Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Well, said.

And good taste... when I was a kid I was emulating Ace Frehley and playing Kiss songs. Wish I had found a more musically advanced band. But as long as it makes you pick up the instrument, that's all you need  wink

Dads buying their kids pro gear makes some people jealous, but I was spoiled as a kid - I had a Les Paul at age 13, and I was a  beginner....and as long as the kid deserves it and they stay out of "other trouble" I say there is value there. Plus you're taught "value" of things.

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

This was great to watch.  I don't understand the criticism at all.  Good on the young guys for having that gear, and more importantly, knowing HOW to USE it.

Wish I had great equipment when I was 18.  But I was lucky though, my mum gave me the cash to buy my '74 Les Paul Deluxe back then (around 1984) but I never had an amp for years.  When I was professionally gigging, I used to have to beg, borrow and steal amps from others.

Recently I bought a hardwood cab Boogie, and my 10 year old son has taken up the guitar and done some gigs around town with his own band.  I lent him my Boogie to play through, but I have had some negative feedback from a few sources who have seen the gigs or the pictures of gigs along the lines of "What the heck is a 10 year old kid doing playing through an amp like that??"

To those people I say - what's wrong with giving children the opportunity to experience gear like this?  If it inspires them to work harder and make a go of the instrument then surely it cannot be that bad?

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Nice post. I have kids, and I know exactly where you are coming from. You could have done a lot worse (although it might have been nice if he was really into a one of the more famous harmonica players!).

I would, however, like to know if you would consider adopting me....

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

I would do with a second father too, particularly if his first present was a JBLP...  big_smile  big_smile  big_smile
Then I could consider having a second mother as well if your wife offered me a Van Weelden head...  big_smile  big_smile  big_smile
And then... I'm already out...  cool

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

My oldest son did all the music lessons etc, nothing took and we gave up. Then, he started playing guitar on his own. 2k for a Christmas dream come true and very happy music is in his life. 15 years later and he still plays for the love of it. Good on all you dads!

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

I really liked the original stuff, the most.  That shows they are all very talented.  Naturals, really.  There's no doubt that they are putting in the time.  Hey,he could have a worse hero, right?  No telling what he might do.  Where have we heard that before? smile

Wish I could find a Bass player that good around here! cool

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Joe had a pretty cool dad, don't you think...?  cool

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Great gear, fine player with a nice touch and instinct.  We all love to emulate our heros and it's how we all started out.
I had a young student once - a great player who was touring with Steve Vai by the age of 18.  when I met him he was 12 and was a SRV fanatic.  My education to him was to put away the SRV records.  Listen to Miles, Ry Cooder, Django, Everybody he can.  Listen to all styles of music..there's something to learn in everything.  Play with who ever will let you play and find your own voice.  Let your heart guide you.

Keep encouraging Steve.  We all need a little.

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Thanks, guys. Steve's been very fortunate in that his primary teacher can play virtually any style you can name and Steve has always been open to all of them. They go through long stretches working on blues, then rock, then country, then finger-style, even classical.

The band Steve's in right now is only a few weeks old, but they're pulling it together very quickly. They're hoping to climb into a van very soon and take it on the road. What they need right now is a genius like Roy Weisman...but what band doesn't?!

It's a scary prospect as a parent to watch your only son head down a career path with exactly no guarantees and more predators than friends patrolling it; but if I've learned anything in almost 60 years it's this--life is short. The best advice for young people I've ever heard came from a silly college football movie I watched one rainy Sunday several years ago now: Find out what it is you love to do, then figure out a way to make a living at it. With a lot of perseverance--and a little luck--I believe these 3 cats can make it.

Check out their new YouTube page if you get the time and thanks again for all the encouraging words. My dear ole granny used to say, If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything.

You folks are all damn nice!

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

I gotta know what you all using to record them playing... I have a Zoom H3 and It does alright but i dont know if I am using it right or setting up the gear right to get that balanced sound you all are getting.

On the topic of the guitar man, He has some excellent chops and I tip my hat to him.  I am for sure one of the more blunt people on this forum so I tend to evoke some response. I am sorry if i in any attacked him or whatever.

I have to say that playing crappy gear and working my way thru that stuff into better gear has given me an appreciation for good equipment that is invaluable. I was given one nice piece of gear when I was 18 and that was a Fender Twin...used that my dad found for 600 bucks. He thought i'd rather have the twin then the cash and he made a great choice.

I bought a Gibson Les Paul R8 once I was 25 and had a job that allowed for it. And I can appreciate it because i earned it... not because It was given to me and I just really like it. My kids are going to start with Epiphone Les Pauls just like i did and when they work hard and make the money to buy a Gibson then they'll have one.  That's not to say I wont let them play mine once in a while.

That version of Machine Gun is insane... i would pay for a ticket to see them play if all they played was that song for 2 hours. If your son wants a smaller rig for smaller gigs, I highly recommend the Bruno Underground 30.  its a lot lighter than those heads and cabinets and it doesnt require a truck to move it all.

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Machine Gun was recorded on a Zoom Q3, but most of the other stuff comes straight off a Canon home video camera with a memory stick instead of a hard drive. They recorded a couple of their originals into Nuendo and lip-synced them to try and provide a nicer sound, but I think the Canon does a pretty great job on its own.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Best Joe B Cover I have heard !!

Any encouragement for young guitar players, be it financial or educational, should be heartily pursued.

One of the most pleasant side effects of GAS is being able to pass on gear to youngsters and watching them get hours of enjoyment and progress in their abilities.

My 13 year old nephew is tearing it up with my old Squier Strat and Park amp that I learnt my first licks on. He has expressed a desire for a Les Paul copy - so much watching and waiting on Ebay being done at the moment.  smile
