Topic: Va Beach Show

Well guys first of all let me say that I am a BIG J.B. fan. This is my third show this year and I have traveled as many a 7 1/2 hours one way to see a show. What I have learned consistently from my experiences is that the sound man seems to only be concerned about the sound where he is set up. Overall, twice I have been directly behind him and everything was good, and twice I have been off center and have experienced the same disappointment. The show last night was in probably the most acoustically adjusted building that I have ever been in and with reason I was very disappointed with the sound technician.
Being a big follower and knowing most of the material front and backwards, I know that the band performed at a very high level last night. I listened for the little things such as dynamics of Joe's playing and vocals, The precision and perfection that Bogie plays with, The meshing of Bogie and Carmine as one on the bottom laying a great groove, and lastly the fill the J.B.'s band needed for a time and found in Rick on the keyboards.
Last night I took 5 new fans to the show with me as we talked about the show afterwards, we seemed to share the same opinions.
Very rarely were Joe's Vocals clear enough to understand. At times they were overpowered and unheard. With the exception of The Great Flood, If Heartaches were Nickels and Slow Gin, Rick might as well as sat the show out because, any where other than on the stage he didn't exist. With the exception of a muffled kick drum Bogie seemed to be playing on stage volume alone / which eliminated a lot of the dynamics off stage. Carmine's Bass was also very muddy and at times drowned out Joe's guitar.
I know that there may be other opinions out there that differ from mine but, I feel as a dedicated fan that paid a price and traveled a good ways too see the show that I should share this. Also I am disappointed for the new fans that made the trip with me. I know with my heart that the Band put the effort in and played great and that's what makes it sad. Being a musician myself, one thing that I learned in the past is that a sound man can make you or break you on any given night. I truly believe that the sound man let the Band down last night. Not to mention the audience. This one falls directly on him and not the beautiful acoustically friendly venue.

Re: Va Beach Show

I'm sad that your first post here expressed such bitter disappointment in your experience.

Re: Va Beach Show

I really don't mean to be so negative! I Love the Band as a whole and will (without a doubt) be at their next semi-local show. I listen to J.B. music every single day whether on the road or at home. I was just so pumped for this show and the chance to introduce new fans to Joe. My hope is that they travel with me again along with others in the future.

Re: Va Beach Show

I had a great experience at the VA Beach show with my two sons (our first JB show). I would agree that Rick was low in the mix but, overall from my seat (5th row, center), that it sounded good.

What an incredible show. I doubt that there is a better band out there. They are just so dialed in and into the music. Truely amazing. The set list was great, the only change from what I noticed, from recent set lists, was they played Story of a Quarryman instead of playing When the Fire Hits the Sea.

I also had a chance to meet Joe before the show at the meet and greet and met the rest of the band after the show buy the tour bus. There was only a handful waiting with us. The band were all very kind and gracious.

What a night!

Re: Va Beach Show

Forgot to mention that Joe said they are planning on finishing recording of the new JB in Nashville in March (I think). Rick said the new album is very organic. He also mentioned that there is a song called "living in a dust bowl" that he loves.

Re: Va Beach Show

Another great show in Va. Beach last night!  Re: the sound, while I don't feel the overall sound was problematic, something is going on with the mix when Story of A Quarryman is played.  The guitar that is used (maybe the bonaburst with cream plastic?) seems to be too loud and Joe's vocals are drowned out.  I noticed this is in Wilkes-Barre as well. Other than that (and you couldn't take your beer to your seat sad ) I really enjoyed the show.

Re: Va Beach Show

Maybe it was my seating but I really don't believe there was a bad seat in the house, with maybe the exception of the 12 or so running down the sides.  If I had to pick the most disappointing thing to me, it would be the intelligible vocals. Being big followers we know what Joe is singing, but for the newbies its foreign.

Btw Great pics. How did you get the camera in?

Nice shots Jim!
Itsthepits, you can arrange for a photo pass prior to the concert through Joe's management. See the sticky at the top of the Cool Photos topic on how to do it and what is involved. Welcome to the Forum.  smile

Thanks!  I applied for a photo pass with Joe's mgmt.  Interestingly they didn't even inspect my bag or ask for the pass.

Thanks Andy!  Really, it's the camera, I'm just a hack smile  Besides it can take about 400 pictures to get some of these gems.  Being on the left side of the stage gave me some new angles which gave me some nice opportunities.  I'm plotting Reading, so hopefully I'll make that show.
