Re: Definitely my new favourite pedal!
That does sound fantastic but I wish I could play that ambient stuff! How do you get in to playing things like that....like Eric Johnson? I have always been blues and rock based playing and would love to learn that stuff.

Honestly the best way to pick up the EJ stuff is to totally become absorbed. I probably went a whole year listening to nothing else and it just kinda rubbed off. I was a total SRV clone prior to that and it was a TOUGH transition.
Eric's clean style is centered around playing single note melodies that fit withing chord structures. He often times only picks 2 or 3 notes of the chord and the result is a cool almost piano-like approach to his rhythm. For the lead stuff there is a lot of string skipping, pull offs, and alternate picked pentatonic licks.
The big "AH HA!!" moment for my interpretation of the EJ style was when I began to see the relationships between your standard minor blues pentatonic scales and a corresponding major key. For example on "Cliffs of Dover" the song constantly blurs the line between the key of E minor and G major. There is also a certain classical flair to everything he plays, not so much in the Yngwie Malmsteen sense but it's definately there. That constant major/minor tension if you will....
Anyways as you can tell I'm a total EJ nut!
Re: Definitely my new favourite pedal!
Well put Justin - you really summed up EJ well...what blows me away about his chord playing is his use of intervals with respect to the root - and how he will use the upper octave root in the chord instead of the traditional voicing.
I go weeks without listening to EJ then all of a sudden I'm immersed in his greatness again for a few weeks. Copping his licks REALLY helps clean up my picking and makes me a little more conscious of melody instead of straight blues licks.
Ahh time for some ACL!!

Not a pedal as such, but the ambience definitely reminded me of this video...
You cannot beat a TTE...and you sure do pay for that privilege - some nice playing there too.
If a pedal for 200smackers could get even halfway near that...I'd be buying it right now.
Re: Definitely my new favourite pedal!
Not to open a whole different can of worms, but my EP-3s can do the TTE thing better than the TTE IMO. The repeats on the TTE are very clear, almost digital-like but with more warmth and the signature "airy-ness" of a real tape echo. Very good delay unit, probably the best that's been made in the last 20-30 years. The EP-3 is even warmer and the repeats are MUCH less predicable with more warble and subtle speed variations that creates this wonderful chorusy atmosphere. For 1/3 the price I'd take 3 near mint Echoplexes myself!

You're not going to get that close at $200, but for $300 you could try the Skreddy Echo or perhaps an older Empress Superdelay. ProGuitarShop did a comparison between the TTE and the Empress and it was CLOSE....but again I bought a beat up old Maestro Echoplex for 300 bones and it's what all other delays are judged upon. Besides, knowing you Mr. Wammbarro you HAVE TO have what Page uses man!!! There's a certain nostalgic vibe to those Echoplexes....
Re: Definitely my new favourite pedal!
Let's see if I can grab an EP2or3 for around £300 over here...doubt it!

Ehhghhh I forgot you were in the UK! Welllll at least you guys get Marshalls cheaper than us Yanks! That SUCKS because there are a ton of really nice EP2s and EP3s on Ebay right now but the shipping wouldn't make it very economical for you. Seriously though, the Strymon El Capistan, Skreddy Echo, and Empress Superdelay are so close to nailing the Echoplex thing you'd never miss the differences in a live setting. I've also heard that Pete Cornish's tape echo emulator is awesome as well, but I'll never get a chance to try one of those. For the $$$ ask Jakey, he's digging the SIB Echodrive. Sounds at least half as awesome as a real tape delay IMO, probably the best bang for the buck.
Re: Definitely my new favourite pedal!
Currently don't have any amp and am looking for an early 70s Marshall. I might just be able to reach a Metro kit, but the shipping and customs to the UK is another 400 more I think...
I will have a closer look at those pedals...and maybe at the Replica too...all pricey, pricey!
Thanks.
Re: Definitely my new favourite pedal!
not a huge pedal guy, have been using a line 6 pod pro xt rackmount for the last several years, but these seem like very well done pedals, kudos.
