Topic: The Next Step in Life…

I was going to call this, “Retirement: The Final Frontier”, but decided not to because of the fatalistic sound to it.

As of tomorrow, I will be leaving my long and famous (infamous?) career with AT&T with nearly 36 years of service to this company. I really was planning on retiring at the end of the year, but old “Ma Bell” found some extra cash in her apron and thus made an offer a few weeks ago. Then after deciding to put in the offer, she turned around and even sweetened the deal because of lack of interest. Well, if you’re like me at all, more money is not something one usually says no to, so I put in for it. This past Friday, I learned that in fact I was chosen as one of the candidates. So Monday morning I’m headed into “work” for the last time to sign my papers and have a final exit interview. Of course, sweet items to eat including warm morning cinnamon rolls will be provided by me for the crew as is customary at our office. wink

I look back on a career that spans quite a time frame as I held several different types of positions with AT&T. Beginning with toll investigation, where the first day I walked into the office and found out I would be working with all women…..not a bad thing, because most of them were quite lovely, to service representative dealing with customer problems (YIKES!!), to outside tech (yes, hanging 20 feet in the air on a wood pole with two little pins on your shoes and a belt around your waist securing you from a fall)  to the current job that I have where I survey and analyze switch problems over a 17 State area. It really has been a wonderful ride, frustrating at times yes, but gratifying during most of my days spent there.  As I normally responded most days when asked how I was, I said, “I’m dancing on home plate!” smile

What lies next you ask? Honestly, I don’t know. I would like to continue helping out a few charitable organizations that I do now like “StringsforaCURE”. In addition, my time is sure to expand helping to spread the word of such great artists as Joe Bonamassa. Silly, but when asked by my financial counselor what I would like to do now that I will be retired, I responded as either being a young band’s road manager or maybe a “senior” roadie for a band. There are many places in my own Country that I haven’t been to and what better way to do it? Of course, I would expect some small payment for my services, but I would not need healthcare coverage as I will have that in retirement from AT&T. Do you hear that Joe? cool

In any case, I really am looking forward to this next step in my life and plan to stay right here to contribute and read about the world of Joe Bonamassa and his followers. After all, you’re all just like family. wink

Roy

P.S. And to Jim Moody…I picture Jim putting his hands on his forehead and saying, "My God, this guy will be on here all the time!!" Don’t worry Jim, I’ll have more time to post here, but I’ll try to contain myself for your sake. wink big_smile

Here's to the newest full-time Bonagroupie! Who has the record for the number of Joe shows seen in one year? Michael? Anyhow, the ball and chain of endentured servitude is lifted. Chase that Bonacruiser around the world! And for Pete's sake, get yourself a good recorder and archive the good stuff for those of us who are still corporate minions!  big_smile

Best wishes for a long and happy retirement Roy. And don't forget to get out of the house; or Dawn will have you cojones hanging on the wall next to those Davy Knowles photos!  tongue

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: The Next Step in Life…

Roy -  Here's wishing you health and well being in your retirement.  Have some fun.

Re: The Next Step in Life…

Congratulations on making the push to the endgame Roy. Now stay active. Engage yourself in an exercise program on a regular basis. It has done wonders in our household for our continued active lifestyle and I've got a few years on you. Chase that bus and I hope we cross paths soon. I hear they may be looking for a greeter at the Walmart, you could proselytize the ignorant with Joeknowledge and kill 2 birds... lol

Re: The Next Step in Life…

In this day and age just leaving your job on your own terms is a blessing.  My former company I gave my life to (31years) was sold to a Japanese outfit and before the ink was dry on the paperwork every VP in the company was terminated.  They then went through a spreadsheet and eliminated senior employees with higher salaries.  Some like me got early retirement and others were just walked out.
I wasn't comfortable being a retiree, especially at my age, and continue to work.  Trying to find a decent job these days is very difficult with so many qualified unemployed.
My best advice to you is stay busy and find a hobby.  Donate your time to your church or a preferred charity.  One thing I haven't done, but may do in the future is do a radio gig at one of our local colleges.  Everybody in the forum knows how crazy we are about music and maybe we should both check into a radio show.
Whatever you do make sure it involves a lot of fun and good luck!

Re: The Next Step in Life…

Congratulations and welcome to the club Roy!
One thing I can tell you for sure is that it's going to feel very strange to start with. I got out a couple of years back with slightly less years than you working for one employer, and you just don't know what a big part of your life it is 'til it ain't there anymore. The big "Yes!" as you walk out the door (in my case, with a huge weight removed from my shoulders) is quickly followed by a "what next?" when you realise it's not a holiday you're taking this time - it's for good! But that's the secret - make sure it is for good - for your good.
I'm pretty sure you can cope with it if I can Roy -  lol Stay active - I'm not a golfer. but I can already see your handicap falling, and no doubt Dawn will find plenty of things to keep you occupied if you're around the home all the time  hmm
Hope she's prepared for more loud music around the place - and give a thought to the neighbors - turn it up even louder so they can share in your excellent taste  lol
Oh, and good luck with getting a position as a roadie with a young band - it's not like they are crying out for old farts like us - Joanne said she couldn't afford me anyway  lol

Enjoy it mate!

Re: The Next Step in Life…

I always thought the final day would be a blessing, it's not too far away Roy. But it's just a transition, and I know you will enjoy it. Rick is right, you just gotta stay involved in stuff. It's never too late to take up guitar, with or without lessons. maybe get one of those ZS7 cameras like Rick and Pete. and yeah, the best part is you have more time to check out other music, and to spend more time with us.

Best wishes in the coming years!!!

OK, and to spend a little more time talking about the Packers. but not a lot more. lol

Re: The Next Step in Life…

Thanks for the well wishes everyone! smile

It's funny, but yesterday while we were getting hit by a major snow storm, it actually felt kind of weird to be sitting here watching it instead of driving into work. Working for AT&T for all those years, it was expected that every employee needed to make it into work no matter what the circumstances were including weather. After all, Ma Bell doesn't close for the day. I guess I really timed my retirement just right considering it was really very bad yesterday, but it still seemed odd. I guess that feeling will go away with time. hmm

And Angela, don't worry about me pestering Dawn. Trust me, the LAW has already been laid down. "May I get you another cup of tea my grace?" wink

Thanks much Jon! Yes, I think now I have graduated into "OLD FART" territory.

And hey, I see you're already pushing the Cubbies. Just watch out for the Brewers this year Buddy, they've REALLY improved their pitching staff! wink
