I guess I should get me some of that.

just a funny to me Bill, no disrespect intended to Jay. He is playing very well. as we are discussing toughness in todays players versus the oldtimers, I refer to all QBs now as Ms, fomented in part by the limited contact rule that the NFL thinks is appropriate. not like the QBs I grew up watching - YA Tittle, Sonny, JohnnyU, Fran, Blanda, BabeP, Bart ......

Saw a story on one of the pre-game shows some years back about Erie, Pa. The story centered on the distance between Erie and Cleveland, Pittsburgh, & Buffalo and how many families were split between the 3 teams during football season and in some instances wouldn't talk to each other during the season, funny stuff, but not to them.

Tres, no offense taken. I grew up watching QB's get the snot kicked out of them and while I think some level of protection is warranted, I totally agree they take it a bit too far. This IS football after all.
I am in the early stages of becoming a Cutler fan...that's the only point I wanted to make.

Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

I remember when Fouts was in the hospital with broken ribs after taking a brutal beating vs the Raiders. Two guys walked into his room and said "we've got something to show you".  One took off his shirt and strapped on a body pad and raised his arms. The other took a ball bat and whacked him several times in the ribs to no effect. That was the prototype of the new gear with ballistic armor sewn into the pads. They are rich now.

I didn't actually hope Jay would be injured seriously, or the other guy Collins or whoever, but NYG pinned their ears back and were relentless. The experts knew what they were doing on that line. Seems obvious the Bears O-Line has some work to do, Cutler can be a lot better if they will keep people off him.

That was the worst protection I've ever seen Tres. That O line was pathetic. Bears defense was incredible but when they had no chance to rest, the result was inevitable.

I was traveling and missed the Bears v Dallas game, but as I understand it started out very similar...Cutler running for his life.
As I heard it, Martz made some adjustments, most notably going to 3 step drops instead of 7 step drops. I kept waiting for that adjustment all game long, but it never came other than for a couple of plays.
It doesn't take long for the entire league to know what your weaknesses are...EVERYBODY knows the Bears weakness right now. I suspect if the Bears don't make some serious adjustments, Cutler won't make it to the halfway point of the season.

After watching the Skins lose numerous games undeservedly at the death last season, it was a great thrill to watch them just sneak a classic game of two halves that they maybe didn't deserve to win. They didn't bury us when they should have done so in the first half, and after they missed a game-winning FG by hitting the post with 1 second left, I felt pretty sure we could steal this from a decimated Packer team. It wasn't pretty, but somehow we've reached 3-2 and the Cowboys are losing.   lol

Make that Cat as in RiverCat has her day wink.  I'll take this a lot because it is a divisional game.  Those mean more to me than out of division games.  But we will take any because our team is still working on it's line-up.  We really just have to concentrate on rebuilding and solidifying positions for players.
I am very happy that McFaddin has recovered from his injuries, he has been a bright spot and hope it works out better than ever for him.  He still needs protection.  Something that is going to be an ongoing need for us.  We just take it 1 game at a time and see how it goes.  What works and what doesn't work.  Hopefully to help us build a good consistant team.  Mad props to Gradkowski and for him to  recover.

Any feelings re the new rules about violent contact?
I say let them play. Every man on the field knows the score and hits to hurt. Now, one of the best DB's in football is deciding if he should quit since they are telling him not to play the way he has for his entire stellar career. After all, it is called Full Contact Football.

No place for stuff like spearing, leg whips, horse collars, etc. Players know what has the potential to seriously hurt someone. But you can't eliminate hitting and you can't put those red practice jerseys on the qb's during a real game...although jay cutler would probably like that idea with the o-line he has!

Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

Agreed on the obvious dirty play but the QB that throws high to his WR and leaves him hanging for the setup shot should share part of the blame. A local fan wrote that the helmet hits would be cut way down if the face guards were eliminated. Not a bad idea. Great for dentists.  yikes That would almost eliminate the helmet grab tackle as well.

That fan got the idea from none other than Joe Paterno.  Take the face guards off and watch notorious tough guys turn into dandy creampuffs.  They would learn to arm tackle in one easy lesson!

I may have said something similar somewhere in this thread...I remember posting somewhere that going back to leather helmets and old equipment might eliminate some of the injuries.

Re: NFL 2010/11 SEAS0N

the NFL of course would never allow helmets without facemasks, because they would have a huge outbreak of disabled claims for eye and other face injuries. You should check out Mark Schlereth's ranting and raging on the subject. I heard the best argument from an ESPN roundtable discussion yesterday, which included Herm Edwards. If you are leading with the head and your arms are not extended to attempt to wrap the guy up, then head to head contact should be flagged. If you are attempting to tackle and have arms at least fairly well extended, then it's going to be a judgement call. Meriweather's hit was the only one that truly fit the description of flagrant head to head. Harrison's hits did not look like they deserved penalties. They are not going to be able to insure fairness on every call, it's an indefensible stance for NFL to say they are not changing the rules but are changing the way they are enforced. A much better idea is for the NFL to hire a company or two to come up with a better helmet. Lombardi has indeed rolled over in his grave.

The Chargers have put together an amazing string of finding ways to lose. It has become so comical that I'm thinking they must have practiced some of the plays several times to get them wrong.  lol  roll
