Topic: Is Joanne the new Davy?

For that last year or so my three favorite "undiscovered" talents we're Joanne Shaw Taylor, Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo and the Kris Lager Band. Love all three of them and think they'll be huge one day.

But it seems like Joanne has really taken off and I LOVE her new CD. Great tunes and she has that modest attitude which I love:)

I'm a huge Davy K fan but it seems like he's not doing much Back Door Slam stuff and I'm not a real big fan of his new super group. Any one heard of touring stateside?

On the same token it seems like Joanne is on everyone's lips (good or bad) but thats what it takes to make it in this game. The buzz is well deserved and I think she has what it takes to keep getting bigger and bigger.

Just a few questions and my two cents!

Re: Is Joanne the new Davy?

Having just tour managed Joanne, I can say she is definitely getting the attention she has earned and deserves. Press coverage is excellent and she has more to come. I first saw Joanne when she just 14 putting the fear of god into the main act she was supporting. She has definitely walked the walk and earned her place. She has so much more to offer, very talented song writer.
Listen out for the Paul Jones BBC session going out on the 13th Dec, it was recorded last week and it sounded excellent before going into mixing.

Re: Is Joanne the new Davy?

I second everything Martin said. I am very impressed by her all around talent. I love a girl that plays with "guts". I think the way you posed the thread makes it hard. D.K. hit with a bang in the States first. He stirred folks the way Joe did. Always thrilling when it's a young'in. His label got behind him big time as well as the boost from his affiliation w/PRS Guitars. So, apples and oranges. It's dangerous ground to compare anyway. That has led to "SRV style" being labeled as bad  sad   SO..I'm excited for her future, and rejoice in her success. She's just too darn cute not to  big_smile    Cathy

Re: Is Joanne the new Davy?

Hmm, its an interesting question Musiclova. There have been some differences, Davy was pretty unknown when he first headed stateside, while Joanne has kept her UK profile fairly high after her rise to fame here which only really began at the start of last year. So Joanne has done great to become better knwon both in the USA and in the UK and artciles like the Blues Revue are testimony to that. Yet without being in the USA I'm not quite sure how large her profile is. Davy and BDS benefited from some high profile support slots and I've not been aware of JST having the same opportunities just yet.
One thing that has been very impressie about Joanne's rise is that it has been done through Ruf Records. Many have felt they've not ben as successsful as they could have been with signed artists in the past.
Great credit to both Joanne and Davy, they've used the opportunities given to them with plenty of hard work and a large degree of talent.

The main point that I'd emphasis though is that while much of the marketing is that British blues is back, as per the advert in Blues Revue that featured Joanne and Oli, or statements such as Back Door Slam being the best British blues band since Fleetwood Mac are incorrect, as there has been plenty of great British acts recording over the last 10-15 years. These include The Hoax, Aynsley Lister, The Nimmo Brothers, Ian Parker, Ian Siegal, Matt Schofield, Danny Bryant etc. Many have not been able to follow the same paths to success stateside (yet), however each also has much to offer and should not be overlooked in any analysis.

Re: Is Joanne the new Davy?

No.  Not even close.

Re: Is Joanne the new Davy?

Agreed, you really can't compare playing styles at all with these two and I didn't make that clear in my first post. I was mostly talking about the buzz behind her (well deserved).

I must admit I didn't hear about D. K. until he did that CBS morning show and by then the machine had been working very hard and very well for him. DK has had some amazing high profile gigs that JST or many of the other excellent English or American slingers haven't gotten. (I'm a huge Hoax and Matt Schofield fan).

I'm very curious to find out what DK and his management are doing/planning? Davy just doesn't seem like a side man and I think we all know what SRV did when it came down to being a Bowie sideman...the rest was history for SRV.

I hope DK gets back to doing his own thing, he's a rare talent. Never the less, I will support both of these artist as well as many others. After all they need us and we need them:)

It can always be an odd thing that "makes a band" big. It seems like some times there is no rhyme or reason. I watched Conan last night and a band named "Deerhunter" was on. WTF was that?

We need a huge star in the blues world and it ain't Cyndi Lauper to get the word out again. If country can do it then I believe the blues can do it. Then again, do we really want what country has turned into these days for the blues world?

Re: Is Joanne the new Davy?

Some interesting thoughts. As for Davy, well he seems to be song writing a lot according to his facebook updates. Hopefully the experience as being a sideman has been a creative process for his own compositions (I hope the same for Joe).
As for 2011, I suspect the Brit to make the biggest impact in the USA could be Matt Schofield. He's now relocated to Canada (where his girlfriend lives) and in January will be going to record his new album in New Orleans with producer John Porter who has produced many great albums, most recently Hard Believer and Painkiller by Tommy Castro. I expect that will raise his profile a great deal in the USA. Uk fans don't worry, he has a UK tour planned for May.
As for Cyndi Lauper, it's pretty crazy that she's been nominated for a Grammy in the cattegory best traditional blues album...   mad
