Topic: help do i buy a fender tonemaster?????????????????

Have wanted one of these for years , after watching bon jovi 1995 wembley stadium i thought richie sambora had the best tone he had ever had, really fat sounding but tonefull! in the song "hey god live" his les paul sounded awsome and smooth! Re: help do i buy a fender tonemaster?????????????????

Eric Clapton used them in the early 70's with Derek and the Domino's I believe.  If you watch the Concert for Banglidesh he is using one with a half stack cab.  If your looking for headroom and a clean sound I think thats your amp.  You should be able to dial in very good smooth tones with it, and use the hi gain marshall to get distorted should be a good combination.   It might be too loud to get natural distortion due to the head room these things have.

Re: help do i buy a fender tonemaster?????????????????

AD3THREE, you may be mistaken... but then again maybe I am...

I think the tonemaster in question here is the limited run 1990's channel switching amp from the fender custom shop.  Guys like Audley Freed, Mike Campbell, and many others swore by them for years and years.  I would love one.  Really gives marshall a run for its money.

Amp: Firebird Musical Amplifiers
Guitars:62 LP SG , 02 FB VII, JB FB I, 76 Electra Omega, 64 Firebird V, 73 LPC, 61 Custom Tele, 59 and 60 Melody Maker
Effects: Mythos Chupacabra, Strymon Deco/Flint

I just posted my Tonemaster half stack, 4 x 12 cabinet, and road cases on eBay.

It's mint and ready for action.

Page, Perry, Freed...all great tones out of it.

I had one for a couple of months...money troubles...and all that...

Will get one very soon - great job...shame they can't make them all that sweet. A twin or deluxe reissue are awful.

Not the same amp at all in fact there was no Tonemaster until much, much later. If there was a Tonemaster in the 70s it's not documented anywhere. The Tonemaster came out as a follow up to the Vibroking in the '89 timeframe to take the cleans of the VK and offer a "B" Channel that could head into higher gain OD (think Brown).

The Tonemaster is one of those killer designs that never caught on. It's a beast of any amp. Piggyback, bandmaster style.

Rock on amongst yourselves.

Re: help do i buy a fender tonemaster?????????????????

Sorry AD3THREE...these guys are right...amazingly Fender came up with this beast late on.

It was made (partly or wholly) by Bruce Zinky. I've owned one of his custom amps based on a similar circuit - blew my mind...the guy knows how to make an amp - pretty much the best build quality I have EVER seen...and I've seen plenty of custom shops and hand-wired amps.

What the heck am I thinking of then?  I'm sure you guys are right but I thought they had something Tonemaster back in the day.  Shows what I know.  roll

You are likely thinking of music man amps.  that is what clapton really was using in the 70's.

No that was mid 70's.

Re: help do i buy a fender tonemaster?????????????????

"While with Derek and the Dominos (1970), Eric Clapton switched to maple neck Fender Stratocasters (primarily the stratocaster known as “Brownie”). During the Dominos UK Tour, Eric would still play Gibsons. A Fender Champ was his main studio amp used in recording the classic album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.” On stage, he used Fender Dual Showmans or Marshall amps with Fender cabinets."

Found this on Wheres Eric.

Re: help do i buy a fender tonemaster?????????????????

I have wanted one for years.  The Tonemaster is like a Twin on Crack. I have only heard one live and he had some great tones coming from that thing.  I fell head first into the Vox camp so I probably wont be getting one soon.  But I say get it and let us know how awsome it is.
