Topic: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Drove down to Regensburg with Thomas yesterday evening to see Wishbone Ash for the first time ever - and I think they just made a new fan. smile

David Gogo opened up for them and boy, he ripped the roof off that place ... funny enough we talked about opening acts before the show and agreed that they can be annoying at times (when you already stood for 2 hours to get to the best spot in front of the stage and they play for hours and hours ....). Well, I think David Gogo came to proove HOW good opening acts can be. I would have watched a full show even if Wishbone Ash played another 3 hours after that ... wink David mostly played his own material (a lot of stuff from his new album called "Vibe"), which was what I´d call "classical Blues rock" - with emphasis on ROCK. His slide-playing was awesome and of course he did the good old beer bottle trick too... his last song was the wildest version of "Hoochie Coochie Man" I´ve ever heard - at first I thought: "Why do they always have to play these songs that have been done so often and can´t be played any better anyway?!", but well - I was wrong again. If you´ve got the chance to see this guy, go see him - he rocks and seems to be a very nice guy too.

Then - Wishbone Ash: they started off with some "laid back" rock music, or as Andy Powell said: "Nice and easy, folks..." - I liked that a lot, but first thought they´d sound a bit too "clean" for me ... that surely changed after they had played a few songs and started playing all those long "jam-songs" with the famous sound of the two lead guitars. Andy played his Flying V (I think a guy from England builds them) and Muddy Manninen used the good old LP - Marshall combination for most of the gig. Thomas told me that someone had stolen nearly all their guitars one night before their show in Nürnberg two weeks ago ... a musician´s nightmare ...
Well, these two guys really know how to play guitar and they had their best moments when trading licks during the instrumental jam parts ... together they had the perfect mixture of epic rock sound and some soulful bluesy tunes.
I don´t remeber the whole setlist, but I believe they played a lot of songs of the Argus album, which has been re-recorded live in 2008 - I bought the CD after the show and it´s really great. As I said in the beginning: I think these guys made a new fan. smile

I also ended up buying David Gogo´s album, but haven´t listened yet how he sounds like on a studio album ... more about that later.

P.S.: Side note on Wishbone Ash fans - believe it or not, these folks might be even crazier than us! Thomas and I met up with a woman from Stuttgart (whom I already knew from various other Blues rock shows - I try to convince her each and every time that Joe is NOT an arrogant a**, which she seems to believe) and she had seen the last 7 (!) shows of this Germany tour. David Gogo offered to talk to Andy for her and get her a discount - "buy 6 Wishbone Ash tickets, get one for free" ... lol

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Hi Eva, glad you enjoyed the show. I will be at Fabrik in Hamburg on Monday for the same bill. I wrote on the forum before about David Gogo. I was one of the people who said "why do Ash need a support band?" and then he simply blew me away. I made a point of seeing him again a couple of times. He's a great musician and a lovely bloke to talk to. I'm really looking forward to meeting him again on Monday.

As for W. Ash, I find they just get better with age. Muddy is THE best second guitarist they've had for a long time and his playing and tone is just superb. Key to Ash is the guitar interplay of course, and Andy and Muddy really 'fit' together. Importantly, as well as playing lots of older material (with such a massive back catalogue - you would have to!), they are still recording new material and as such are still relevant today and not just a heritage act.

The former bassist from the original line up, Martin Turner, has his own version of Wishbone Ash on the road but I wouldn't cross that road to see them. Andy Powell has kept the band, the name and the spirit of the music alive. ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTE!

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Eva and Thomas,

great you both liked the show so much. I've always liked W.A. very much. Still do, when they are around I always go, always worth the money.
First time I saw them must be more than 30 years ago.bought their first 3 Lp's then.

I agree: If they are around; GO!!!

P.S. Just saw the German weatherforecast, how much snow you have overthere!!:D. First smiley from my daughter Laura!!!

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

thanx for your the big review eva and i am glad that you enjoyed the show as much as i did. as a big wishbone fan who has seen them many many times over the years i can add that they were really on fire yesterday, the very small venue was  packed and the sound was perfect.
even if there was nothing new in the setlist compared to nürnberg it was another concert and it seamed that the band enjoyed it as much as the audience.
its allways great to see that band, `cause its really a band, a together were nobody shines brighter than the other one. ok, andy powell got that right, but everybody else has enough space in there and so it makes a whole round thing out of it (hope you understand what i mean).
i like JB a lot, but that is one case were maybe he should/could work on. not a critic, just my opinion.
and yes david gogo is one of the best supporters i have seen the last years. i said he was ok last year, but yesterday that was damn good what he played, so we had 1,5 good concerts for our money.
andre, here in nürnberg there is not so much snow, its snowing from time to time, but not this much........................ i am thick of it..................waiting for spring and sun.
hansamike enjoy the show....................a good start in the week. i have been to the fabrik when the dvd was recorded there. very nice venue..
nice weekend everybody
Thomas

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Yep Wishbone Ash are a class act. I will be seeing them for the third time on the 2nd May at Pacific Road in Birkenhead, then I'm going to Dingwalls on the 3rd and some other place in London on the 4th. where, who, **##, can't remember, I'm sure it will come to me by then though. Think I'm losing my faculties!

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Here's some pics from the last time they played at Pacific Road in Birkenhead. They always put on a splendid show and the dueting guitars are just superb. The whole band are excellent musicians.

Sadly it looks like the venue is to be closed by the council, unless they can find someone to take it over. I don't think they are putting too much effort into finding someone to run it now that the council have opened an all seater theatre in New Brighton, which is OK for shows but not ideal for concerts of this type - only 800 capacity too!

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Nice review Eva! I'm pretty sure I saw Wishbone Ash way back in the day, maybe around the early 70s. Gosh, that seems like a lifetime ago now.....

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

Yes Eva - nice review - I too saw the David Gogo power trio play at the Jolly Farmers pub in Purley, South London on 12th November 2008 and was also blown away by them - they were fantastic - I put a review on the Aynsley Lister forum - with regard to Vibe, I prefer the more rocky album, Halfway to Memphis, which includes the superb swampy blues shuffle Soul Fever, a great groove for sure!!!

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

David Gogo will be on tour in Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium.
Tour start is in Germany on 14th January.

I'll be in Schwarzer Adler, Rheinberg on January 20.
Anybody there?

Actually, I'm not starting with Wishbone Ash but a David Gogo solo concert.
As I haven't seen David Gogo before I'm looking forward to that.

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

I got my ticket for the Quasimodo in Berlin on 14th January.
Since I have seen him in the Fabrik in Hamburg two years ago I'm waiting to see him again!!!
Hope there will be no problem with the weather . . .

Re: David Gogo/Wisbone Ash

I'll be seeing him at least once in Holland. David not only puts on a great show, he's also a very nice and fun guy to talk to (where have we heard that before?  tongue  )

RIP Iron Man
