Spent 2 years in Michigan's U.P. (2006 & 2007) so I had a stash of winter work gear in the closet. Insulated gloves, insulated boots, heavy socks, long johns, warm hat, super heavey duty carhardt jacket.

Wrong chemistry, shape, strength, roundness and acid solubility in the CA beach deposits...besides, could you just imaging the protests of the evil mining company digging up the beaches here!

I had no idea sand was so complicated. And you sure hit the nail on the head about our beaches! We had a big protest here about the powerlink groundbreaking. Swore to keep them in the courts 'till doomsday...

Not too long ago, when I would occasionally smoke a cigar or three, I found myself at a business seminar in Santa Barbara, staying at the most renowned hotel in the area, where I discovered (to my chagrin) that smoking was strictly forbidden on the beach.
Being from Chicago, I took a quick vote and overturned that ordinance and enjoyed a fine Ashton while watching the sunset. Yes, Cali is sure defensive when it comes to their beaches. Rick, you'll be happy to know I gave up that particular vice, so there will be no concerns if I return. Now about those beer bottles...

We are pretty far off topic now with beaches in Cali on a frozen tundra thread, but I will now completely pop your bubble. One may imbibe ZERO adult beverages on or near any beach or public park anywhere in San Diego! 
Been in Eastern Minnesota, Western Wisconsin since Sunday. So far the high temperature that I've seen is 13 deg F.
It was -16 deg F in Eau Claire this morning.
Man... there's some tough folks up this way to able to tolerate this all winter long
The Amsterdam area is experiencing unprecedented conditions today, I'm gonna call this Snowmageddon. Pictures to follow....
It took me an hour and a quarter to drive to work, and two and a half hours to get home, a journey that normally takes 20-40 minutes. I only made it home so "fast' because I know all the possible alternative routes - if I didn't, I'd still be stuck out there, driving over snow-packed sheets of ice at a maximum of 30 kph (if I was lucky), but mostly at around 10 kph or less, literally crawling.
The western coastal strip of Holland received between 15-30 cms (6 ins. - 1 foot) of snow from early morning till early afternoon, an absolutely unprecedented amount for us in such a short time span. (I know, readers in the northern US or Canada, or even in northern England, are laughing by now.)
Here's the best part - they've forecast another 10-20 cms on top of this in the next 24 hours!

I know what you mean.
Same in Germany. In the Ruhr area, we got about 15-20 cms last night. Outside it looks beautiful but driving is a different story.
Max speed was about 5 km per hour on our motorways.
Tomorrow Christmas shopping and a long walk with our dog who loves the snow without any limits.
What a mess! No plows, no salt trucks..and BIKES! Time to put on a pot of soup and watch some Xmas movies. Great pics. Some looked like here last winter! C

"Up early to tune in EPL Football. All canceled due to heavy snow! Now I know it is really bad. Stay warm and safe folks. See, even we Californians have to suffer.

Out West they call it the "Pinapple Express" which brings lots of rain and wind from Hawaii's region of the pacific and dumps it on us unsuspecting Californians, resulting in California getting hammered with our version of winter (i.e. rain).
5" - 7" of rain in a few days may not be alot to many places in the US or even in the world, but couple that with poor soil, hills/mountains and you can get some pretty serious mud slides.
Haven't heard of anything serious yet, but if this keeps up for a few more days (as it is expected to do), once again, we'll make the national news for houses slideing down hillsides and mud in the streets.
And of course, nobody on the freeways would even think of slowing down or leaving a little more room between cars. I think the tow trucks and the car body shops make alot of their annual profits during this type of weather out here.
Yes Mike. We are just missing the worst of it down here and lucky for that! Headline this morning after the city tried to clear out the creek bottoms: Judge rules storm drainage cleanout must stop until proper environmental impact forms are filled out. I guess if your home floods because the ditch and drain system is clogged with brush it is not an environmental impact. By the time the last I is dotted, it will be too late.

Worst hit today and tomorrow even more with possible waterspouts and tornadoes. Flooding all over. The news says you guys to the north got it even worse.
Good luck to (amongst others) Jim M, Patty, Bill S, Rhonda, Melissa, Tom (if you're home), and the entire north-east crowd for today as you prepare for a mega storm!
Since y'all will be staying indoors you may as well check in here and let us know what's happening and that you're ok.

It was icy this morning, one of our employee's little girl slipped on the ice and broke her arm, which is a major bummer!! Snow is one thing, ice is a different story. I think Bill S. is going to get really dumped on in Chicago with the white fluffy stuff. Good luck to all the others George mentioned. I'm hoping for the temperature to rise in Philly so we can skip the icy stuff & power outages tomorrow and just get rain.
One of our friend's son is doing a medical residency in Atlanta, which isn't use to the wintry stuff that got tossed their way. He had to sleep at the hospital because some of the other residents couldn't get there. He set 24 ankle fractures in less than 48 hours. One of them was a young woman who was so stir crazy, she went for a jog and broke her ankle!!
