Watched the sunset hoping to see a green flash, but didn't get lucky.  Ate the best food yet at Ocean Prime.  Today we're going up to the lighthouse and La Jolla.  San Diego's a great town...maybe better than San Francisco.  Thanks guys for the tips - very appreciated!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the green flash occurs at the equator.

Re: San diego

Green Flash....I couldn't figure out what the heck you guys were talking about.  Looked it up.

"Green flashes and green rays are optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when a green spot is visible, usually for no more than a second or two, above the sun, or a green ray shoots up from the sunset point. Green flashes are actually a group of phenomena stemming from different causes, and some are more common than others. Green flashes can be observed from any altitude (even from an aircraft). They are usually seen at an unobstructed horizon, such as over the ocean, but are possible over cloud tops and mountain tops as well. The green flash can also be observed from the Moon and bright planets at the horizon, including Venus and Jupiter."

I couldn't explain it so I just copied the explanation . Doesn't say anything about the equator so I guess it could happen anywhere under the right conditions.

Hmmm.. Learn something new everyday.

We see them from the beach quite often here in these conditions of crystal clear skies and hot low humidity weather. It has been glorious the last 3 days for Curby's visit. 85 with 35% humidity.

Too true Rocket. The gloomy drizzely summer is here for the tourists to keep them away. All of you just stay where you are. Rocket forgot to include the terribly high cost of living and the corrupt local government. Yeah, this place just sucks.  tongue

Re: San diego

My wife fell backwards on the escalader at the airport and we have to stay an extra day to observe any signs of a concussion.  She didn't want to go to the hospital.  I fell too at the top trying to get her up.

Did I also forget to mention the substandard food handling at many restaurants, el cheapo to ultra ritzy?
And bartenders don't wash their glasses well.  OK, that one may be a bit off!

Re: San diego

Rick, Rocket, RockFarmer, J Dawg and all the other SoCal visitors to Joe's site,

Thanks a million for the great info about California's nicest town.  My wife's tumble on the escalator was very scary, but we were able to make it home the next day.  Some here know of my wife's health problems and I'll not go into it again except to say she'll recover.
We had a great time in San Diego and won't tell everyone about it per Mr. Rocket.  The temperature at Coronado Beach on thursday reached 100 though with the low humidity it was easily tolerable.  After going in the ocean for a few minutes the water actually started to feel real good.  The Hotel Del Coronado was an awesome place and Tina the bartender played a few playlists off my iPod at the outdoor watering hole (I needed the charge anyway).  The one she and some guests enjoyed the best was the blues one I'm making for BigJeff.
The Island Prime restuarant's beef and seafood absolutely blew the drawers off anything I've tasted before and I've been to some good hash houses.
My wife and son weren't up for live music, but I did pass along the excellent info from Rocket to some people we met.
Thanks again  to all!

Scott aka Curby, Mitzi and Quinn

Re: San diego

So glad to hear you escaped with minimal damage to your wife. The Hotel Del, (as we call it) is a famous place and has been for a hundred years plus. It brought my family here in the 1890's. My great grandfather was one of the carpenters that built it. We're proud of our city in spite of its faults. Come back soon.
