Hey guys,
I was curious if the rubber soundhole cover that Joe uses on his acoustic actually makes a difference to the tone of the guitar? His main use for it is obviously preventing feedback but I was just wondering if it influences the sound at all.

I read in an old issue of Guitarist mag, that he puts towels inside the bodies so they are solid and the rubber hides the towels. It is no longer hollow so it sustains with no feedback issues. That was on his Yamaha's. This was about early 2008
I've used one of those Feedback Busters, as they were called. Didn't affect the sound too much but definitely cut the volume.

The rubber wafer feedback buster really takes away the resonance of the acoustics in my opinion. I didn't notice it until after it took it off once, and the guitar came alive.

Hmm..I personally like a nice, crisp acoustic sound without TOO much sustain and resonance that it gets messy when I run it through an amp with a load of reverb on it! I think the towel trick might just help me achieve this

True. His tech said the thing weighed a lot because it was stuffed with beach towels.

So the interview was with Joes guitar tech. He said basically that there are 2 beach towles in the yamah CXP acoustic and they do not use the new preamp but the older style piezio pickup because joe plays it at too high a volume to use the new style. It never said why he used 2 towels in the body but I think it is for weight of the instrument. Because it never said anything about the towles helping out on feedback or anything.

That's what I was thinking too...towels reduce resonance so the whole thing becomes less messy when run through an amplifier - I'll give it a shot tomorrow:)

That's the kind of sound I like - I don't know how to describe it but I like that he can hit the strings hard without it becoming muddy or messy

Maybe, I read that but I was in a hurry and didn't really read it. It makes sense if you really think about it, and thats what I orginally thought when I first wrote about it.
I just tried the towel trick and it works great! I've also just ordered a soundhole cover to hide them
stuffing it with towels coupled with hitting the strings near the bridge really makes the guitar sound a lot like Joe's!
