Topic: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

The Florida Theatre in Jacksonville,Florida.  She’s a beautiful and palatial venue and hostess.  Over the course of eighty-three years, she has hosted many different events, and remains an Historic establishment.  On December 3,2010 our Grand Ol Girl embraced Joe Bonamassa and his Band.  Joe Bonamassa, Carmine Rojas, Rick Melick, and Bogie Bowles and the crew set foot on that historical stage and cast out a merciless beckoning of Blues and Rock for about two delicious hours.  These guys brought it.  Assured, and without mercy.  This show is so damn good that it just leaves you only able to cry out for more from your seat.  And if you’re foolish enough to not have stood up and let your soul dance, then shame on you.

The Meet & Greet was a real privilege.
This was my first time attending a Bonamassa Show.  I brought along my husband, and sixteen year old daughter, Kait.  This was her first concert/show for any musician, ever.  And she is getting to meet  Joe Bonamassa!   I couldn’t think of a better venue to bring her to, nor a better musician to introduce her to.  In a day and age where the art of honest musicianship with soul and meaning are dwindling, this was one of the best experiences I could have ever hoped to have had the chance to share with my daughter.
Inside the greeting lobby, we gathered.  Mostly a group of people and members from WJCT, Jones College Television attended.  They had bought a special Meet & Greet/ticket package when Joe’s Royal Albert Hall PBS show aired back in August.  Then there was myself, Kait and two others who had Street Teamed our way to the Meet & Greet.   Joe appeared at the top of the stairs, and grinned while he announced to us all that “Today was going to be different”. “Today you can either meet OR greet, whichever you choose”.  Some folks went silent.  They took him seriously, and glanced around the room, and at each other.  Others like us, laughed and enjoyed Joe’s tension breaking humor.
Joe made his way down the stairway to talk to us all.  Roy Weisman was in the back of the gathering, talking to the folks from WJCT.  Joe sported a Gray baseball hat, red t-shirt, and his signature JB gray sweatshirt was the comfy choice of outfit this afternoon.  Always pleasant, and always a gentleman.  One man brought a guitar for Joe to sign.  Joe gave us all a treat and gave the low down of this fine guitar.  Pictures were taken, stories told, many signatures obtained from Joe on CD’s, and items.  When it was our turn, a gal from www.Blues411.com took our photo with Joe, as well as took the picture of us all with my camera.  Super nice lady!
Joe signed our tickets to the show, also signed a picture of Katie Blue & the Joe Bobble for Jb Bowman that I promised to get signed for her.  I then thanked Joe for his time, and handed him two sea shell ornaments I created.  The shells were as identical as I could find while walking a beach close to our home in St Augustine, Florida.   One ornament was for Joe, and the other For Sandi Thom.  I told him that now they owned a piece of St Augustine, and they always had a reason to come back to see us.  He was taken back, as someone had brought him a gift. No one else at this meet & greet brought him a gift.  That in itself took me by surprise, as Joe gives so very much in every show .  Over the course of many years, I have met many musicians.  None have been the gentleman that Joe Bonamassa has been when it comes to meeting those who support him and enjoy his music.
At 8:00pm sharp, the show began.  The lights dimmed down, and it was on.  In a daunting black suit and white shirt, Joe and the Band set the groundwork for the show by slicing fire and belting out Cradle Rock.

The set list for the evening:
Cradle Rock
So Many Roads
When The Fire Hits The Sea
So It’s Like That
If Heartaches Were Nickles
Slow Train
Steal Your Heart Away
Sloe Gin
Ballad of John Henry
Happier Times
Never Make a Move Too Soon
The Great Flood
Young Man Blues
Woke Up Dreaming
Mountain Time
( Django- ZigZagWanderer noted it was Django- I got lost in enjoying my very first Joe show...apologies)
Encore:  Bird On  A Wire and Just Got Paid

