Re: Folkestone Kent Review

Can't believe that this time last year I hadn't even heard of Joe!!!!!!!!!...................my loss but I'm catching up quick!

What a terrific performance last night in Folkestone & great to see such a range of age groups. Yeah, my interest was as a result of the creation of BCC, being a big Glenn fan, but JB is a legend (albeit at a very young age) in his own right & I just feel grateful to have had the opportunity to not only listen to his digital work but also now being able to see him on stage.....fantastic!

I think the packed ranks last night will take you up on your promise to come back to Folkestone (where??) again some day, Joe  big_smile

Re: Folkestone Kent Review

for the regs

another awesome show- someone said that WUD is getting tired the other day- well i reckon joe's read it cos he totally rejuvenated it.

lousy lousy sound for the first half of set until sloe gin- mix was shocking - bogie much too high and the lead guit almost inaudible. by saying that they got it right during sloe gin

joe looked so healthy, that was really noticable.

great set.

"Who wants an orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips...."

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.

Re: Folkestone Kent Review

Setlist exactly the same as before *per Roger62's photo of the signed setlist*:

Cradle Rock
So Many Roads
When The Fire Hits The Sea
So It’s Like That
If Heartaches Where Nickels
Slow Train
Steal Your Heart Away
Sloe Gin
Ballad Of John Henry
Happier Times
Never Make Your Move Too Soon
Great Flood
Young Mans Blues
Woke Up Dreaming
Mountain Time
******ENCORE******
Bird On A Wire
Just Got Paid

Nice "ghost of John Henry crying out from the passed" sound from the theremin...Slide on The Ballad of John Henry  cool ...a mellower start and no baritone...Echo the F bomb concurrence Joe with that being somebody's idea of #12 top riff of the last decade  mad! BAH! Whoday anyway?!  No apologies, Anton or Jason got nuthin' (but bon bon fancy  neutral ) on Bogie  wink ! This band cooks!

Re: Folkestone Kent Review

Well what can I say...'what a day we had' at Folkestone.
I left my home around 10.30am to miss all the weekend shoppers clogging up everyone lives on the M25 going to Lakeside. It was an overcast but not cold day, but on approaching the Dartford Bridge Crossing, 'Sloe Gin' (studio version) started playing on my in car DAb radio, all of a sudden the clouds broke and the sun shone on the bridge, due to the congestion on it, i finally got through the toll just as the song was ending, upon so the sun abruptly sunk in behind the clouds again, etherial moment indeed and what a great omen for the upcoming festivities.
I parked up the car , picked up the ticket from the box office and proceeded to find the band all coming out of the nearby hotel making their ways to the tour bus.
I managed to get my Black Rock cd signed by all and BCC by Joe, plus a few other items. Great chats with all the band who were all quite bemused by the venue.
The forumites then started slowly gathering, CurrymanDavid was the first , then we were met by Maggie & Lydia on the vantage veranda in front of the venue. We then spotted Joe coming out of soundcheck and the bonabuddies had their cd's and other stuff signed with some photos with Joe and a few words.
We were getting hungry so being at the seashore it had to be fish& chips on the veranda and it was really cool eating out of a bag in the fresh air by the sea. After this we spotted Michael and Pete and we all sat in the cafe above the venue where Joe and Bogie joined us for a chat and bewilderment at Michaels swag of cd's .
Then we all queued up at the front and we were then joined by other bonabuddies inc wooders, doors open mad rush to the front where we stood our ground waiting for the show to start.
And what a show, the band were are sparkling form songs old and new in the upgraded set this time and it did sound refreshing, Michael was passed a plectrum from Joe at the end I claimed a setlist from Dave the guitar tech.
Pete took some wonderful footage which I'm sure is now on youtube, my photos are now available and i'm sure some others will be shortly.
We stood outside after the gig and all band members came out and had a really good time chatting, signing, being photographed.
The bonabuddies then made our way to the nearby hotel to reflect on the gig and other upcoming gigs we are attending, more photos and a couple of drinks, before we all went our seperate ways to a well earned sleep. Mine was actually a 100 mile journey bask home before todays gig at Cambridge with Pete. I would finally make a special mention for Carmine who I thought played the best bass I've seen/heard in ages, he was phenomenal !!!!!

