Re: Top releases for 2010

Rick, the band is still called Honeytribe, the bass player is still George Potsos, but there´s a new drummer (Gabriel Strange) whom I didn´t see in August 2009. On the new album you find Huey Lewis and a sax player as additional musicians.

That sax player is Ron Holloway, formerly with Dizzy Gillespie's band and session guest for other members of the ABB family (Warren Haynes and Susan Tedeschi).  His playing is really tasty on this album and adds meat to the sound.  The younger Allman doesn't have his Dad's pipes, but is a darn good singer in his own right and I really like the way he plays guitar.  Probably the thing that separates this album from most are the great songs.  The Stevie Wonder cover ("Sir Duke") fizzles, but all the rest are strong compositions.

Another post of Curby would make 10.
Have a look at post No 5.

Woops, I missed it! smile Some good lists in there. smile I think I'll order the JJ Grey album now...

Yes, that's what I did, too.

6. Devon Allman: Space Age Blues
Like Scott Mckeon and Simon McBride, this album's a huge leap in substance from earlier efforts.

Yes, you are right, Curby. It´s so much better than Torch. I´ve seen him three times live meanwhile, and I was always hoping that his new album would correspond to the quality of his shows. and it does, indeed.

Was this done with Honeytribe? We heard them live last year and they laid down a tasty set. I'm going to have to check that out.

I'm really glad to see all you digging Devon Allman & Honeytribe, and their (finally) newer album, they are truly underrated.  Those 3 can go head to head with Joe's last trio.  George is just a mondo bass musician.  Fantastic deep tone.  What Gabriel lacks in finesse he makes up in physical delivery.  Devon serves unquestionably good singing & playing, consistently.  He is the real deal.  They headed back to Ardent Studios-Joe's recorded there, even recorded Mercy, Mercy with Honeytribe there also and came up with my prescription Space Age Blues.  Güenter sent me a photo from the after show chill period with the guys and ourselves together, signed and with Devon's NASA infatuation certified by a picture of a "Rocket" for me...a special treat and thanks again Güenter (also E & L & S & D & Devon, good times).  This one's one of my picks for 2010.

Rock ON & Keep the Faith,

Güenter, when they took the stage at our show, I yelled Hey Gabe but never got out "riel" because that was who I expected...  He'd drummed for them before.  I'd seen him before.

Re: Top releases for 2010

I'll put that list right alongside the top singer list in another thread. Buddy Guy #14? Who gets to choose the airplay? Not many radio stations that run roots blues though... Out here we have one guy for 4 hours a week on the local college station. He does play a lot of Buddy though.

As for the 25 best Blues Album list......A list without Bonamassa is like a day without sunshine....It's like that list has the blues....

Re: Top releases for 2010

I usually don't buy many new albums because I've got so much catching-up to do with older albums. But here are three albums from 2010 that I like a lot:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Live! In Chicago A very energetic album. Lots of great guitar work.

Moreland & Arbuckle - Flood Their song "Legend Of John Henry" (not a cover of Joe's great TBOJH) has a rhythm that really makes me wanna pee... wink But the other 12 song are also great.

Claude Hay - Deep Fried Satisfied A speed-delta-blues-rap cover of "We Will Rock You"? - strange but fantastic. And he's really doing that all on his own...

Here are my favorite "older" albums that I bought this year:

Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam - Live From Bonnaroo The CD was/is out of sale, but then I discovered a website where I could buy an mp3 download. smile The album doesn't have the perfect sound of Joe's LFNIP, but you feel the enthusiasm and the energy of the crowd and the band and the songs keep blowing me away!

Marcus Bonfanti - Hard Times I bought the older album first. I love Markus Bonfantis "simple" (in a positive sense) approach to his music.

Paul Rodgers - Muddy Water Blues - A Tribute To Muddy Waters Heard about it here on the forum, checked it out, bought it + love it. Favorite song: "Standing Around Crying" with David Gilmore.

Liquid Groove Mojo - Cradle to the Grave Lots of southern blues feeling.

Carolyn Wonderland - Miss Understood She played at the Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland where Joe played, too. Could pass as Janis Joplins daughter. wink

Beth Hart - 37 Days Joe's support act in Lucerne. This Lady rocks!

It was on this forum that I heard of some of the above mentioned albums for the first time. So thanks to all of you. And keep on posting. smile

Re: Top releases for 2010

My favorite releases of the year (off the top of my head):

Black Rock - J.B.
Black Country Communion - BCC
Fuzz Universe - Paul Gilbert
Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards - Joe Satriani

Re: Top releases for 2010

I think I need to toss in this release as well.  From last January Hall & Oates' Live at the Troubadour is the best live album of 2010 in my book.  The live versions on this album have an earthiness that betters their original studio recordings.  Fans should check out Daryl's home recordings (Live At Daryl's House).
