Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

For now, I will say only what I said on Facebook regarding last night's show.....

My Mommy warned me about women like this.......and it's a darn good thing that for once, I didn't listen to my Mommy. wink

Our gang was first in line for the show....Rev Paul, Cathy and Dawn took one of the few table and chairs to the side of the stage. Bill, Jamie and I took our spots standing dead center, right next to the stage where for a good portion of the night, Grace stood right over us. Many pictures will follow.....Unfortuantley, the video police put a stop to my video taking while I was trying to record a second song, so I will upload their opener and part of another one. Sorry guys. However, more will follow....

One other thing, let me just say.......Oooohhhh La La La La Laaaa..... wink

No Vikki, I was a good boy and even had to close my eyes once or twice. wink  Especially when Grace and the two guitarists stepped over the front monitors and stood at the very edge of the stage within a foot or two of the three of us. Grace was actually straddling my beer and at that moment I said a quick little prayer that went something like this......"Lord, whatever you do, don't strike me blind for the next minute!" roll

Honestly, I didn't think it was possible to make a dress that short! cool  But the music, ahhhh the music, was phenomenal!! cool

I think I'm going in for a cardio checkout Roy. GPN for me in 3 weeks. Speaking of beers, Eric Gales grabbed mine to use as a slide last night, it was full and warm. He used a slide towel for the remainder of the tune, even after he shook it to drain and it spouted all over the stage.  lol  lol  lol (Ive got that on vid too!)

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

First, I want to make clear what an amazing show GPN put on and how much I thoroughly enjoyed their music.
Now that that's out of the way...
My daughter Jamie and I were lucky winners to a pre-show radio broadcast that took place from the Pabst Theater...roughly 100 people got to watch GPN play 3 acoustic numbers for a local radio station with brief interviews of Grace interspersed. We were seated on the floor, about 3 or 4 rows back from the small stage. The first thing that struck me when she came out was that the photos and videos that I have seen of Grace Potter do not do her justice. This is one beautiful woman, but she also seemed very down to earth during the interview portions. The 3:30PM broadcast lasted for about 25 minutes.
We met Roy, Dawn, Paul & Cathy for dinner and then arrived at Turner Hall a little before 6PM. We were first in line and when the doors opened at 7PM, we had our choice of seats or standing directly in front of the stage. Roy, Jamie and I opted for front and center, a decision that I will never regret. The opening band (Chamberlain) was very good and kept us entertained while waiting for the main event. GPN came on stage at around 9:45PM. During the first song, Grace crawled to the front of the stage on hands and knees (slinked may be a better description), literally about two feet in front of us, eye level, and oozing sensuality. The audience went crazy and yours truly was smitten.  I believe my heart re-started at about 10PM (GPN should travel with a defibrillator!).
The rest of the show was a very pleasant blur of music, lights and legs. Unlike Roy, nobody bothered me and my i-phone, so I have some great videos which I'll try to get posted soon.

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

wow, that sounds like a great preshow and show Bill. Between your's and Roy's details, RickB will probably need that cardio checkup. lol  crawling or standing over you, my heart's racing already just thinking about it. she will be here on 2/23 and I'm going to get us tickets ASAP, ain't missing that.

I see it takes a strong heart and constitution to survive a GPN gig from the related tales. I may survive because our seats are above stage level. DANG!

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Turner Hall Milwaukee, Wisconsin January 15, 2011...

What a Show!!

As Bill and I mentioned before, Jamie, Bill and I took up our standing positions dead center with Grace’s mic stand right in front of us. The opening band which was called “Chamberlin” where actually quite good. I didn’t get a chance to record any of their songs, but did take several pictures of them. Also, you can get a feel for their music from some videos that are posted on their site here: http://www.chamberlinband.com/info/

With the change between bands, you could feel the apprehension in the crowd for what we were about to see. Of course, the people gathered for the show were already on pins and needles because the Packers/Falcons game was well underway. And then, to the sounds of Queen’s “We Will Rock You”, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals took the stage. The crowd let loose a tremendous roar releasing some of their excitement all at once. And then, there she was, Grace Potter in the shortest, prettiest dress you can imagine, with high, high heeled platform shoes on strutting her stuff onto the stage. At first I thought Grace was maybe going “Commando” under the dress. That’s when I just about fainted thinking, how am I going to watch this show? Thank goodness though, Grace did have a garment on underneath her dress.

Their first song of the night was “Medicine” and I was fortunate enough to catch that song and their entrance onto the stage on video. My impressions of Grace and her band immediately reminded me of an early Tina Turner, where the rule of thumb for their shows was fantastic, high paced music played with reckless abandon and that is just what these fine people did for us. All of the guys were dressed in suit coats and had a feel of a very professional band. And Catherine “Cat” was dressed in a short skirt with black nylons. I ask you, is there anything sexier than a tall, thin, lovely looking women, finely dressed with high heel leather boots on while playing a fantastic bass? I think not! wink  Sorry BJJ. lol

The two men sharing guitar leads and rhythm were Scott Tournet and Benny Yurco and both are excellent guitarists who share backing vocals with bass player Catherine “Cat” Popper. Scott seems to be Grace’s right hand man and actually stands to her right. Benny is a wild man on stage and about the only times he’s not really rocking out is when he’s either playing acoustic guitar or singing backup. On drums is another great drummer by the name of Matt Burr. I never thought I’d see another drummer who could smile more than Bogie did, but Matt does. Wearing his sunglasses and pounding away on the drums, most of the time he has a very broad smile on his face and like the rest of the band, thoroughly enjoys what he is doing!