During “When The Fire Hits The Sea”, one of Joe’s amps blew.  The crew was on it, and the show remained on going.  Joe took a brief break after this third song, and greeted Jacksonville.  He cited one of the first times he played a venue in Jacksonville, “The Freebird”.  He recalled a rainy Monday night, and a very quiet audience even after he peeked out and saw all ten people there to see him play.  Those ten people got their socks rocked off.  Joe then tells us WHY there were only ten people there that night.  On the calendar for the club that month, Joe’s band was a last minute booking.  And the Calendar had stated “Closed for renovations” for that evening.  Tonight in Jacksonville at The Florida, over 1,900 people were there and none of us could get enough of what Joe and the band was playing.  Most were chomping at the bit for the next chord played by Joe.  Others. Like my usually very quiet husband were busy picking their bottom jaws up off the floor, and yelling “BONN-A-MASS-AAAAAA” in between lyrics being sung by Joe.
Things got very humorous while Joe played “If Heartaches Were Nickles” also.  Those in the front right seat of the venue had Joe nearly laughing as he sang “You KNOW about the high cost of lovin’, baby…”  Joe chuckled and shook his head, kept on going, but it was a good time.  Nothing stuffy about Joe’s performance-nothing like having over 1,900 friends to share a good time with while you rock out like Thor and his hammer…    The encore performance of “Bird On A Wire” was no less than stunning.

The guys brought it, fierce, and with force.  Carmine Rojas, Bogie Bowles, and Rick Melick  were brilliant along with Joe.  The people seated behind us were from Pensylvania, and it was also their first time at a Bonamassa show.  They were an older couple, and the lady giggled as she eventually showed me that she had wadded up the wrapping paper from her straws from her drinks, and had inserted them into her ears.  She was still enjoying the show.  The sound quality was clear, warm, rich and enveloping.  The stage show, damn good.  Those who love all things Bonamassa got everything they wanted and more visually.  Nothing omitted from this performance.  Strong, soul –grabbing, wielding power, blues and soul, and just plain rocked the hell out of Jacksonville.
Thank you, Joe Bonamassa and band along with crew, for THE best Friday night out in a long time.
On the way out of the theatre, my daughter asks “So, um mom?  When does Joe play in Jacksonville again?  You DO know that Ashley plays bass guitar, and I think she’d like to hear Joe, too”.  (Ashley is my daughter's best friend)…….Out of the mouth of babes……  (:

An excellent story and review Jen. Now, that your daughter has had a fire breathing introduction to live concerts, is it like crack? i.e. No other band will ever match up for the rest of her life after the first taste of Joe? wink Way to break in a Bonaholic mom! tongue

She's still talking about the show.  Every phone call she has made to her friends since Friday she's talking about it.  I over heard her say"I thought mom was full of it,and she said she was taking me to a real concert, and I thought maybe it was going to be kind of boring, but man! I was wrong, dude, you gotta hear this guy!".  LoL.  The thing is, I do listen to alot of classical music, so she thought it was going to be something she wouldn't like.

Her best friend Ashley is grounded, for whatever reason, so I didn't get to bring her.  Kait told Ashley on the phone, "Dude, you gotta to get those grades up, you GOT to come with us next time- IT ROCKED!". big_smile

Little does Kait know she already has a ticket to another show.  She has no idea what was included with the litho when I bought it.  Now, I just have to decide which show to take her to in the future.  And I will more than likely surprise her.  Am hoping to bring her bestie next time, also.

Re: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

Excellent review Jen.  That's just about exactly the way I remember it too.  I think Joe chuckling on stage was the result of a girl screaming 'I Love You Joe'  during a very quite part of the song.  Too much screaming can be distracting and he usually, being the professional that he is, just keeps on playing but he seemed to have been taken off guard.  It was quite funny. Again, wish we had met, but next time we'll plan a little better.   Looking forward to Hollywood.  cool

Hey, we surely will meet!  It was just a mishap of where we were seated vs where you were.

