Re: Favorite Beer

Hey Jane!  I bought a kit a couple summers ago.  It was basically two 5-gallon pails with some tubing and stuff.  Nothing too elaborate.  The ingredients came all prepackaged with everything there and that ran about $15.  I just followed the instructions and let it go to town.  I really didn't have much time or know what I was doing.  Luckily I got something that didn't taste horrible, although not my particular taste.  I think the main reason I wanted to do it was because I was 20 and couldn't buy beer yet, so I figured making it would be a good alternative wink...Good experience, but this summer I'd really like to put a bit more effort and research into it and make something I enjoy.  I also saw the thing about the Sam Adams contest, but I'd have to come up with a recipe and test/tweak it, so I'll get on that and have it set for next years contest.  Anyways, there's a bottle of beer (homemade or store-bought) for anyone here if they're travelling through Potsdam, NY!

Cheers,
-Ben

Re: Favorite Beer

We were visiting friends in New Hampshire a couple of weeks ago that live not far from a huge Anheuser Busch processing plant that gives tours.  Absolutely fascinating...the whole process and all the ingredients.  The end of the tour lands you in a taste testing bar.  Anheuser is most popular for Budweiser, but they have lots of products including these malt drinks that are fruit flavored.  They also make a dark beer, sweeter than Guinnes (hubby's fav) that many of the distributors never picked up, so you can't get it everywhere.  They have stables on the grounds for some of the beautiful Clydesdales, which have their own touring schedule and travel around to different events.  The commercials with the beautiful snow backgrounds and horse drawn carriages are mainly filmed in Colorado.

Re: Favorite Beer

I tried the Brewer's Best my first time, but the temperature fluctuated so much during the fermentation period that it's no wonder I didn't get what I had intended.  It's time for me to start saving up my Sam Adams bottles so I can reuse them.  How was the wine making, Jane?  I think that sounds like a pretty good idea, but I'd like to do it by crushing my own grapes and everything.  It's just fun to do things from scratch.  I was talking to a guy last week about germinating wheat and cracking it and everything involved in taking wheat from a seed form to a malt.  He said it's pretty labor intensive when you can just buy the malt concentrate, but I'd like to try it at least once to see what it's really like.  Wow, I think I could use a beer now!

Re: Favorite Beer

My all time favorites are made by Mendocino Brewing Co. in Ukiah, Ca. The best way to enjoy them is in their original brew pub in Hopland, Ca. on tap just down the road from the new production brewery. The Flagship brew is Red Tail Ale, but the one that will really do you in is Eye Of The Hawk a double bock monster with a content of about 8.5%. When they brewed it at the old pub each batch varied between 9-11% and if you downed 3 or more the bartender would ask for your keys. Sierra Nevada rocks too, Chico's finest. I like the the Sam Adams stuff too. It usually depends on which one's on special @ Safeway that week. However at all Southern Rock shows it's Jack!!!!

Ok, here's one most have not heard of. How about Spotted Cow brewed by the the New Glarus Brewing Company? They have an assortment of other favorites such as: Coffee Stout, Fat Squirel and Totally Naked. All are excellent beers brewed with some of the finest ingredients. For more info:  http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/beers.html

For regular drinks I make the best Bloody Mary's this side of the Mississippi. I use Svedka vodka, Frank's hot sauce, worcestershire, olives, lemon slice, celery salt and V-8 juice. You can add just a little horseradish to liven things up even more.

Hey Roy,
I'm familiar with New Glarus. They sell it locally. I've tried a couple of their brews, but I can't recall which ones. I'll keep an eye out for the Spotted Cow.

Your Bloody Mary miix sounds delicious! The horseradish is one of the keys to a great Bloody Mary.

Re: Favorite Beer

Stone Cellar (Adler Brau, Appleton Brewing Company) makes a root beer flavored beer that I think is excellent, but I cannot recall the name of it.

My wife doesn't like beer either but doesn't mind to taste a Brooklyn Chocolate Stout.  I had one last night, tasty indeed...  It only comes out in the winter, December I believe.  It's a high gravity beer too...
