Topic: Venue closures still happening

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/de … -luminaire

After the promises made after the Half Moon Putney, London was saved from closure over a year ago, it seems nothing has changed from Government policy.

Crying shame as I , like some other I know prefer the smaller venues to see up & coming talent get their breaks and earn their live experiences.

I wonder how many more venues will cease to have live music this coming year.

Is this problem just consigned to the UK or is it a worldwide thing?  Let me know cos I am Bloody angry

Re: Venue closures still happening

Well Roger,
I just found out yesterday that TWO venues in Dallas, Texas were closing!
Pearl and Take 482.

Take 482 had their last show Dec. 30.

Pearl's demise will be next week.
Jason Elmore is playing his last gig this Wednesday and Jim Suhler is hosting this Thursday, the last show for the DFW Blues Society Jam.

I am not happy! sad

Re: Venue closures still happening

The Sand Dollar in Las Vegas went from being a Rock & Blues venue to a "Tiki Bar". That's how Stoney Curtis described it on FB. He was pretty distraught. At least I got to see him perform there last year. I also heard that Cozy's in Sherman Oaks CA ditched blues and went to some other format. A friggin shame.

Re: Venue closures still happening

I'm still in mourning over the closure of Konocti Harbor Resort in Clearlake, NorCal. They closed their doors a year ago Nov. and no plans to re-open what so ever. The best Lynyrd Skynyrd shows I ever saw took place up there.

                                                                                                                          RIP Konocti,

P.S. Konocti is a Native American term meaning LETS PARTY!!!!!!

What is success? Is it do yo' own thang, or is it to join the rest?   -Allen Toussaint

Re: Venue closures still happening

thanks for all the relating posts, it is extremely worrying that these economic times are hitting even our entertainment. Makes me even more determined to shun the 'corporate' venues this year and make my stance on going to the smaller ones to give them my support. Music is everyones heritage not just there for big business to play with.
There is some wonderful young talent out there that need our help & support .I will do my bit  big_smile

Re: Venue closures still happening

You see it over here as well with corporate outfits like HOB using a formula to mass market music like fast food. I don't think a small place can make it on bar profits alone.  neutral

Re: Venue closures still happening

There#s a possibility we could be losing Pacific Road in Birkenhead, just over the River Mersey from Liverpool, if the local council have anything to do with it.

Re: Venue closures still happening

During times of recession, you can expect more closures.... in all walks of business .... we may not like it but....!  We could go deeper into the why's and therefores, but politics would have to be mentioned at some point, but we can't go down that road here!  hmm
