No order except #1, too many I love. There might be some surprises here.

Sondra Radvanovsky/Verdi Arias. I love opera, especially Verdi, and this emerging star's voice made my hair stand up and tears well. Timbre, range, power and emotion with total control. Stunning!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eNvAFXz7WY

Joe Bonamassa/Black Rock. Why I'm here.  smile

Burhan and McMurray/Walled Gardens. Violin and Guitar. Rock meets the classics. edit(Sorry, I missed that it is not this year so I DQ it, new to me. But check it out.)

Black Country Communion/Self titled. I loved them in Riverside, the release was even better.

Brooklyn River/Dominant Curve. Chamber music from left field, hauntingly beautiful and oh so different.

I'll throw in Jeff Beck/Emotion and Commotion to replace the DQ. Love his take on new ways to make the guitar sing. Great guest vocalists too. And it has an opera aria!

Hehe,  wink I grew up with classical music. A long hair of the older variety.  big_smile
Rick
edit to toss in the video link 'cause most of ya are saying Huh?? lol . To say she sings like an angel is an understatement. The voice of a generation IMHO. I've heard Callas and Price. A rare, true Spinto Soprano with a 3 octave range to high C who is knocking the socks off the toughest critics. Grab a hanky girls, you're going to cry. (and she's a nice gal from the midwest. no diva)

Since we get a few more, I'll quote to add them.

Coco Montoya/I Want It All Back. A West Coaster from way back, Coco and his band lay down a mix of smooth grooves and funk that I love. Hammond B3, Keb Mo adding vocals and tight rythm section. A wall of sound that moves ya.

Govt. Mule/Mulennium. Me too.

Neil Young/Le Noise. Not everyone's cup, but as an old line fan, if you listen hard, the genius prevails.

Re: Top releases for 2010

Ok, some good suggestions here, when I consider top releases of the year, I think it's important to take an open mind to artists you've not heard or not been that keen on in the past rather than simply past favourites.

1. A case in point was Philip Sayce. I'd not been blown away by Peace Machine, but Innerevolution came over as very fresh and a release of exceptional high quality. His impressive guitar work was slightly reigned in to focus on a song focussed album. From the powerful and dynamic Changes to the psychedelic blues of Little Miss America, this album is diverse guitar led rock, funk and blues, with Sayce's vocals as impressive as his guitar playing.

2. Simon McBride had caught my ear with his debut Rich Man Falling, yet he has surpassed this with Since Then, which is one of those albums you can hear once and love. The key elements from his first album are retained, yet the strength of song writing has developed, its more rootsy, blues rock par excellence as Classic Rock magazine wrote.

3. It's been out since end of last year in Germany, but Henrik Freischlader Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer is an exceptional album, some albums can facde after time, but the quality of the song writing, the vocals and musicianship all by one man on this CD is very hard to beat.

With three blues rock releases already listed, there is no place on my list for BlackRock (nor BCC) which I have to say in my view does not reach the same heights.

4. A superb release from the last year is Todd Sharpeville's Porchlight. It's a collection of self composed contemporary modern electic blues, with personal and political themes, great musicianship (including guests  Duke Robillard, Joe Louis Walker & Kim Wilson) and very convincing vocals from a somewhat upperclass Brit.

5. A change of pace with Sean Taylor's Walk With Me. This is a gem of an album of primarily acoustic folk/blues.  It's a really stripped down release of atmospheric tracks which is worthy of great attention.  Reminicent at times of John Martyn.

I'd also give honoury mentions to the so far unmentioned WT Feaster Band, 24 Pesos, Marcus Bonfanti and Dani Wilde.

Rock On and Keep the Faith

Re: Top releases for 2010

After consulting my iTunes library, these are my 5 favourites so far:

M.O.C.T. - Look at the Time
Debut album of a Dutch band. One of the band members is "Big Pete" van der Pluym, a great harp player and a guy with a voice.
That's blues with a funky note. YEAH - I like it. See you guys hopefully next year.

Beth Hart - My California
Great stuff: songs, songwriting, voice and playing of Beth.
The CD comes with nice artwork and booklet including the lyrics.

The National - High Violet
Genre isn't blues. Call it indie or alternative or something else. It really plays a lot on my player.

Johnny Mastro - Beautiful Chaos
Hearing the CD always reminds me of the outstanding gigs of this band.
Wonderful raw and dirty blues with a guy blowing his soul out on harp.

Cedric Burnside & Lightnin' Malcolm - Telluride Blues & Brews Festival 09/18/2010
A CD of this amazing duo can't be compared with a stunning live gig which will be history end of March next year, because they will go different paths in 2011. Recommended, if you like rootsy blues.
Don't miss their tour when living in the US. Warning: don't forget to put on your dancing shoes! Your feet will have a life of their own. I wish I could see them once again.

Re: Top releases for 2010

Based on the lists here I picked up Mulenium last night. Boy am I glad I listened to you guys. Great stuff.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Top releases for 2010

like Eva, I'm going to cheat and leave out Joe's albums so I get 5 more into this list. These are the albums that I've played the most this year.

Gov't Mule - Mulennium - Mule? they can't do anything wrong as far as I'm concerned. Seeing them live again in Berlin in June was one of the highlights of my year.

Philip Sayce - Innerevolution - the man is a monster! Live he's spectacular and his energy and talent shine through the album too.

Derek Trucks Band -  Roadsongs - the mesmerising Derek Trucks with his regular musicians plus added horns on a live recording. I listen to this a lot.

Steepwater Band - Live at the Double Door I've got to thank ReverendPaul for turning me on to this band. Another live recording from a band who should be much better known. Do yourself a favour and listen to it on CDBaby
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/steepwaterband2

Tom Petty - Mojo this was my summer listening. Lying by the pool in the Portuguese sunshine, cold beer in hand, listening to a classy album - life doesn't get much better than that.

and , thanks to this thread, I've just ordered JJ Grey's Georgia Warhorse. Keep 'em coming!

Thanks Guenter for reminding me about Devon Allman.  I knew he had a new album, but when I checked it was unavailable at my usual source.  I checked periodically, but not until today did I see it was there.  Like Scott Mckeon and Simon McBride, this album's a huge leap in substance from earlier efforts.  Devon's got his uncle's chops, but this music's more modern.  The title cut, "Space Age Blues" is freakin' awesome and most all the songs are pretty strong.  I didn't care for the Stevie cover, but this effort would definitely make my top ten.  Thanks again.

Yes, you are right, Curby. It´s so much better than Torch. I´ve seen him three times live meanwhile, and I was always hoping that his new album would correspond to the quality of his shows. and it does, indeed.
