PBS has announced that the Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan — In Session program will air as a special on its stations throughout the month of December (check local listings). Grammy Award winning bluesman Robert Cray will serve as special fundraising host on the public television broadcasts.

In 1983, when legendary blues guitarist Albert King, then age 60, was joined by his disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan, then age 29, on a Canadian sound stage for the live music TV series In Session, magic took place. Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session is not simply a television program: it’s a summit of two master musicians. The only known recording of King and Vaughan performing together, this is the concert that blues fans in general, and Stevie Ray Vaughan fans in particular, have been waiting for.

An hour and 45 minutes, approximately, was taped of the two. What will thrill viewers who are fans of the blues, players of the blues, and who adore SRV, is that the televised concert includes at least one SRV tune — “Texas Flood” — that was not included on either of the two CD releases of the session.

The PBS special Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan — In Session contains the following songs: “Born Under a Bad Sign,” “Call It Stormy Monday,” “Texas Flood,” “Pride and Joy,” “Match Box Blues,” and “Don’t Lie to Me.”

I live in hope Vik. I would be one of the thrilled viewers. Unfortunately, out here, we get refried Doo Wop and Yani and Celtic whatever non stop during the beg sessions. It makes me crazy to hear of the good stuff in the other parts of the country. I guess you have to cater to the base that gives though.

If anyone hears about it airing in the Harrisburg PA area (WITF), please post.  I never seem to have any luck trying to look up our PBS schedule, but I am keeping my eye out.

It played on my local station last week and it's wonderful!!! It is pledge time, so record it if that annoys you. Warning, it will make you miss them both  sad    Cathy

Well this aired in the Central PA area on WITF last night from 11:30pm-1:00am.  I noticed the listing a couple hours beforehand, but I was extremely sleepy and figured I wouldn't make it, and I didn't.  I did think I'd at least make it back here to the computer to post about it, but no... roll   Well anyway, it's re-airing again this Saturday night (technically very early Sunday morning) from midnight-1:30am. wink

Thanks for the heads-up, Cathy....I missed it and can't find it on MPT or WETA sad

Edit:  Rebroadcasting on Monday, 12/6/10 at 10:30 PM on MPT.   I'm DVR'ing it.  Can't stand the beg-fest.

Well I was already falling asleep a half hour before the program even started, so I knew I was doomed, but I tried my damnedest to keep my eyes open... a battle I was alternatively winning and losing throughout the whole program.  I remember seeing and hearing some great stuff, but I know I missed a lot too.  Thankfully I was only conscience for about a minute of the begfesting.  Anyway, I sure hope they repeat the program a couple more times before the month is out, and that I'm home and awake to catch it... no DVR here. sad

better check your local programming online for their monthly schedule. APTV here is only going to air it one time this month, tonight at 10:30CST. glad I looked at the rest of the month's schedule or I might have waited to see it at a later date. should be great, I just want to hear Stormy Monday and the Overall Junction jam. thanks Vik for the initial alert, I will have a hard time staying awake too. it must be done.

Just finished watching this video on DVD. Very, very cool! Those long extended solos and jams gave me a much improved grasp of SRV's playing (I'm not a guitarist, and until recently only had SRV's studio albums), and blues style in general. It was really fun to watch the interplay between the two of them.
