Re: Very Disappointed with the Beano Les Paul Replica

Your right in that they do make a very strong tie in to the Beano burst. No where, to their credit do they proclaim it is an exact replica. As far as the pups are concerned it is my understanding DiMarzio has trademarked the double white exposed bobbins so Gibsons hands are tied there. YMMV

From Gibson
That is the exalted side of the "Beano Burst" legend. The tragic side of the tale is that this groundbreaking instrument was stolen from the artist later in 1966, while Clapton was rehearsing with Cream for the band's first tour, and was never recovered. Now, for the first time ever, Gibson Custom and Eric Clapton have teamed up to revisit one of the most legendary Les Paul Standards, a guitar produced in honor of an iconic instrument lost to the public eye for nearly 45 years.

and

In short, this is the closest we will ever come to recovering this long-lost rock legend, a cornerstone of blues-rock history

The Gibson Custom Shop Eric Clapton 1960 Les Paul has been created with the close personal cooperation of the artist, and with painstaking reference to available photographs. Clearly there are special challenges in creating a guitar based on one that no longer exists, but this strictly Limited Edition instrument accurately represents what Eric Clapton personally feels his 1960 Les Paul should be. Every component in the build—including grain pattern and finish color, neck profile and feel, pickups, and more—has been personally approved by Clapton through several iterations from Gibson Custom so that, ultimately, this guitar comes as close as possible to recreating the hallowed '60 Burst as it exists today in the mind of this legendary artist.

Re: Very Disappointed with the Beano Les Paul Replica

roll Maybe they should have asked Dimarzio to build the pickup then.

Maybe so but I must say they did a great job with the ones in there thats for sure! Also if we are gonna split hairs Gibson released the real Beano with p/u covers EC took em off.

Re: Very Disappointed with the Beano Les Paul Replica

You got me there.  He did.  He was quoted to say that "Taking the covers off opens up the sound and makes the pickups scream."  I wonder why he never did that with any other les paul?  This is a theroy of mine about this guitar but I think he might have put the covers back on before it was stolen.  There is a color Video of Cream playing "I Feel Free" Clapton has a fro going on and is playing a les paul.  It has covers, no pickguard, and no toggle ring.  I always wondered if he was tinkering around with that guitar and that was the latest look that he had for it.  We'll never know, but I think it would be cool if thats why he chose to have the cover on the pickups.   And like I said I am sure this guitar plays great and like all gibsons they might all look different.  I just felt let down with the ones I've seen so far.  They just don't look as good as the one in the picture.  It like I said looks too much like my Old Les Paul Classic.  At least I don't see a $4000 price difference.
Its long gone now but here it was after I swapped the pickups out.

i am not positive, but i believe the LP he was using in Cream that you cited was a borrowed LP - so whatever confirguration it was in may not have been a result of Clapton's own desire.

you know, with this whole issue of the double whites...i like jimmy page's response to the whole thing.  They had the same issue with Page's recently released #2 replica, which had exposed double whites in the bridge.  Gibson talked to Jimmy about it and brought up the notion of working out a deal with the Dimarzio - and he said screw him, no.  he didnt want to give him the satisfaction.

i wholly agree with this attitude.  the idiot has got a trademark for exposed double white bobbins and wants to hold something like a limited edition model hostage for use of a particular colored bobbin - regardless if the pickup is actually made by him or not?

give me a break  roll

Re: Very Disappointed with the Beano Les Paul Replica

I've never cared for DiMarzio for that reason and the fact that I think they make mostly metal style pickups.  Seymour Duncan is a honest guy and started the after market bussiness.  I'll stick with the humble guy every time.
