Many promoters/venues put a "HOLD" date with the performer in case there is demand then the contract for the second show can be be signed and added.  It's a hedge for the promoter to put a show on hold until initial ticket sales are gauged. That's my guess anyway.

Just like Genesis down by you Nancy.  They started with only one show at the United Center and have since added 2 more, one at a time.  (I'll be going to the 1st night)
