Re: Robben Ford

Hi Ges,
Long time, no talk.  I only discovered Robben Ford about six years ago, but I realized I'd actually heard him in the 70's on Tom Scott & the LA Express and Joni Mitchell albums.  Also, he toured with George Harrison on the Dark Horse tour.  And I believe Joe and Robben Ford both played at Leo Fender's birthday party a while back, Joe is a fan as well.  I've only seen Robben once, he's excellent, but doesn't tour the east coast that much.

Re: Robben Ford

Funny, this thread was right under the Shuggie Otis thread. No doubt Robben & Shuggie have crossed paths being from the same general NorCal area. You can hear Robben's take on Shuggie's Me & My Woman on Robbens CD Keep On Runnin'. Both players do it justice.

Re: Robben Ford

It would be a good question to put to Robben J Dawg. Was Shuggie an early influence? I can see a possible reason why he faded away. His compositions were too esoteric for the times to sell well and his label probably was pressuring him to do different stuff, as has happened so often to many others.

Re: Robben Ford

I doubt that Shuggie was an influence on Robben who is 2 years older, but more like they'd have a mutual respect for each other. Robbens originally from Ukiah about an hour up the road from Sebastopol where Shuggie's livin' these days. Robben & his brothers played the Sonoma & Mendocino area as well as the Bay Area for a long time and still do, even though Robben resides in Ojai nowadays.

Re: Robben Ford

Thanks for the info J Dawg. You are a repository of a ton of Central Cali info. Their paths may well have crossed in those days since they were contemporaries.

Robben has been around quite a while, played with a host of great musicians, and the body of work is amazing. It's a little late in the game to be calling him a primadonna. Bonnie Raitt won't tolerate a bunch of smoke being blown at her on stage either, I smoke but bravo for her. Turn the flashes off and let the man play. seems like a small request.

Re: Robben Ford

Robben Ford is one of the few artists that I'll buy everything he does. My cousin played me Talk to your Daughter in 88 and been a fan ever since. I had seen him with Joni Mitchell on the Court and Spark tour but had no idea who he was.

Robben is a different cat. The camera thing is over the top. His willingness to let that affect a show or an experience. To me he is his own worst enemy when it comes to that. He very seldom tours anywhere other than the west coast or Europe. Its tough being a fan of his.

I have seen him only a couple of times but they were special shows.
