Topic: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

Hi,

I'm looking for a 2 x 12 cabs. So far I've heard great things about THD. Any views on Marshall 1936? Any other cabs? I'm looking for a clear and open sound with tight bottom. More sweet distortion than chainsaw raw if you get my point. I've been looking in several stores in my town, but very few have cabs in stock.

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

You'll pay easily over double for a THD...but you get so much more sound!

Orange...they're nice...pretty big and heavy though.

You could try an Engl with some Greenbacks or something...

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

I've read that the newer 1936 cabs don't sound nice.
Check Avatar, or Category 5.
Iam in the process of building my own, from pine.

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

What amp are you using as this may have a bearing on what speakers you

end up with ? But if you want a good all rounder try to get a second hand

JCM2000 TSLC212  I got one and they are openback, with a V30 and G12H30

which is a good combination for most amps . although I ended swapping the speakers out for EVM12LS,

I find CABS Loaded with G12-75Ts to be harsher BUT G12-65s are nice

Geezer Sound Company.  Dave makes awesome quality and sounding cabs at a very competitive price.  Dave offered me a couple of cabs to use for a recent Springsteen gig.  Both 2 x 12's.  One loaded with G12-65'ss and the other with Vintage 30's.  Both cabs sounded huge for 2 x 12's.  His design uses a little more depth in the cab which surprisedly made a huge impact in sound.  I liked them so much I bought the G12-65 cab  off of him.

I will use it either with my Reeves Custom 50 or Marshall JVM410. Depends on the job.

I use one of these : http://www.blackstaramps.co.uk/products … an212.html and love it. It's miles better than the Marshall 1936 I used to have.

2 x Celestion Vintage 30's and it roars like a lion.

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

I have 2 1936 cabs and they are fine, but the speakers aren't very smooth sounding so I changed them.  I did this because I had 4 other celestions, but otherwise I'd have probably bought different cabinets.  Looking back I think I would have rather had some made by mojo or one of those "custom" builders with the exact speakers I wanted and you can also pick between some different styles depending on who makes them..  They aren't necessarily more expensive, unless you want them to be.  The only downside is the time it takes to actually make them.  I'd just pay the money and have them made and loaded as well to avoid the hassle of putting speakers in.  Not that it's a hard job, but it's nice to just have it done and ready to rock out of the box.

Here is a video I found a while ago showcasing different speakers, pretty interesting if you're pondering over what to buy.  -Seth

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

I had an 1936 for years and I never loved it, it was OK. My biggest problem with it was I could never quite hear it because the sound was always coming at my knees. I upgraded to a 4x12 only because of the slant. If I could fined another 2x12 that is a slant cab then I would go that route. Honestly the 4x12 isn't really much bigger than the 1936.

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

only about 10-12 inches taller I believe.

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

THD's are great, if you can afford them, BUY THEM by all means.

I don't know what amp you're going to use with this but this marshall cab is great too:

good luck !

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

I have a DR Z 2x12 that is a very good cabinet.  I bought it because I got a great buy ($300) and it sounded better than my Avatar 2x12 when I ran them side by side.  It is tighter and a little smoother than the Avatar.  Both have a Celestion V30 and a G12H in them.  But, the cabinets I still prefer are the Marshall 1965A(slant) or 1965B(straight) 4x10 cabinets.  They love old Fenders heads and good Marshall heads.

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

Thank you all so much for your help! This forum is truly wonderful and full of lovely people with great knowledge. I've got a 25 % discount on a THD 2x12 cab, so I've decided to order one. Stereo - here I come! The video showing different speakers was very interesting (the youtube-link posted by helrazr84).

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

Cool! When is supposed to come?

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

I guess it takes a few days. They have it in stock, but it has to be shipped. I'll report back and maybe I put some mic's in front of my cab's (including my doppolas) and post a little demo of my rig. Some of you guys have asked for it, so why not....

Re: Any 2 x 12 cab recommendations?

I'll be very interested to hear what you think of it...nothing but good things I expect!  wink

There is a company that makes cabs to your specs or from ones they produce. Everything is
Made in the USA and you are putting Americans to work.  I will be ordering the "Slant" convertible
cab (extra 25 dollar charge for "convertible")  and it will be 271.80 for the cab,
and I can put some 100 dollar greenbacks in it, or a tonker and a swamp thang.
I may put a port tube in for 5 bucks extra, but
im not sure yet.   LOPOline Speaker Cab company.
