for get the sheild, forget the amp, for get the goldtop just let me have his signature hands. I bet he could make an old Kay acoustic guitar with a 1 inch action sound better then most folks could a real 59' Les Paul. Some people are just born with it I guess, others grow into it, and as for me will never have it.
$320!! Not sayin' it isn't worth it, but DIY projects are kinda fun.
$300 for a piece of plastic, i'll pass thanks.

Well you can use 2 different materials if you want to do this yourself. Plexi Glass, and Lexan. Plexi glass is what they call everything thats a baffle but a lot of people don't know about lexan. Plexi glass bends and then cracks or shatters. Its not very safe and will do the job fine so long as you don't damage it in traveling to a gig. Lexan is a different animal Lexan is very tough durable material and the thicker stuff is used at banks as bullet proof glass. A thin sheet of this stuff can easily cost $200 depending on the lenth and width. The thicker it is the more costly it gets. If you bought Lexan to do your baffles it would last you the rest of your life, and your grand kids life. If your using Plexi glass be careful not to bend it.

I made a 4 piece shield myself, complete with the fancy plastic living hinge in between the sheets of plexi and it was a major pain. I thought it would be fun and I AM proud of the job I did but from experience it's just worth it to buy one in my opinion. Making a cheap one with thin plexi and a piano style continuous hinge isn't so bad and can be effective. Cost is much lower too. -S
Having built the baffles myself for Joe for several years I can tell you that the materials cost nearly $400 if you use the Clear Sonic hinges. I think it is a bargain to get the custom shield for $300 because it is built using the new style hinge. I could never use that because a special groove channel had to be cut in the panels. I had to use the old hammer on style friction hinges. If you want Joe's baffle size this is the way to go in my opinion.
Not sure why the ClearSonic hinge is so special, but TAP Plastics sells their Flex-fold 2 hinge for ~$15 that lasts well over 2 million cycles.
I built a 1/4" thick 2-panel that is taller and wider than the ClearSonic for about $120. If I did it again, I'd buy the TAP hinge and be done constructing it in 30 minutes with less hassle and cost than a piano hinge. That said, if I were a company, I probably wouldn't sell something like Joe's for much less than ClearSonic is. Got major overhead to cover. DIY is almost always cheaper - no profit margin reqd.
I'm on the fence. Think I'll join the 100 watt club again first. Turned in my card in 2002 and I want it back!
I went to see Stoney Curtis in Vegas on Friday. "Baffles? I don't need no stinking baffles". Well he didn't actually say that but, he had the cases for his two strats and the firebird propped up against the amp head (he was using a miked Marshall half stack). It seemed to work for him. 
I left with my eardrums intact!
I do agree that the lexan baffles do have a cleaner look to them. But for the asking price, you're halfway to a Bonamassa Epiphone LP.
Got to remember that smaller companies have to make a profit and this is likely not going to sell like hotcakes, because a lot of guys just don't need baffles. Supply and demand driving the cost here and totally understandable. I think however JB has done such a great job as far as shedding the lbs, that if he marketed the JB diet plan, he would sell millions of units 
(total compliment on sticking to the program JB; I did the same in the past year, but mine was mostly due to reducing my bourbon consumption by about 90%).
Why not do like The Boss and have your Marshall stacks lay on their backs shooting straight up to the ceiling.
