Topic: San diego

In town and need ideas for places, restaurants and music.

Re: San diego

What do you like to do?

The San Diego Zoo is World Famous and is in a part of town loaded with museums of every sort

The Gas Lamp District near downtown has lots of bars/restaurants/ clubs/ theater, etc. (it where Joe's gonna play in February)

The Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Midway is on permanent display/tour in the harbor.

There's casino's to be found if you want to lose some cash.

I do not recommend heading south of the boarder into Mexico at this point in time.  Lots of safety issues, IMHO.

The beach is always a good bet, albeit maybe a littly cold this time of year.

I'm sure RickB & Rocket will be able to offer even more ideas

Re: San diego

Went to Gaslamp Croce's, Enterprise and Old Town.  Going to Coronado beach this am.  Is Julian worth seeing?  Or La Jolla?

Julian is an old mining area that has become a themed tourist town. Lots of forest up in the mountains. Many small shops and great apple pie! A nice drive and day trip. La Jolla is a ritzy suburb with beautiful beaches and expensive shopping with fantastic restaurants with ocean views. Both places worth the effort Curby. If you like Zoo's, Balboa Park is also a civic showpiece with horticultural exhibits, museums and the world famous zoo. If you go to the Park, have lunch in Cafe Del Rey Morro in the center of the park near the art museums. Great Mexican themed food and drink. Classic weather today for ya as well, should get up near 80! smile

NO

I totally agree!  No to Julian, waste of driving and time.  See La Jolla definitely.  Check out the Museum of Making Music (NAMM associated) in Carlsbad http://www.museumofmakingmusic.org/inde … ;Itemid=20
http://sandiegan.com/coupon/Coupon-Muse … gMusic.php-a huge street fair in Carlsbad Village on Saturday, they claim largest in US of A. A more reasonable Farmer's Market street fair every Wednesday in Ocean Beach (where I-8 West ends) along with a pier worth walking out on and The Black on Newport (street of Wednesday Farmer's Market); Check out free some admission museums (every Tuesday some museums are free) in Balboa Park tomorrow, Reuben H. Fleet Space Museum AND the Natural History Museum, the 2 best IMHO, both free tomorrow!!!). DEFINITELY drive up to Cabrillo National Monument and your $5 entry lasts all week so you can go again-go down to the tide pools from there! The surf is puny today Curby, Thursday a better day-and it should be hot!  How long you here?  Where you staying at?

I'm staying at an H.I. on the bay.  Coronado beach is real nice.  Having a cocktail at the Sun Deck Bar and listening to Percy Sledge.

Now we're talkin' Curby! Sun, surf, a relaxing locale with a beverage of choice and a smooth tune. Life in style. All  Rocket says is good info. Enjoy your stay, the weather should hold perfect as it is today. This is what we call a Santa Ana condition. They usually last two or three days.

Then to slake your thirst, Green Flash Brewing (West Coast IPA is killer) or Stone (Ruination IPA is killer too)...

Cheers!

Re: San diego

Watched the sunset hoping to see a green flash, but didn't get lucky.  Ate the best food yet at Ocean Prime.  Today we're going up to the lighthouse and La Jolla.  San Diego's a great town...maybe better than San Francisco.  Thanks guys for the tips - very appreciated!

Re: San diego

Check the program of San Juan Capistrano coachhouse. We saw two good shows there last year. (Hallo Rocket, Libby and Dany!)

NO problem, Midway IS a major street so it could easily slip into the vocabulary since it was a aircraft carrier.

How you's making out with seeing music at night?

Janis Ian tonight; http://www.amsdconcerts.com/
Smithereens tonight @ 4th & B (Dokken Saturday); http://www.4thandbevents.com/
David Sanborn Antholgy tonight, sold out (except for video tix which is watching on TV but not allowed to get up and view directly-avoid that place like the plague)
Mavis Staple & Charlie Musslewhite tonight at THE BELLY UP (venue highly recommended-Joe has played there  big_smile )
House of Blues San Diego; http://www.houseofblues.com/tickets/sea … =san+diego

My other personal recommendation if you like good Delta and many other blues styles /Americana by a fret master, check out local Robin Henkel, but take note he's NOT at Zels' in Del Mar as some local publications may be advertising-it's cancelled there.
NO fear Robin Henkel is at Lestat's 3343 Adams Avenue; http://www.lestats.com/ a cool "coffee house" with music every night, kind of like the folksy 60's.  8 bucks can't go wrong!
Sun, Nov 7, Lestat's, 8pm, $8
Robin Henkel Blues (and Funk and, Slide guitar and Jazz) Band
Troy Sandow, harmonica
Dave Castel de Oro, saxophone
Danny Campbell, drums
Rod Ratelle, bass
This show features slide guitar and harmonica
3343 Adams Avenue, San Diego (619) 282-0437$8 bucks you can't go wrong!

Other locally and (national / international from time to time) good to weirdness can be found at Brick By Brick; http://www.brickbybrick.com/calendar.php
or The Casbah http://www.casbahmusic.com/

Regarding The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano Güenter mentioned, they are mirroring the above shows of The Smithereens on Saturday and Charie Musselwhite (no Mavis Staples though  sad ) on Sunday. Their sister venue THe Galaxy in Santa Ana also has Dokken Friday, before they come to San Diego...
Good Luck and Have Fun Curby & Co.!
