Topic: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

The thread on the Kossoff LP got me thinking...

What are the ten most valuable guitars in the world?

Here's my guesses in no order:

1. Blackie (Eric C)
2. Jimmy Page's no 1
3. Gilmour's 0001 Strat
4. Neil Young's Old Black Lester avec Bigsby (my fave all time guitar ever!!|)
5. Hendrix white strat
6. Les Paul Log (the prototype)
7. Kossoff LP
8. SRV no 1
9. Nile Rogers Strat (simply because it's been on 310 + billboard hits!)
10. Lucille?

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

Answering my own thread but I think Gilmour's 1959 LP burst with a factory fitted Bigsby is one of only 4 ever produced from that era.

I believe there are a number of "Lucile" guitars. BB named all his guitars "Lucile" even Joe has one!

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

I would say
#1 might be the next 1959 Les paul burst that goes up for auction.
#2 might very well be a Futura Gibson (the unicorn of electrics)... Billy Gibbons claims to own one.

I wonder what happened to the Les Pauls that Les himself played over the years. He used to talk about his favorite '75 deluxe which I never saw. And the one he used to play all the time had a bunch of extra switches on it and such. Those could auction for a ton.

Isn't if funny there's never been a "Les Paul" Les Paul? The one he plays is different.

10 most expensive.....

To be honest it should be most valued, in which case hendrix's sunburst before he started smashing them I believe this is the one he kept (if you look at very early recordings he plays it). Probably used to record with, who here sits down and thinks hes got awesome tone on the early albums?

Well I do made me wanna pick up guitar!!

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

Eric Claptons stolen Les Paul.  Every believed it to be a 59' but recent reports I've read suggest that it was really a 1960 Les Paul Standard.  He thought it was a 59' but doesn't know the serial numbers on it mostly because it was stolen 40 years ago.  People believe its the 60' because the white PAF's, and also he talked about how the neck was slim and every 59' he's tried just didn't feel the same.  The Flame top.  That guitar had a wild flame top and the 59's generally had less flames then the 60.  And Last the controlls had metal tops to them which should be a dead give away.

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

My guess would be BFG's "Pearly" as the top valued guitar followed close by Clapton's "Blackie".

Just my opinion.

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

Not in any particular order:

1) Jimi's Woodstock Stratocaster
2) SRV's #1
3) Billy Gibbon's "Pearly Gates" '59 Les Paul
4) Jimmy Page's #1 '59 LP
5) Clapton's Blackie/Brownie
6) Clapton's Cream 335
7) Clapton's stolen "Bluesbreaker" '59/'60 Les Paul (so much lore with that one, if it was ever found OMG $$$$$$$!!!!)
8) Eric Johnson's "Virginia" '54 Stratocaster
9) David Gilmour's serial #1 '54 Stratocaster
10) Bruce Springsteen's beat to pieces Telecaster (I know you guys are laughing, but I bet it would be worth TONS)
11) Eddie Van Halen's original Frankenstrat

I'm sure there are some I'm missing but these are the first to come to mind.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

As of now, Blackie has gone for the most at auction. SRV's Lenny I think is like 6th. Other than that I don't know.

Your correct. Springsteens Tele is one collectors would die to get a hold of.

And, let's not forget Rorys Strat is another biggie! Not to mention Buddy Holly's 58 Strat!!

.....and the list goes on.......

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

Page's collection. Full stop.

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

I agree with one addition - Duane Allman's '59 seems to fit in here somewhere

Guitars: '79 LP Custom, '01 Dickey Betts Goldie - 80 of 114, '00 Chandler Lectraslide
Amps: '00 Marshall 1987x, '70 Marshall 1959 SL, 4x12 JBL D120s
'64 Vibroverb - JBL D130, '66 Super Reverb - CTS Alnicos
'77 Peavey Deuce (great for melting stubborn ear wax)

Eddie's black and yellow Frankenstrat (the one on the back of the Van Hallen II album cover) is buried with Dimebag Darrell...  Pretty cool of him to do.  That one I'm sure would be worth a ton, too.

Maybe these wouldn't be right at the top, but a couple others that come to my mind are John McLaughlin's double neck, Tom Morello's "Arm the Homeless" guitar, Wes Montgomery's Gibson hollowbody (what was that, like an ES-175? L5 maybe?), Randy Rhoads' polka-dot V, Kurt Cobain's Fender JagStang, Waylon Jennings' telecaster, oh and I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jimi's Monterey strat (speaking of smashed guitars---a sliver of that thing might be worth a good chunk of dough! Even if it has burn marks!), and also Brian May's Red Special (another I'm surprised wasn't mentioned).  And who knows, maybe Billy Jo Armstrongs' LP Special or John Mayer's Black One could be worth quite a good amount too.  Maybe in due time...  And I wouldn't be surprised to see people pay a pretty penny for Dave Matthews' Taylor 914-ce.

While we're at it, why don't you just give me Louis Armstrong's trumpet and a piano played by Stevie Wonder!  wink

Re: What are the most valuable single guitars in the world?

Yeah but alot of the guitars that are on peoples list have already sold to people.
Duane Allman's 59' Les Paul sold in 2000 for $250,000
Jimi's woodstock White Stratocaster sold back in the 90's for the Hendrix family for like $170,000
Buddy Holly and his 58' Sunburst Stratocaster sold year and year and years ago for something like $1,000 in the 60's

And all the guitars that have sold resently such as Blackie will only go up in value as well as these, but I doubt these guitars ever go back on the market for Auction.  The people that own these instruments make way more from showing these guitars off then they have to gain from resales.  Think about the images taken today of the instruments are copy righted and if you don't pay to have use of the images of these instruments in a book or something you'll have a lawsuit on your hands.

Hands down Jimmy Page Les Paul #1 will never see a for sell sign on it unless he passes away and the family sells it, but if you look at the replicas Gibson has made Jimmy's first 25 that were hand signed retailed for $25,000... They sold in reality for $50,000 a piece.  Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates didn't do that.  So in makes scense that if those guitars went on sell Jimmy Page's Les Paul would be the most expensive.  But Both of these guys say that Eric Clapton with the Bluesbreakers LES PAUL and marshall inspired them to buy one in the first place.  Which is why I say EC's Les Paul which I think is in someone's closet for fear of ever getting caught out with that instrument would be the most expensive guitar of all time.

Swap out the white pickups and change some things...with true 59 era stuff - I doubt Clapton would even recognize it. It would be cool if it finally came out... and who knows, maybe it is out there somewhere.

I really hope it's not like what kids do when they steal bikes... just ghost-ride them into the river.  sad
