Topic: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

It's about time we had another weather grumble-moan topic since there's a mega-storm going on along the eastern seaboard.

Cathy is snowed in and there seems to be something I've never heard of called 'thundersnow' going on around Philly. Bearforce 1 has been unable to land at BWI, which is closed, so what happens to tomorrow's game? Are NFL games ever postponed due to weather?

Meanwhile over here, we've had the first pre-Christmas snow that I can recall in my 20 years in Amsterdam - only a bit in the city but loads has fallen in the countryside. Today's high was -6 C, or low 20's F.

More snow expected in the coming days.....groan.

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

Not so much snow around here (maybe 5cm/2 inches) but it's enough to bother people on the road as it's quite unusual. Meanwhile, we have really low temperatures. It was around -17°C (barely 2°F) two hours ago, and now it's gone up to -12°C (10°F). I think it's gonna snow.

I like that kind of weather, but I don't have to leave home. I hope everything's fine for those who are stuck because of snow storms wink

Thundersnow is really strange - we had it here in 1978, and I think one other time.

Laughed myself silly driving by the grocery store - no parking spots- forget Christmas shopping - we need food! - there is probably no milk or bread to be had in any store on the eastern seaboard.

Cathy - I bet your yard is just lovely at the moment!

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

It started here about 1:00am last night hasn't stopped since.  At 6:30pm I measured 9" in our front yard, and it'll still be coming down for a long while yet.  It's kinda cool in a way, and it's entertaining watching our Bernese Mountain Dog having a ball in it (although it has interfered with his pooping routine all day today, poor boy, lol).  At least it's hitting us on the weekend when many people don't have to be at work, including my husband.  I did have plans to check out a bluegrass band called Yarn tonight in Harrisburg with a friend, but of course that ain't happening for me now. hmm

Can you elaborate on "strange"? I can't imagine this phenomenon.

Here's the deck earlier today, more has come down since - http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8571/s … r09002.jpg

Beautiful - just don't forget to shovel off the deck or it will be a patio area instead!

"Thundersnow" is just what the name implies - thunder and lightning accompanied by snow instead of rain. I've experienced it very few times in 50 years, but I couldn't put a number on it. It is extremely rare indeed - at least around here.

I think what Sandy means by strange is that you don't usually associate snow with thunder and lightning. So it is "strange" -  i.e., "unusual".

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

Well, we got some snow this morning in St. Louis. It really isn't even measurable, but you CAN see it on the ground. They're calling for full on snow for Christmas this year. I guess we'll see.

Well in Annandale, VA outside of DC we have over 2ft. of snow. My car is totally buried.

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

Strange in a thundersnow storm is the lightning - looks like wires popping in the distance - everything just seems out of place like Lee said.

It's 5:30 am - ah - the sounds of snowblowers before dawn - my awesome husband is outside digging out my car so I can go to work - I have one of those jobs that NEVER closes for the weather!  Looks like a foot or so right now.

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

Its 6:30am here in Suffolk Long Island and the tv says 21" of snow. My wife had to shovel open the back door to let the dogs out and she reported 4'to5' drifts in the back yard. Its still snowin.

George, there was talk on the news last night of the Jets/Falcons game being delayed for a couple of hours because Atlanta was having trouble getting into the tri-state area, however I just heard on the news that kick-off will be at 1:00 so I guess they made it in okay.

Sandy, Drive Safe-you know its nasty out there.

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

Time to resurrect this old moan topic, two weeks earlier than last year.  roll

There are still remnants on the ground of the 2-3 cms of snow that caused the worst evening traffic jams in Dutch history last night, totaling nearly 900 kms. Just imagine what might happen if we ever got, say, 6-8 inches overnight? Nothing would move.  roll

Holland (and Germany and England) are all experiencing varying degrees of snow and freezing temperatures. It hasn't been above 0 (32F) here since the end of last week. We are being warned tonight that tomorrow will be a particularly nasty day, possibly the nastiest day in a very long time.  roll

Our daytime high tomorrow is expected to be only a degree or so "more" than the nighttime low, somewhere around -4 to -5 (low 20'sF) but the strong easterly wind is predicted to produce a wind chill of -15 (5F !!!).

And that on Dec. 1  roll   sad

(But the Dutch are happy as long as they can go skate on natural ice.)  neutral

Brrrr...

It was so cold in Southern California this morning, I nearly had to put on a long sleeve shirt.

Re: Winter 09-10 now Winter 10-11

My visiting son and family from Berlin looked at the forecast for the weekend since they are heading back, and my son just moaned. Chilly here at 62F and Berlin is running -5 to -12C. Had to fire up the heater yesterday as it dipped way down to the mid 40's overnight.  cool Our big traffic jam is forthcoming with the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on the bay with fireworks.  tongue (might have to put on a sweater)

I think Californians and Floridians, etc should be banned from this topic.  sad

If you banned them then they'd have to move........NOT!!

George - That forecast you mentioned sucks.  Only pearl of wisdom I can impart is make sure the snakebite kit is primed.  Have you ever noticed how crowded taverns and pubs are in ridiculously bad weather?  In my crazy youth bad weather meant a full cooler, a couple country girls and a 4-wheel drive pick-up truck.  Man those were the days.