Easy.

It was Joe's little jokette.  lol  Joe has definitely heard of Folkestone as I heard him mention it on Planet Rock when he, Glenn and Jason were interviewed the night before the secret gig.  hmm

Re: Folkestone Kent Review

Thanks everyone for your wonderful reviews.  Good to see Joe and the band on top form, as always.  How does he find time to rehearse with this band as well as BCC PLUS go off to Santorini to make another CD .....

Unfortunately I can't access the YouTube clips but heck I get to see the real thing in 3 sleeps time!

Re: Folkestone Kent Review

What a fantastic weekend. Weather was perfect, hotel was superb, company was delightful and Joe’s show at the Leas Cliff, Folkestone was pretty darn hot too. big_smile

The venue is built into the cliff with just a little pyramid at street level, hence Joe’s comment about it looking like a coffee shop. It holds around 1,500 in the bowels of the theatre and is so deep that you go downstairs to the upstairs seating.

Having missed seeing Joe, Carmine, Bogie and Rick in the café earlier in the afternoon, I caught up with Maggie, Lydia, David, Roger, Michael, Pete, Mark, PaulG and Sharon in the queue at around 6.00pm – thanks for saving my space chaps. With nothing between us and the wind of the English Channel as it sandpapered our faces we had some lively banter while we waited in line with. It was a wee bit chilly, especially as I had just my Crumbling LP short sleeved t-shirt on. Brrrr. Pete made an impression on the ladies as one was heard to say “Ooh Pete, you are big” and another thought he was very familiar. lol We all filed in just after 7.00pm and, fortunately, security didn’t seem to be too bothered about cameras, or in one Bonabud’s case, recording apparatus. I left Mrs W in the seats upstairs where she quickly got chatting to some other lady fans while I made my way down to the front where most of the aforementioned were strung out across the barrier in front of the stage – where else would they be roll

Around 8.00pm 2 Minutes to Midnight rang out and we knew Joe was on his way. Standing at the foot of the steps for a couple of minutes, Joe was champing at the bit and so were we. Up the steps he came and went straight into a stunning Cradle Rock before he’d reached the microphone – check out Pete’s video. As mentioned elsewhere, the setlist was the same as the Madrid show so no major surprises. The excellent lighting is more or less the same as at the May gigs in the UK, but that’s where the similarity ends as nearly all the numbers played had something different about them, whether it was a different solo or slightly altered arrangement. The highlights were too numerous too mention but undoubtedly include the new song Slow Train and Never Make Your Move, which I hadn’t seen Joe play live before. I hate to say it but before the show I had wondered whether seeing Joe again this year would be too much like the previous times, but I needn’t have worried – you definitely can’t have too much of a good thing as far as Joe’s concerned. big_smile If you haven’t yet seen Joe on this tour, you’re definitely in for a treat.

While Pete stood next to me taking videos, I snapped away at the still shots. As I took around 350, they may take a while for me to sift through and upload to flickr. There are some good ones in there so watch out for them.

The performance ended around 10.00pm and we hung around outside waiting for Joe and the guys to appear. As there’s really only one way out, there was no escaping us! Rick and Carmine were first to appear after 30 minutes or so, then Bogie a few minutes later before Joe emerged around an hour after the show. Joe looked relaxed but tired as he posed for pics and signed anything proffered before he made his way to the tour bus and the journey to Cambridge that night.

Those who were staying in Folkestone overnight plus Roger made their way to the Southcliff Hotel where Maggie and Lydia were staying for a night cap or two and to talk over the night’s events which, as always, disappeared far too quickly.

A fantastic weekend. smile
