at a quake-stricken Japanese nuclear plant, which has been rocked by a second blast in three days.

Heard on the news that at least 16 dogs from UK and USA where now searching for the living buried under debris. Also saw a clip of the rescuers having to evacuate because they thought another Tsunami was on it's way, - but luckily it did not amount to anything serious.

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

Thanks for your thoughtful and eloquent contribution, Mike! You at least understand the importance of these events for all of us, while some here continue to spam us with dog show links during a mega disaster. Unreal. I see that Angela Merkel has put German nuclear plants back on the agenda and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if serious discussions about our global nuclear future resurfaced in most countries with a major reliance on nuclear energy.

The latest news is also worryingly unreal - the rods have been exposed due to human error! Someone forgot to ensure the fuel supply for the pumps pumping in seawater as coolant. At this moment, it's still unclear how long the rods have been/are exposed or if the pumps are working again. How this plays out now is likely to influence much decision making on this issue.

This is very troubling.  What a horrible situation.   sad

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

This quake was upgraded to a 9.0 on the richter scale.
I heard some scary perspective this weekend
Given that each whole number is 10 times the previous:
This quake was equivilant to experiencing the devistation of 10 earthquakes of 8.0
This quake was equviilant to experiencing the devistation of 100 earthquakes of 7.0

Now, I've only been in southern California for about 12 years, and I've felt 2 quakes of around 7.0, each seveal hundred miles from my home and they shook the living daylights out of us and scared the you know what out of my family.

I struggle to comprehend the utter terror that the Japanese people endured and are continuing to endure through this devistation.

The entire island of Japan moved 10 feet during this quake.  If that's not bad enough, couple this with a wave of water with incalculable force devistating the countryside.

God Bless these people

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

I'll have to chime in here on the topic of Nuclear Energy. I was a reactor technician, specializing in maintenance and health physics in the US Navy for 2 1/2 years, so I can speak from direct knowledge, not emotion and innuendo. There has never been a major accident at a nuclear facility that was not attributable to human error. The facilities in Japan were built to withstand a very strong earthquake, not a record event. The last known large event in northeastern Japan was 1300 years ago and that fault was not expected to produce a temblor of this magnitude. The quake was so strong, it shifted the earth's rotation 4 inches! The containment design of the fuel chamber is still intact. The releases of radioactive steam and explosions have been from the turbine building, not the reactor chamber, and are related to the electrolysis of sea water, producing hydrogen gas. Nuclear power, effectively managed by written procedures for each activity requiring multiple checks of each action, is as safe as any other technology. This has been proven by the safe operation of numerous reactors in the Navy since the advent of nuclear power. I pray that the operators can control this disaster.

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

The wonderful news that a 70 year old woman has been rescued today is sadly tempered by news from the reactor - the Prime Minister claims not to have been adequately informed by the power company and some foreign broadcasters and companies are recalling their employees from Japan, the Nikkei is collapsing with potentially disastrous knock-on effects for western economies still trying to recover from the last global whammy.

Things appear grim now with the reactor cores. Trace fallout to be expected in the Pacific Northwest, reminding me of the incendiary balloons sent across in WW2. Hobson's choice in Japan. sad

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

This is just terrible.  I can't even imagine something like this happening here and the latest news does not look promising.  Especially for the radiation workers remaining behind at the plant.  Risk of further release of radioactivity is very high.  Just heartbreaking. sad

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

One very small bit of luck. The prevailing winds are offshore into the Pacific from the reactor sites. Pray they stay that way and the fallout misses populated areas, unlike Chernobyl. A second bout with atomic disaster for the Japanese is beyond cruel.

JAPAN- My thoughts are with all of you.

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

Tonight's CL game between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan started with an impressive minute's silence and the message "With you Japan" on the big screens - the players wore black armbands.

I feel we should all doff our hats in deep admiration for those brave 40-50 workers who have stayed inside the Fukushima plant to try and deal with what's happening there, even if it costs them their lives!

Re: !!!!!TSUNAMI!!!!!

I have a really good friend that was just there on business.  We were just talking about how civil they are as a culture and country.  Just so wrong for this to be happening to them.  Unfortunately the Low pressure system will pass and winds will be back towards land in a day or so.  tragic.......
