Topic: Wishbone Ash & Paul Jones

Just been to a couple of gigs. Last week Paul Jones and the Manfreds last weekend and this weekend Wishbone Ash. Both were first time gigs for me.

Paul Jones was a true proffessional, great interaction with the audience at Pacific Road, though in a tiered seat configuration. Great mix of soul, Blues, Jazz, Ballad and oldies from the Manfred Man era. what really surprised me was how good PJ was on the harmonica! Wow, really bluesy. Full set of gob irons in a case, and he really knows his blues roots as any radio show listener will tell. Definately worth a trip to see them. And Jo, if you read this, why not try a collaboration when you next get onto his show with him on harp and you on accoustic / electric, now that would be unmissable!

Wishbone Ash last night, again at Pacific Road in Birkenhead (Where I saw Joe for the second time) Wow, what a tight band. I didn't know any of the songs, so was just left to revel in their obvious skill and presentation. I'm now a fan and bought a DVD from the stall and had it signed by the band members. Bob Skeet really stuck out to me, his bass skills were superb, stringing the whole thing together and the obvious enthusiasm these guys had for their music just lit up the stage, their smiles and the fun they were having playing their two hour set really transmitted to the audience - all standing like at Joe's gig. Chatted to their lead guitarist for a little while, who is quite a fan of Joe's and uses some of the techniques Joe uses. (little finger wrapped around the volume knob). I know they've been around a long while and have masses of fans but  if you ever get the chance to see them live - they are a DON'T MISS band

Glad to see Wishbone Ash getting some love. One of the original twin lead guitar bands. Them and the Allman Brothers both hit the scene at around the same time .
They have gone through many lineup changes over the years but the one who has never left is Andy Powell, who was most likely the guitar player you were talking to. Was he the one playing the Flying V ? If so that was Andy. The other lead guitar player in Ash is Muddy Mannenin, who is also awesome, Muddy has been with the band for a couple of years now, while Andy has been at it for 37 years and counting.
It is a tribute to Joe that a legend like Andy Powell calls himself a fan, Andy has been a world class , highly regarded guitar player for more years than Joe has been alive. I would think that Joe is a fan of his also.
You are correct, Do Not Miss this band when they play in your area, and they will, they are always on tour, all over the world.

Re: Wishbone Ash & Paul Jones

No misinformtion really Geoff, I just guessed that it was Andy. I am sure he knows all about Joe since he has lived in the state Connecticut , here in the USA for many years now.And Joe is from New York of course so they are both from the east coast.
Really cool that you got to talk to Muddy, he is a fantastic player. I look foreward to seeing WA when they come to the Chicago area this year, they always put on a great show.

Re: Wishbone Ash & Paul Jones

Just for the record, incredible band, and yes, Andy is definitely a fan of Joe's as well. Come to think of it though, after hearing, and seeing him, I can't think of a single person who HASN'T become a big fan, both musician and non musician alike. So keep spreading the word!

Here is the link to their official website. If you visit the forum you will see a place where you can ask questions to the band members, I would direct the problem with the DVD to Andy, he does answer questions.
Good luck.