The show was really broken down into three sets even though, there was no break in the action. The opening part of the show featured the band playing many of their hits and rockin’ Turner Hall hard. Then came the shorter acoustic set with Grace, Scott and Benny playing together pretty much alone. This is when you could really appreciate Grace’s beautiful voice. She also shows more of her guitar skills on acoustic as compared to when she’s playing her Gibson Flying V in which she normally just plays power chords. However, Grace’s skills on organ are undeniable and she plays it like as if trying to rip the keys from their mounts. There was also one song during which Grace sang alone all by herself and accompanied only by her tambourine. I must say, that was simply beautiful.

After the acoustic set and with the announcement from Grace that the Packers had won their playoff game, it was time for the band and crowd to get down and dirty in their third set. Oh man, can you say sexuality was on display in the form of music? With each song the band took the crowd, now hot and sweaty, higher and higher. Of course, this was during the time they played “Paris” to the screams and shouts of the crowd. Sometime during the last few songs of the night, Grace sat down on the drum stand and removed her shoes. I then could see that Grace had no nylons on at all and that the perfection in her legs was all natural. Sorry people, but I am a leg man and I haven’t seen many gams like Grace’s in my life! wink In addition, one rather jubilant man wearing a Clay Mathews Green Bay Packer jersey jumped up on stage, removed his jersey and gave it to Grace. Grace in turn held it up to show everyone and then tied it to her mic stand. The jubilant man was then ushered topless off the stage. My hopes is that he had another shirt somewhere as it was a quite cold Wisconsin night this past Saturday. Apparently, there is some sort of friendship between Clay and Grace.

Grace actually posted the set list prior to the show via her Twitter account. Here’s that picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8384830@N04/5365696016/
That’s right, there were 18 songs and I really lost track of exactly how long they played. I would guess somewhere around 2 to 2 ½ hours of non-stop fun!

Here’s the two videos I was able to capture before the video police shut me down:

“Medicine” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrlIpvIz0sk

“Oasis” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg-w6LoaRhI

Sorry, they stopped me short of the ending of “Oasis”.

And the pictures from the night which I left in raw form. Yes, many of them are a bit blurry, but I think it shows the movement of this band and their high paced energy:

And of course, my favorite picture of Grace from the night: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8384830@N0 … 839695890/

Great review and vid/pix Roy. I CAN NOT WAIT! ( I love the way you slide the shot away when you thought the view would be XXXX!) Hey Amsterhammer, grab a flight, enjoy some summer like weather and I'll tell the wife to stay home and you and I can dig it together. We can hold each other up! tongue

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Roy,
I'm so glad you captured Medicine on video...I was so mesmerized when Gracie "hit the floor" directly in front of me, I was beginning to wonder if I had imagined it. Even recorded that moment jumped off the screen!
Lots of video of that show on youtube...here's another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMmfaAJ993A

I'll get the ones I took with my I-Phone up this weekend. They turned out pretty good considering the device I was using.

Thanks for the reviews Bill and Roy - having followed your buildup to the show via FB I had a feeling you'd have a special night. And boy does it sound special.

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Hey Bill, that's the same one "Medicine", but from someone else that must have just been behind us. wink

And George, I'd encourage you to do what Rick said and hop a flight to see this band. My goodness, with all the hype and comments that I had heard from everyone here and elsewhere, I had no idea what we were in for the other night. Even though we stood for a long period of time, the night passed so quickly for me because of the awesome show I witnessed. Truly not one to miss!

I don't know if I mentioned this before or not, but at one point Grace, Scott and Benny stepped over the front monitors and mics and came out to the very edge of the stage to play for us. Gosh, I could have simply bent over and kissed Grace's feet. And actually, I'm not sure she would have minded! wink

David, if she's ever over the Big Pond, then get to a show as soon as you can! smile

And Bill, funny that you mentioned being mesmerized. When you first talked about Grace slithering out right in front of us on her knees, I had no idea what you were talking about. After uploading the song "Medicine" I then watched it fully and realized you were right! Gosh, I guess I was so smitten with her being right in front of us, that I didn't realize she was on her knees. I better go take a quiet down pill now! wink

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Thanks for sharing these Roy.  What song did they do the "group" drum solo on?  I absolutely love that part.  Matt Burr is a great drummer.  Love his minimalist kit - you can actually see him at work.

I am going again in March to see these guys - David there are still tickets available!  (And Joe is playing the night before in Worcester).

Looking forward to your stuff Bill.

Oh my. Oh my oh my.  tongue

It's late, I need to head to bed and can't really do justice to what I want to say, so I'll add more tomorrow.

In short, big thanks to Roy and Bill for the reviews, pics and vids. I put on a seat belt before watching Medicine and yes Roy, your favorite pic is a stunner. I'm so pleased that you guys have confirmed for me that she really is as stunning as I thought in every way. Not sure what would have happened to me to find Grace on her knees right in front of me tongue

I'm hoping to catch her in DC in March with Cathy and Bob, if things turn out as I'd like.

I honestly think that the sky is the limit for this woman - to combine such beauty, raw sensuality AND musical talent is just too amazing!  It's so wonderful to see that I was not alone in the way I reacted to Grace, and that I'm not the only old guy to have been smitten cool