Funny thing is, we were in almost identical seats, but on opposite side of the theatre, from what I saw from your pics ( loved them!) The pic of you all embraced by Big Jeff is a hoot!

Have a blast at Hollywood.
I tried to convince the hubby to go, but work had him fly back up to DC, and I'm not going to go alone.

We'll eventually catch up with each other, I'm sure.

Re: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

Jen, Thanks for the big grin! I saw it all in my head and felt the joy. Joe will remember you. He's like an elephant! I'm so thrilled about your daughter's response. There is a Street Team effort to get school reps, as I remember. Sounds like she's a great candidate. As for not going alone, you won't be alone once you get there. It's one big family!   Cathy

Susan, I know you and Ken are having a blast! Sorry to miss it!

Re: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

Joe was amazing - my wife and I had front-row seats in the Loge (front balcony), and they were great seats!

His Silver Jubilee Marshall head bit the dust mid-song (the pilot light was still lit), and Joe immediately heard something was wrong, and pointed back at the amp.  His techs had it replaced with another Silver Jubilee by the end of the song.

The sound system and balance were perfect - the vocals were loud and strong, and the guitar wasn't overpowering.

The theremin was great fun - he got some pretty spacey sounds going  big_smile

The big surprise to me, not having seen him before, was the bass player - super funky but kept a strong beat while doing cool melodic stuff - even some allman brotherish double leads with bass and guitar - sweet!

I liked all his guitars - the double cutaway was probably my least favorite for tone, and the gold top with white pickguard and the flying V my favorites.

My wife mentioned that Joe seems to pay a lot of attention to the quiet parts, and setting a mood or feeling in a song - I agree, and it's obvious how much he cares about every note.

Joe was definitely responding to a woman who cried out "I Love You, Joe" right in a quiet moment - I'm sure he hears that stuff all the time, but this gal's voice was so plaintive and sincere, Joe and the band shared a laugh and he saluted the woman and carried on with the song.  It was a sweet and funny moment.

I'm so impressed with how open Joe is, and nice.  It was a real pleasure to see him, and I'll definitely try to see him again.

Good luck and best wishes to all you Joe Bonamassa fans  smile

Re: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

Excellent show, no doubt; though I felt it came off as a little too rehearsed.  The lady yelling "We love you Joe" was received well.  All the other interjections fell into the "Shut up and listen" category (IMO.)

My set list is one song different from the one listed here.  I think he finished the set with "Django" instead of "Mountain Time."

I could have very well made a mistake on that set list.  This was my very first show.
I tried writing it down, believe it or not, but stopped as I was having far too much fun for the first time in a long time.  I am almost certain you are corrrect about my mistake in the set list.

I was quite enlightened when my usually quiet husband yelled out once.  It isn't very often that he enjoys things like concerts/shows.  He works all of the time, and just plain does not go to these events.

Sincere apologies if I wrote the wrong thing down.  No offense meant.

Re: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

Well, I can only think of one remedy for my fail.

I was not able to obtain the set list ( husband impatient  as he went back into "I can't stand crowds" mode as soon as show was over) nor did I finish my notes due to enjoying my time at Joe's show.

I guess I'm going to have to repeatedly attend Joe's shows somehow.  smile
That may very well remedy any possible omissions.

Once again, profuse apologies.  I feel horrible about this.  Have edited and gave ZigZagWanderer credit for pointing that out, and I appreciate their help with that.  smile

You are both right. Last song of the set was "Django" into "Mountain Time."

Thanks Roadshow. smile

All I remember by that time in the show is that I was singing my self into oblivion, permanent smile on my face, and didn't want the show to end.

Some people require more cowbell.  I require attending more Joe shows. <~~ I think this should be my new signature....

Re: Jacksonville 12/3/2010

"profuse apologies" are certainly not required!  First, even the hardest-core fans frequently produce different set lists (I don't know why, it just works that way.) And, second, as pointed out above, it seems we were both right.

I hate to say this but I much prefer just the full India intro. Django dserves to be heard in full by itself, imo.
