Topic: Covers - how less can be more - ROX - Crazy

Saw a different version of this on German TV the other night, and was very impressed.

It something Joe has always done so well. Taking an original and developing a different dimension.

This is stripped back and yet is so much the better for it. Great vocal and lovely keys.

WOW! I've never heard the original version, but I'd buy that perfomance on CD in a heartbeat.

Re: Covers - how less can be more - ROX - Crazy

Yes, sorry I didn't say, of course the original was SEAL which in itself was a great song, but ROX, well she really owns it now.

That is stunning.  I've always liked the original version but this is just beautiful.

Dave,
enjoyed the link, thanks. I don't think you can learn vocal phrasing like that. You just have have it in you. It's just so different and yet for her effortlessly natural. Very relaxing

This whole "less is more" theme instantly put me in mind of Damien Rice, especially back when he was with the angelic Lisa Hannigan... anyone here familiar with him (or her)?  These are originals, not covers, but here are 3 of my favorites that demonstrate the point nicely... I can lose myself in the emotion of these songs......

Re: Covers - how less can be more - ROX - Crazy

Thanks Mike for the vid.  I'm a big fan of Seal and that girl indeed made it her own.  The less is more is very attractive to my ears, gives a song that living room atmosphere.  I've gotta listen to it in small doses though and it takes talent to perform that way.  As for covers, they've always been a fascination of mine and there's nothing better than a newer interpretation breathing life into a classic song.

Re: Covers - how less can be more - ROX - Crazy

Thank you to Curby for bringing this one up in another thread... a slowed and stripped-down cover of Tears For Fears' 1982 song "Mad World" was recorded by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews for the soundtrack of the 2001 movie Donnie Darko (cool movie!).  Some have criticized them for turning it into a "funeral dirge", but personally I LOVE it!  I've been known to listen to it repeatedly and it gives me chills every time.  In my opinion, it's a definite improvement over the faster, poppy, synthesized original, which I don't think properly matched the nature and mood of the lyrics, especially the chorus.

Here's the live performance Curby posted:

Here's the original official video for the cover, which is pretty cool:

And here's the original 1982 Tears For Fears version, for those who don't quite recognize it yet or need a refresher.  Apparently the original official music video isn't allowed to exist on YouTube, but here's the audio anyway.  I can't believe how many people are loyal to this version:

Supposedly Sting, who wrote "Fields of Gold", wept listening to Eva Cassidy's version of his song.  Just Eva and her guitar recorded live.

Fantastic! I love the original song, and it's amazing to hear the song performed with such simplicity, yet so full. The goosebumps I got tells it all....

Thanks for posting this song:-)

Sorry to derail the thread (although I think this treatment clearly qualifies as "less is more") but speaking of weeping over Eva Cassidy...this one gets me every time.  Such an amazing voice and such a shame we lost her to cancer 14 years ago.   I grew up in the DC area but had never heard of her until about 2 years ago, when my singer turned me on to her.

Carl,
I could have sworn you were going with another song, but her version of "Autumn Leaves" is very powerful.  I firmly believe God places Angels among us and Eva Cassidy had to be one.
About ten years ago while making my daily commute through southern Illinois, I was listening to a song on the radio and suddenly realized I was crying and pulled off the road.  There was an urgency to really listen to the song without distraction.  2001 was the year both my parent's health started going downhill and the responsibility strained my nerves.  I must have listened to this song scores of times on TV and radio with my Mother, but not until I heard Eva's version did I get the true meaning of the song.  When I got home I went right out and bought the album and played it for my Mom.  She cried all through the song and afterward told me Eva Cassidy sang like an Angel.  This was the last song I played at her Funeral.
This version has since been copied by many aspiring artists, but not anywhere close to Eva's.

Curby, these are even more powerful when coupled with the knowledge she had of her limited time to perform. Songs from the soul of a beautiful person.

Beautiful, Curby....but in keeping with the thread:  Eva and acoustic guitar, Blues Alley, Washington, DC (same gig as the Autumn Leaves version)....live and without pitch correction/overdubs/retakes/etc.
